Its hard to say this guy is a great coach after everything ive seen the past few seasons. His lack of in game adjustments and substitutions is just mind boggling and embarrassing. Some will continue to say this is him being the zen master but I just dont think he knows any better.

Example: Tonight! He continues to play Fisher while he cant hit any type of shot instead of giving more time to Farmar or Brown. Even worse, he plays Walton (one of the three stooges) while Powell receives a DNP.

Any thoughts?

just look at the lakers squad and you're telling me that phil jackson isnt a great coach? he have the rings to prove it..and look at last years results..NBA Finals..with a squad like the lakers, you need Phil Jackson to get you far..Kobe is basically half the team, the other half is Phil Jackson!

uhhh last time I checked he has an all star in Gasol running next to him and dont forget about Odom. Last time I checked Jordan also has a few rings, did he have something to do with Jackson getting them? I think so! I think any above average coach would have 9 rings if they had the players Jackson did IMO

I think Jackson might just be burned out and coaching for the paycheck.

Yes, you guys are right he is a terrible coach and those 9 world championship rings are just one fluke after another, after another. I mean the proof is that last year he had his team in the world Campionship series again, fluke. This guy sucks at coaching, hes been accidently at the right place at the right time. If I would have taken the 134 bus that stops right in front of the Staple Center, I would have been at the right place at the right time and I would have 9 Championship rings. @):)

overrated by far... his championships have been accompanied by the VERY best players ie Jordan in his dominance, Kobe & Shaq TOGETHER... he is a good coach, not the best.

Since the general concensus is ,Jackson is a good coach (not a great coach), could someone enlighten me as to who they think might be a great coach (and how many championship rings do they have)?

Doc Rivers (and I'm not really a Celtic fan) is every bit the coach Jackson is.

I agree that Phil is not the best in-game coach and I agree that he has had good players that helped him win championships.

But there have been other coaches with good players who have not come close to the success he has had. Like Psy said, he knows how to manage the good players.

Brownman, I am with you 100%. I think Phil is definitely one of the most overated coaches in all of sports history. He fell into his first bulls job, and had the gift of coaching the greatest player of all time along with one of the best Robin's to Batman of all time in Scottie Pippen. They hand delivered championships. Then you get to coach the most dominant center of this era, with Kobe now the games best all around player. Come on now, how much actual coaching did he have to do, it was more like just being a team moderator.

Watching that game and his decisions made me sick. Fisher looks like a pylon out there, and yes he is a good leader and a veteran, but brooks is having his way with him, and fish isnt even giving anything on the offensive end. Farmar has been playing well and so has brown, look at the job they did when fish was suspended. Another problem I have is Ariza, yes he is a long body and can tip some passes and pick up a couple loose balls, but he does not move his feet at all on the defensive end, and looks terrible in the post, expecting his reach to make up for his legs. If phil was such a good coach he would have made the obvious adjustment with fisher, and gotten in ariza's ass about standing still on d. Not to mention, sitting Kobe to start the 4th...GET THE FUCK OUTTA HERE! Come on really.

Now I believe the Lakers will win game 7, just b/c of the home court, where everybody knows, scrubs can even shine on their home floor. Final score Lakers 110-88.

Everyone has made some great points, im not really trying to bash the lakers, I happen to be a fan of theirs. I just think using the argument that Phil has 9 rings and is therefore great is flawed. You shouldnt measure him but what he accomplishes when he has the most talent but how he performs when hes handed a lemon. The year he lost to Detroit, the several years he lost to the suns and last year in the finals. There is no way anyone can sit here and say he has been getting the most out of his talent recently.

PS I dont wager on my own team so im not bitter about losing money on them or anything. I do hope Boston pulls through for my series wager though!

SO when they won by 40 they're supposed to right. Playoffs are about game to game adjustments. It is not just the coach, the players have to execute. Maybe Farmar should start or play more, he might even start next year but dont hate on Phil. Last tiime I checked Jordan didn't win until Phil came, same goes with shaq. Even when they didn't have Jordan they were one bad call away(on huebert davis were scottie pippen had got all ball) from making it and possibly winning another championship without Jordan. So dont give me this crap about Phil not being that good of a coach. Some guy named Red or something like that also has 9 but he never had good players. If all it takes is good players to win the Yankees and Cowboys should win every year right. Stop the Hating.

Some guy named Red never had good players? Bill Russell was one of the 3 greatest centers of all time (and by far the quickest). Havlicek, Sam Jones, Cousy, Heinsohn, Nelson, Satch Sanders etc. etc. I hope you were joking or that I missed something in the translation.

Thats is so wrong... A great coach IMO is able to get the most out of his players and the great ones are able to make average players great or at least to another level.
Rick Adleman this year has been a great coach...he does what a great coach does....get the most out of his players
