Guys as I've said all along, this program is currently in a free fall. They had all year as a sample size of the offense with Swoopes at QB and a shoddy defense and still came out and put up an egg at Notre Dame. And now you are demoting your OC, that you as the HC brought in to be the OC. Again, you had all year to evaluate your staff and you make this change after week 1!! And you wonder why Everett Golson didn't want to go to Texas where he would have been given the job without competing, or why Max Whitek didn't end up going there?

AUSTIN, Texas -- Charlie Strong is shaking up his coaching staff after Texas' 38-3 loss to Notre Dame.
Strong demoted co-offensive coordinators Shawn Watson and Joe Wickline on Tuesday and named receivers coach Jay Norvell his new playcaller.

After a lopsided 38-3 loss to Notre Dame, Longhorns coach Charlie Strong demoted co-offensive coordinators Shawn Watson and Joe Wickline and named receivers coach Jay Norvell his new playcaller. Ronald Martinez/Getty Images"We have to get this program on track," Strong said. "We have to do a better job of coaching. There's no reason for us to go out and perform at the level we've been performing. There's no reason at all."
Norvell is in his first season at Texas after a seven-year stint as an assistant at Oklahoma, including four seasons as the Sooners' co-offensive coordinator.
Watson and Wickline will remain on staff, with Watson continuing to coach Texas' quarterbacks and Wickline continuing to coach the offensive line. Watson had been the team's primary playcaller and came with Strong from Louisville, where he'd been calling plays since 2011.

"It was a tough decision because Shawn and Joe and I have been friends for a long time," Strong said. "You have to do what's best for the program."
In the 35-point loss to the Irish, Texas' offense produced 163 total yards and eight three-and-outs. The Longhorns have lost three straight dating back to last season and rank last in the nation in total offense and No. 120 in scoring offense.
"We have to get better, and we need to continue to move forward," Strong said. "It's all about productivity, it's about building a program and building it the right way."
Strong said he has not decided whether Tyrone Swoopes or Jerrod Heard will start at quarterback against Rice in the Longhorns' home opener Saturday night.

Me too. They "settled" on a replacement for Mack. After bragging about their financial success they have not been able to have success on the field.

What a disgrace that 1st game was......Is Charlie Strong on a 6 year program?.....Brutal hire!

Swoopes is one of the worst starting QB`s in the nation....163 total yards....8 three and outs.....Enough said!

There is some speculation, in Austin, that if Strong doesn't get to a bowl this year, he's out.

Should have made Briles an offer he couldn't refuse.

I was one who thought the Strong hire was a good one......but it does look like a train wreck. Not sure they'll give him the time to fix it....or if he's capable of fixing it. At least he'll be a very rich man once he's canned.

I agree with the sentiments posted in here by all of the above. Texas looked for a cure-all that could take care of two problems when they realized that no decent HC wanted to follow Brown. First, they took a HC who would not be popular with the alum and had a major attitude problem. Strong and his "my way or the highway" attitude will cost him this job, and many more. Second, they got rid of the racial problem caused by the idiotic "Politically Correct" liberals out there.

By hiring this wanna-be HC, Texas will be able to fire him after the end of next season, if not before. Like many other minorities, he blames everyone but himself for the major problems at UT. Everyone is wrong but him. I really hope that Texas loses 7 or more games this season, and that is a very realistic possibility. I know everyone wants to see him gone except the fans of the other 9 schools in the Big 12-2.

Coach, I'm not sure he'll get a chance to fix it. I know from a very good source that there are a couple of boosters behind the scene working to get support to remove both him and Patterson after this season. Not sure they can pull off that double play but if Patterson goes the new guy would be tasked to bring in a HC.
Here's the problem he's facing...I've had several UT Alums in their conversations talk about A&M and make the comment, why is it that Sumlin can go in and get a kid or get a coach to give them access or info on a kid and Strong can't? So if you've spoken to them both, you realize in a second that talking to Sumlin is like talking to your neighbor or some cool guy at the bar. I would rate Strong as a pretty stiff "white guy". Kids are not buying what he's trying to sell. It's not my way or the highway, he's just not that good of a communicator. Or why is it that Sumlin can get a true freshman prepped to play in a game from day one, but Strong can't? One of my best buddies who played at UT even says of Strong, he's just out of touch and can't relate to young black kids today. I wont say what my buddy called him, but it was not flattering at all. Ironically, his kid is probably going to end up at either UCLA, USC, Ohio St, or A&M if his wife wants to keep the kid instate.

sure seems a lot like last year....

Texas gets throttled on TV by 34 at BYU and folks are emptying their bank accounts to play against them the following week. Not only did they cover the 7.5 but were up by 4 in the 4th quarter. Now they get beat by 35 by a really good ND team and folks are calling for a total disaster...again?

don't underestimate talented kids (yes, texas still has talent...4-year recruiting avg is #10 in nation vs Rice's #90) that just got embarrassed on national tv.

Hasn't Jay Norvell bounced around at several colleges. I remember a few years ago he was under Callahan at NEB then he went to UCLA.

I've never really understood why Stoops used newcomer Huepel to call the plays at OU instead of co-OC Norvell, who was much more experienced at the job. If he had given him that job he might have still been at OU. But who knows...

This is the first thing that came to my mind since Texas has always LOVED to beat up on Rice. it's just that this year now that the Charlie Strong honeymoon is over, I'm not sure what's really going on down there on the 40 acres. At this point some of the players may be just as happy for him to get out of town as the boosters.

The honeymoon has LOOOOONNNNNGGGG been over.

He tried to pull what Urban Meyer did when he got to UF (and Ohio State)....and it backfired on him.

He never called plays at Nebraska either. That's a long career without ever calling plays.

There's got to be something going on there that his head coaches didn't like. But i was never able to find out what it was at OU. The question is why is Strong demoting both Watson and Wickline out of calling plays based on one game. That is a very WEIRD move imo.

I am by no means saying load up against UT. All I'm saying is there is something going on and it does not look good (from the outside). I'd just be leary of them until I see a better sample size of the product this year. I see that they started at -16 and is now down to -14 versus Rice. Interestingly, the previous lowest spread was back in '98 when Texas was -7. The spreads have been as follows 24, 31, 29, 38, 35, 40, 20, 27, and 7. So not only were they double digits, but more than half were 30 point spreads or ABOVE.

Texas wins over Rice 42-28.
Rice controlled the clock 43min to 17min
Rice outrushed Texas 228 to 139
Rice outpassed Texas 234 to 128 (Texas only threw 10 passes)
Texas recovered a Fumble and returned it 69 yds for a TD
Texas returned a punt 85 yd for a TD
Texas recovered a fumble inside Rice 10 and scored TD two plays later.
Texas got 21 points from defense and special teams
This is one of those deceptive box scores. Rice could easily have won this game
