In Texas Holdem NL....

2 people are in before the FLOP....

PLAYER A: has 2/2

PLAYER B: has A/K (not suited)

who has the stonger hand going into the first Flop of 3 cards?

ALSO***

If the 2's are stronger, would you rather be PLAYER A or PLAYER B.....

In other words, if challenged into an ALL IN which player would you rather be?

The pair of 2's has a small advantage over A-K

To answer your second question ........the 2's have an advantage, BUT if you were playing in say a 10-handed game and EVERYBODY folded preflop, one can PROBABLY assume that the deck is ACE RICH and thus making this hand more of a toss-up than the math portrays.

AK vs. 22, and AK vs. JJ hands

Many think these hands are "coinflips" in all-in situations. Actually the higher pairs hold up better since they aren't counterfeited by boards like 88994. Also they make more straights. I think that makes higher pairs more like 55% plays, lower pairs around 53%.

The problem with going allin with that small pair is that you never know when Mr. 10-10 is going to call you. So you either

1) Get a 53% play vs. two overcards or
2) You are looking at being a 4-1 dog.

Remember too, with A-K suited, we are working with a small advantage on paper over the pair of 2's in a heads-up confrontation.

A-K ... 47%
2's ... 53%

AKs ... 50.1%
2's..... 49.9%

AK has several names including; 'big slick' and 'walking back to Houston.' The latter dates back to Texas road players 'walk' back home after going broke with the hand. Another favorite for AK making the rounds in recent years is 'Anna Kournakova' (as in, 'looks great, never wins.

I'll always take the pair if its a cointoss....but obviously because the best u can hope for with dueces is a cointoss, AK is much more powerful since there is only a couple of hands you are in big trouble against (kings or aces),

the problem is that a lot of people overplay AK and cant get away from the hand when they flop an ace or a king......or they just call bets on the flop and pray to catch ace or king on turn.

You make a VERY excellent point about how A-K can lead the rank amatuer down the wrong path.

The hand AK busts more players than any other hand. Too many people don't know how to play it properly.
