Report: Harvin failed a drug test at the NFL Combine

By Ben Volin | Friday, April 3, 2009, 09:47 AM

Percy Harvin wowed the NFL talent evaluators with his speed, strength and feather-soft hands at the Gators’ Pro Day two weeks ago, but his draft stock may be taking a hit now with a report surfacing of Harvin failing a drug test at the NFL Combine.
Citing sources inside the NFL, the Mock Draft Web site NFLDraftBible.com reports that Harvin was one of at least four people to test positive for marijuana two months ago in Indianapolis, along with Illinois CB Vontae Davis, UTEP kicker Jose Martinez and Boston College DT B.J. Raji, whose name also came out yesterday in a separate report from Sports Illustrated.
In a separate article on its Web site, NFLDraftBible also reports that USC linebackers Brian Cushing and Clay Matthews tested positive for steroids.
The five non-kickers are all currently listed as first-round picks in the ESPN.com mock draft. It is unclear how much their draft stock will be affected by these reports, if the reports are accurate, though one source said it brings up “serious character issues” for a player to fail a drug test when he knows he has one coming up.
The NFL’s drug policy states that a positive test for street drugs, which includes marijuana, enters a player into the initial stage of the NFL’s drug program, making him subject to random testing and a fine or suspension if he tests positive a second time.
Harvin’s agent, Joel Segal, has not returned an e-mail sent on Wednesday seeking comment.

Unreal, the only thing I can think of is that those guys must have thought they could sneak a buddies urine sample in for there's not realizing that they actually have someone who watches you take out your junk and piss into the cup. I've seen Raji as high as 4 in those mock drafts, if he falls to the back of the first round you're talking about a 25-30 million $$$ loss if not more, that's alot of fucking weed dumass.

weed dont bother me as much as the steroids. a lot of the guys on here that crucified Bonds will spin it some way to excuse the fact that both the USC LB's tested positive for steroids

i mean are all USC's wins tainted now ? ? if Bonds records are then i think USC should get losses for all those games

ok - not really. but i made my point

Article is fake, none of the players listed tested positive. If they did, they would have received letters indicating they did. no letters were sent out.

I believe you. Anyone that would make this post at 3:02 AM at least deserves the benefit of the doubt. It does not make a lot of sense on the surface of it all but I wonder why people put out false reports in the first place. We have been seeing it a lot lately. If you find out more please post it. Thanks.

The NFL doesnt care about steroids. Just look at Castillo from the Chargers. He fails for steroids and gets drafted in the first round. Merriman fails and everyone thinks he is amazing.

I'm not even sure why the NFL tests for drugs that arent PEDs. Does anyone think weed is going to make you better at football?

Several players who have tested positive in the past have beaten the rap by contesting the lab that performed the test. Labs that do the testing are not all geared up for verifying their own results. QC is poor. Labs are also required to conduct a gas chromatograhy/mass spectrometry analysis which will show all compounds in your blood or urine, thus confirming or rebuking any positive response. They don't all do that.

Often a second test will be negative, especially when the first test wasn't verified as above. I'd get down and find out the details before I came to a final conclusion.

Report: Harvin, Tate Test Positive
<!-- template inline -->Wide receivers Percy Harvin and Brandon Tate tested positive for marijuana during February's NFL scouting combine in Indianapolis, two sources told FoxSports.com.
The news could be potentially damaging to the receivers' stock during this weekend's NFL draft. <!-- INLINE NFL.com Video (BEGIN) -->

An inside look at wide receiver Percy Harvin from Florida.

<!-- INLINE NFL.com Video (END) -->Harvin was considered a first-round pick after leaving the University of Florida following his junior season. Tate was considered a possible second- to fourth-round pick after a solid college career at North Carolina.

Joel Segal, the agent who represents both players, didn't return messages from FoxSports.com seeking comment.
NFL teams received the drug-test results earlier this week, according to FoxSports.com.
Sources told FoxSports.com Harvin and Tate were the only two high-profile players to flunk their combine drug tests, and one of the sources said that fewer than a dozen players tested positive for recreational drugs.
Players who failed the tests are subject to entry into the NFL's substance-abuse program.
Harvin finished his college career with 133 receptions for 1,929 yards and 13 touchdowns and 194 carries for 1,852 yards and 19 scores. He averaged 9.5 yards per carry and 11.6 yards every time he touched the ball. He also posted a strong 4.39 seconds in the 40-yard dash at the combine.
He was at his best in big games, earning MVP honors in the 2006 Southeastern Conference championship game and totaling 171 yards and a touchdown in a victory over Oklahoma in the Bowl Championship Series national title game in January.
He lined up at receiver, running back and quarterback for the Gators but expects to do even more at the next level because several teams have already talked to him about returning kickoffs and punts.
Tate finished his career with an NCAA-record 3,523 career combined kick-return yards. Before tearing two knee ligaments midway through his senior year, he averaged 23.5 yards on his 16 receptions.
Tate, still recovering from his injury, didn't work out at the combine.

I hope nobody took that bet. Harvin with AD on turf could turn out to be one of the nfl's most exciting tandems. Only time will tell.

They will make a potent combination and both are game breakers. Harvin is so versatile. Another aspect is that maybe Peterson will be a good influence on Harvin both on and off the field. I always enjoy watching the Vikings just because of Peterson now I have more than one reason to watch them. I think it was a win win situation for the Vikings and for Harvin.

People think the wildcat with Ronnie Brown and Ricky Williams is scary... lol, this will make that look pedestrian.

Russ,

I have no problem with you man. Let's start over here and let bygones be bygones. I may be annoying SEC prick, but it's all about the pride. In any case, I can promise you one thing I know my SEC very very well. I am going to decide to post my plays this year and I hope to make everyone here some coin with SEC and some ACC action.

Flsunman: That is why I said what I said the other day. I think we have all gone through the post season trauma and we have all defended our teams and our views and perhaps we all started working from a defensive point of view. I am older and new to the sports forum in general and this one in particular. That is not to say I am wiser just because I am older. All of this banter early on here is like a moose marking out his territory. We are all homers and that is a good thing to a point. You are strong on SEC and you live in Texas so you get the Big 12 everyday in the local papers and news. You are a potential double threat. I have learned more about the SEC and the Pac 10 in the last couple of months than I could have ever imagined. I have tried to expand my views and I am trying to familiarize myself in more depth than I ever have before this year. Like I said before anything I say or write in here is open to conversation and/or criticism. It is kind of fun to get your blood pressure up once in a while even if the topic is controversial and probably too subjective for any final resolution. It dawned on me this morning that we are coming out of spring practice and into a void for a couple of months. That is a good time for research. What I am trying to do is to develop a new perspective and expand my knowledge at the same time. From this point on I plan to do my homework, keep my eyes open, my ears to the ground, and most of all to share info and serve up topics of discussion that can make us better handicappers. If I have my way our teams will be playing in a rematch next January. Until then we can keep the gloves off. Best of luck.
