I've been a recreational gambler for years with a local but have had an acct at Olympic for the last few years. Can someone explain why Olympic or any Offshore would change the percentage of the vig instead of just adjusting the line (in this case the SB)? My old local's juice always 10% and only the line would fluctuate.
For a week or so it's been:
CAR -115
NE -7 -105

Why not just adjust to:
CAR -110
NE -6.5 -110

Always woundered, never asked.

3 reasons:
1) the half point is worth more than 5 cents vig
2) If the jump between 6.5 and 7 (and 7.5) they may get sided or middled.
3) Because they feel like it.

Will Walk - Its an internet thing, and a long story. Short answer is books do not want to get middled or sided. To avoid those calamites, they move juice to influence betting instead of the number. (very short answer).

they dont want to move off of 7 and get sided not to sure what oly opened it but if they opened 6.5 going on and off of 7 could be a disaster hope that helps

mvb- I've always felt it was a smart move by any bookmaker to sit on a key number like 3 or 7 rather and just adjust the juice rather than keep bouncing around. In any game that can be bad news for a book if a game falls on a key number but in a game like the Super Bowl with a huge betting volume, it can be devastating if they have lots of plays at 6 1/2 and 7.

Excuse my ignorance, but while I'm dealing with gambling vets it's a chance to ask a few questions and learn a little bit.

I know the basic terms -- middle, side, total, but what does it mean if an offshore "gets sided". I've always understood that basically the line moves in response to the action on either side, adjusting to keep and equal amount, 50/50 on each side. Hypothetically wouldn't they have to move the line to 6.5 (or 7.5 for that matter) if the gambling pubic started leaning more towards one team or the other? And why wouldn't this hurt a local book who just adjusts lines, not the juice (money volume?)

getting 'sided' is when one side of the bet hits and the other pushes. ie if you wrote action at 7 and 6.5 then the game landed 7 you would have been sided on the fave at -6.5

Mjred is correct. To take it a little further if a book, offshore or not, uses a single number the entire time he deals a game, he cannot get sided or middled.Eg. -6.5 in the SB or even -7. If he has no bets other than at the single number he dealt, regardless of the juice, then unless it falls 7 (in this case) he has winners and losers, not winners and pushes (a side) or worse all winners (a middle).
