President Donald Trump has met with four contenders for the Supreme Court nomination, including one woman and one Indian-American judge, and may be adding a second woman to his consideration list.

He met Monday with four federal appeals court judges: Brett Kavanaugh, Amy Coney Barrett, Amul Thapar and Raymond Kethledge, according to multiple media reports.

And there may be a fifth name on that list: Trump is expected to meet with Justice Joan Larsen of the 6th Circuit as early as Tuesday, ABC News reported.

The president also spoke on the phone Monday to Republican Sen. Mike Lee of Utah about the position.

'Yesterday, the President spoke on the phone with Sen. Mike Lee,' White House spokesman Raj Shah said in a statement on Tuesday.

The White House declined to say who all of the potential justices that Trump was meeting with this week were, including the two or three he said he'd be meeting with on Tuesday.

Lee and the other possibilities were all on the list of 25 names Trump was working off of to pick his next Supreme Court Justice.

The contenders all have strong conservative judicial records as Trump seeks to the move the Supreme Court to the right with his pick to replace retiring Supreme Court Justice Anthony Kennedy

Coney Barrett is a favorite of religious conservatives. She is said to be a deeply religious Catholic and once argued that Catholic judges should sometimes recuse themselves from sentencing in death penalty cases because the church opposes it in all circumstances.

She is from New Orleans, born in 1972, graduated from Rhodes College and Notre Dame Law School. She has seven children.

The 46-year-old clerked for Justice Antonin Scalia in 1998 and served as a law professor at her alma mater, George Washington University and the University of Virginia.

She serves on the 7th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals in Indiana after being nominated by Trump last year, which means she was confirmed by the same Senate that will be voting on the Supreme Court pick.

Her faith become a flashpoint during her confirmation hearing, however. During her hearing, the Senate Judiciary Committee's ranking Democrat, Dianne Feinstein of California, told Barrett that 'the dogma lives loudly within you, and that's of concern.'

Senate Minority Leader Charles Schumer, a Democrat from New York, has already attacked Barrett. On Twitter, Schumer argued she would support overturning Roe v. Wade.

'The bottom line: Judge Barrett has given every indication that she will be an activist judge on the Court,' Schumer wrote.

'If chosen as the nominee, she will be the deciding vote to overturn Roe v. Wade and to strike down pre-existing conditions protections in the ACA.'

Amul Thapar, the son of Indian-American immigrants, was Trump's first nominee to an appeals court in 2017.
He's a former district court judge from Kentucky with a conservative track record and was among those Trump considered as a replacement for Scalia, who died in 2016.

His most well-known criminal case as a district-court judge was the October 2013 case of the United States vs. Walli, which involved three Christian pacifists and resulted in Thapar jailing an 84-year-old nun along with two others.

Sister Megan Rice and two others were charged with breaking into a federal nuclear plant in Oak Ridge, Tenn., and hanging banners, splattering blood and writing antiwar messages on the wall . After the defendants were convicted of sabotage and damaging federal property, Thapar sentenced two of them to five years in prison and Rice to a 35-month prison term.

Thapar is said to be the favorite of Senate Republican Leader Mitch McConnell, who is also from Kentucky.

He was the U.S. Attorney for the Eastern District of Kentucky from 2006 to 2008 and was nominated to the 6th Circuit by George W. Bush in 2008.

The 49-year-old is an alumnus of Boston College and the University of California, Berkeley, law school.

Brett Kavanaugh, an appointee of President George W. Bush, clerked at the Supreme Court for Kennedy.

He was also a prosecutor under independent counsel Kenneth Starr, who investigated President Bill Clinton.

The Yale-educated appellate court judge for the District of Columbia recently wrote a dissent when his colleagues allowed an immigrant teen in U.S. custody to have an abortion.

The 53-year-old was the the White House staff secretary under President George W. Bush from 2003 until 2006.

He is said to be a favorite of many Republican leaders.

Raymond Kethledge also clerked for Kennedy, and has the support of some conservative activists. A graduate of the University of Michigan Law School, he does not have the Harvard or Yale pedigree that Trump has told associates he would like to see in the next justice.

The 51-year-old was counsel to Republican Sen. Spencer Abraham of Michigan until 1997 and clerked for Kennedy the following year.

He was nominated to the 6th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals by George W. Bush in 2006.

Joan Larsen, a 49-year-old from Michigan, serves on the 6th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals Before that, she was an Associate Justice of the Supreme Court of Michigan from 2015 until last year. She was nominated to the 6th Circuit by Trump in November 2017.

Thomas Hardiman of the Third Circuit is also said to be on the president's short list.

Hardiman, 52, went to the University of Notre Dame as the first person in his family to go to college. He financed his law degree at the Georgetown University Law Center by driving a taxi.

He became a federal district judge at 37 and was appointed to the 3rd Circuit in 2007. Hardiman has sided with jails seeking to strip-search inmates arrested for even minor offenses and has supported gun rights.

He dissented in a 2013 case that upheld a New Jersey law to strengthen requirements for carrying a handgun in public.

A Massachusetts native, Hardiman settled in Pittsburgh, where his wife comes from a family of prominent Democrats.

Trump's meetings with four of his contenders on Monday lasted roughly 45 minutes each, White House press secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders said at her press briefing Monday afternoon.
'He's looking for individuals that have the right intellect, the right temperament, and that will uphold the constitution,' Sanders said when asked what qualities the president sought.

The president said on Monday he'd be meeting with a few other judges.

'I'll be meeting two or three more and we'll make a decision on the United States Supreme Court, the new justice,' he said.

Trump noted that all the judges he met with 'are outstanding people. They are really incredible people in so many different ways - academically, and every other way. And I had a very, very interesting morning.'

He added: 'I think the person that is chosen will be outstanding.'

Trump is expected to announce his pick on July 9, the day before he leaves on a trip to Brussels, London, Scotland and Helsinki.

The fast-pace of the nomination is designed to put a new justice on the bench by October - the start of the next term.
White House Counselor Kellyanne Conway on Tuesday dismissed critics who say that Trump is moving too fast, noting that he was working of a pre-established list of 25 potential high court judges.
'We're very happy with the way the process will unfold,' she said. 'I'd say that this is going at a Trump pace, not a swamp speed, in terms of he has promised that he will announce his selection next Monday, and then go and then go and make another historic foreign trip.'
White House counsel Donald McGahn is overseeing the confirmation process inside the White House.

Deputy White House press secretary Raj Shah will take temporary leave from his role to oversee full time communications, strategy and messaging coordination with Capitol Hill allies on the nominee.
Republicans, who hold a scant 51 majority in the Senate, are bracing for an election-year battle over whomever Trump chooses.

Democrats, looking to energize their base ahead of the midterms, have begun taking aim at members of the shortlist and see the Supreme Court opening as a chance to rally their voters.
