If you have two homes, I don't assume the best thing to do is have to separate Direct TV accounts.

What is the best way to have Direct TV in both homes on one account?

Any of you do this? I don't like the streaming option as it's unreliable IMO.

maybe the best thing to do is just call them and ask, or put the other one in your wife name

My neighbor has 2 homes and 4 total receivers. Two at each house under 1 account. He just had them install a dish at the second location and set it up. Sounds pretty easy. Call them and they will walk you through it.

I have a few loaned out to friends that put up their own dish. Fred's room, Bill's room, etc. -- all of them are "rooms" in my house.

It's only $5 per adtl. receiver.

I think if you do this though when you turn the channel in one house, it changes the channel in the other house.

I have 2 homes with 1 account. They call it the second home package. It's free except for the cost of the equipment. It's only supposed to work at one location at a time. So you call and have them turn off house 1 and turn on house 2. Then call back to have it switched. I got this package 3 months ago and it works at both houses. I'm not complaining! It costs $110/month w HBO.My "second home" is a cabin I built about 2 hours from my primary home.

Certainly not the case. Others further explained how it works.

Easy to set up.

I need a box that gets me Chicago channels. They have me in the south bend market, 10 miles from me is where the Chicago market starts.

It's not as easy as it sounds at all. I want two houses with different people in each house. I'm not going to call and cancel service at each house. That's not the purpose.

I think you just order direct tv at the house they install the dish and then you just return the box and order the one you want

Reading through all of these posts, I want an easy explanation how I can set up 2 houses w/ only 1 account (not the "second home" package that I currently have)....so what would I do?

-I have Direct TV at home w/ 2 boxes (living room and master bedroom).
-I have Direct TV w/ 2 boxes at the second home (living room and loft).
-I pay 1 bill, but technically I'm supposed to call to have 1 turned off while I'm at the 2nd home (then have to call and have it turned back on at the 1st home)...but for some reason (Direct TV's mistake??) it works at both homes....but this could get "fixed" if Direct TV catches it.
-How would I set it up to have it work at both houses w/ just the 1 account??

tell them you want 4 boxes at house 1

cancel turn in boxes from house 2 you still have dish up

take 2 active boxes from house 1 and put in house 2

don't think you can plug phone line or internet to boxes in house 2 and if you have problem with box need to take both boxes to house 1 as they check for all boxes in house on service call

think that's how it's done

remember house 2 doesn't have a account and you can't call for service there

Thanks for the info. If they ever catch on, I'll look into that. Right now it's working out great w/ the 'second home' package.

Good question Enfuego. I'd like to add directtv to a cabin that right now relies on crappy local cable (maybe 40 channels). But I definitely don't want to have to turn my directv OFF anytime we go up there as often times it is used while I'm still at home.

If I'm reading the responses correctly, it sounds like the process is:

1. Call Directtv and set up the "second home" package that posters discussed above (that would require turning on and off).
2. Get the dish and boxes installed at your second home.
3. Then call directv and ask for an extra box (or more) at your primary home.
4. Cancel service at the second home and return the second hime boxes.
5. Take your new extra primary home boxes to the second home.

Is that it in a nutshell?

If adding a second home account, do you have to sign a lengthy contract for the second home? If so, that would throw a wrench in the above plan. Or maybe it's just considered an addition to your primary home account and does not require a contract.

Its worth considering. But it also seems like a lot could go wrong in the process and you could be stuck with non-working satelite at the second home with no real way to seek service.

Im leaning more towards just keeping the crappy local cable. I can turn it off and return the boxes and have no bill from October to March anyway when it's not in use. Only advantage Directv would have is access to way more channels.

Call Obama..... he can probably give you some sort of subsidy...... so you don't have to STEAL your TV for the second location.

That is what we are talking about here, right?

Like back when...... people used to talk about stealing the signal for TV by hooking up to their neighbor's wiring. Good luck not getting caught?

Yeah, I have two houses and two different groups of people living in those houses. Can't be turning stuff off and on etc.

Sounds like there is no way of doing this.
