oh, there's a reason they do it.
it benefits THEM.
IMO it offsets some unwanted action, and/or invites/baits the 'incorrect' side.
they dont do it on every game.
I dont look at it as buying points, I look at the other side, the SELL option.
now this whole concept can get very complicated especially when throwing in the value of a point or half point in the NBA, but is a point or half point worth the same in every game? In my opinion, no.
Pinnacle's strategy may also be to try to keep from being middled, and middled at the half from a full game.
I'm not very good at explaining these types of things, but it makes sense to me. I guess the bottom line is that a book's goal is to induce action, and the more action on a bad number the better. Worst case scenario is to reduce action on a side they dont want action on. It would seem like anything other than this would be bad for profitability, or maybe I'm missing too much.
One other thing I've noticed-- I havent been watching as closely as I could, but it seems like Pinnacle 'switches off' the "autopilot" at some point. In other words the number and vig move to relative market standard price quickly around 10am CST (not at all sure about the exact time and there are different situations), and I think sometimes it is done at once which leads me to believe that it is not entirely driven by action. Maybe they are trying to avoid some of the big moves which occur during this time.
I'm just assuming most of this, I'm curious enough to try to find out for certain.
