Bought my first house 3 months ago and we want to fence in our backyard so my Lab can have free range w/out us worrying about him.

At first we were thinking privacy fence, but the neighbors on one side we've seen outside like 3 times in 3 months, and the neighbors to the other side are actually really cool and have 2 dogs and 2 young kids, so now we're thinking just a chain link will do. ALthough I want the black rubber kind.

Anyone have any experience buying a fence lately? Am I better off going to Lowes or Home Depot or to an actual fence place? And should I have the people I bought it from install it, or shoudl I try to find some cheap labor to get the job done. I'm willing to help install it but I sure as shit don't want to do the whole thing myself.

Very random, i know, but chime in if you have any suggestions. :toast:

What kind of fence??? I can tell you now the 1st thing to do is get on Ebay and buy 20% off coupon to lowes or home depot if you can find them. Bought like 10 of them for $31 and used them when i buy lumber for jobs. Nothing like put $400 in your pocket before you even start a $5000 job. Put up a cedar fence it will cost you about $11 a LFT. Pine will cost you $8 lft if you do it your self.

I know you don't want a pvc privacy fence (which I have) but I would suggest going w/ a fence co.

Also when you make any type of agreement MAKE SURE the hauling away of the extra dirt is in the agreemeent....

you would be surprised how much extra dirt there is....

Just recently had another fence put in around the yard. have had three different fence companies do the work in the last 15 years. Drive around your neighborhood and look at the fences. There is usually a small plaque on the top of the fence if a fence company did it.I got about three different bids from the best looking fences in my area and went with that. I had a 8 ft privacy fence put in and glad i did get the 8 foot.

Have you thought about the wireless fence? I bought one on ebay for about $150. You can plug the unit into a regular outlet anywhere in your house/garage. You set the range between 5-180' diameter and it sends out a signal and the dogs collar will beep when he gets close to the boundary. If he keeps going he will get a shock. My dogs were trained in 2 days and one is a very hyper 1 year old who used to chase cars. Once they get shocked they know when they hear the beeping to not go any further.

first thing make sure you put the fence on your property and have a proper survey which should have been done by the title company before you bought the house!! I have heard horror stories of people spending thousands on a fence only to have a neighbor say that is 6" on my property move it!! Invisible fences are good if your dog can be trained by shock lmao!!
