I find if you have all your ducks in a row, late changes should not disrupt your plans. Only if track conditions change should waylay any handicapper.

From one handicapper to another I'm just sharing some wisdom. I have my top 4 contenders done overnight, thus any scratches occur I still have alternates. Now if all 4 scratch I just pass the race.

It's a very difficult game, as you well know.
