I lived in Baltimore for 13 years, and I was there when the NFL voted in the new team.

TOday being Edgar Allan Poe's Birthday, I think of the bird RAVEN

I know I will hear from Jacksorbetter on this, but I know what I am talking about.

The committee on names could have named the team any of the following:

Bombers

Cobras

and had the chance to buy the CFL name STALLIONS from the Baltimore franchise

AND NOW FOREVER MORE THEY ARE THE "RAVENS"

Talk around the NFL is that this color combo and name is going to hurt them in the long run. The last ranking of merchandise sales for them was in the bottom 8 in the league.

And yes I do beliwve one of the other names would have been a better NFL image, and better popularity and sales

I preferred Bombers..I wasn't wild about any of the names....or the color scheme...I hated the name Ravens when it was announced..its not as bad as I once thought...

I'm still furious we lost the name COLTS and the awesome uniform! Love that uniform!

THE COLTS ARE BALTIMORE

I agree with Bombers as well. I actually remember the mock logo, and It was pretty cool

I was thinking the same thing #1...especially NOW since 9/11 and world events since then...You know Baltimore was the place where they actually made Bullets for the early WWI and WWII?

I'll be honest in that I don't even remember the other options. It was before I'd seen the light as I was still a Redskin fan at the time. I do like the name and the colors that the Ravens have. As to why they are low in merchandise sales, I'd guess it is a combination of the team still being somewhat new and the lack of a marketable guy on offense. Many people outside of Baltimore dislike the Ravens due to Billick, Ray Lewis in Buckhead, Jamal and his drug charges, etc. The top 5 selling teams have all been around at least 35 years. I think the new Eagles jerseys are ugly, especially the #81 jersey but it is the top selling jersey. If the Ravens had chosen the Bombers, they would have had to change it already. Also, my son loves the mascots: Edgar, Allan and Poe.

Letting Stokely get away was a mistake.

Ravens had no choice in letting Stokely go...When the SB team was at its peak, they just could NOT afford to keep everyone...strictly cap reasons...

The team was prematurely dismantled by the cap and the expansion Texans stealing two of our top players...Jermaine Lewis and Jamie Sharper...

They simply could not afford to pay that team and keep everyone...
