Yesterday there was a prop on which team gets the first "First down". I did not play it but I was wondering does a touchdown count as a first down? I went on Yahoo after the Portis TD and it credited Washington with a first down even though they started first and goal.

well guru...i have not really given it much thought

lets break it down...there are 10 yards to a first down and 100 yards on the field...SO if its 1st and GOAL...the GOAL would be a touchdown and a first down as it is part of the 10 1st downs in the 100 yard field...so I guess it is correct

in the case you mention - NO

because there was less than 10 yards to go - washington couldn't gain 10 yards and the 1st down - so when they ran it in from 5 yards out - that was NOT a 1st down. the only way the skins could get a 1st down in this case is if the eagles committed a penalty.

let's say the skins got the ball at the 11 and on 2nd down portis ran it in. THEN washington would get a 1st down because they picked up a first down on the play and a TD.
