I was eating at Mix last night, which is a rather nice place here in Vegas, and when I got the bill I noticed that the half bottle of wine that my woman ordered wasn't on the bill. I wasn't worried about Mandalay Bay missing the cash but I figured that there was a good chance that management would find out the waiter screwed up and bill him for it. I don't know how well restaurant employees do but I figured the $67 might be a big hit to him so I pointed it out and had the bill corrected. My woman tells me that the waiter intentionally declined to bill me for the wine as a way of complimenting her and that what I did is considered a bit of an insult; after asking her the obvious question, that being if management approves of this, she said that they do. I'm not much for restaurant ettiquete so help me out. Is she right or just BS'ing me?

Etiquette could be different in Vegas or in a casino, but while I've heard of occasionally waiters giving free appetizers and rarely entrees, a $67 half bottle is a little much especially for a woman who dined with a man.

I'd say it was probably a mistake.

I'd say theres about a 50/50 chance he just forgot or did it intentionally hoping you would use some of that extra $67 you saved on his tip

25-35% of a restaurants(average) revenue(profit) is from liquior sales, that was a mistake and maybe an intential one like mentioned above; But has nothing to do with etiquette. You deffinatly did the right thing.

not sure what goes on in a vegas resaurant, but here is what i have seen some watresses do back when i worked for a guy who owned a family restaurant,..........i think they thought they were smarter than the owner,.....they would give free salads/drinks(coffee,soda,etc) desserts all in the attempt to get a larger tip,.......im sure it worked well to some extent but in the long run it didnt pan out,........i watched every single one of them get fiiiirrrrred,........yeah even the hot ones got canned!!,.......so maybee the guy left the price of that wine off the bill by mistake or maybee he does the same little scam as those waitresses, in hopes of getting a larger tip.:suomi:

IMO it was left off the bill so that you would leave about a 30 dollar tip and Both of you would have about 30 more than you thought you had.
Waitress leave stuff off ALL the time for me Knowing that might lead to Big tip ! Sometimes i tell them, an sometime i dont.

Belch,
I'm on post review, however I work at a place that serves $80-$100 Kobe beef, with an extensive wine selection. To be honest, if the woman is dining with a man that is a bit much to yield.

I would lean towards the intentional mistake. This is similar to attaching a coupon onto a cash bill after the person has left (my place doesn't use coupons though).

She's very good looking and was wearing some slightly revealing clothing. Tigerguy, is pointing out the mistake to the waiter considered an insult?

This happens all the time in restuarants. It was a mistake. I assure you the waiter was not giving you or your wife anything.

Belch:

I can understand a woman wanting to think that leaving out the charge was a compliment to her, but to insist that it was an insult is an insult to you. You did what you thought was right and should be commended for it, not criticized because it hurt the ego of your companion.

I couldn't help but think of this Scripture passage when I read this thread...

Scripture: Matthew 6:1-6, 16-18

1 "Beware of practicing your piety before men in order to be seen by them; for then you will have no reward from your Father who is in heaven. 2 "Thus, when you give alms, sound no trumpet before you, as the hypocrites do in the synagogues and in the streets, that they may be praised by men. Truly, I say to you, they have received their reward. 3 But when you give alms, do not let your left hand know what your right hand is doing, 4 so that your alms may be in secret; and your Father who sees in secret will reward you. 5 "And when you pray, you must not be like the hypocrites; for they love to stand and pray in the synagogues and at the street corners, that they may be seen by men. Truly, I say to you, they have received their reward. 6 But when you pray, go into your room and shut the door and pray to your Father who is in secret; and your Father who sees in secret will reward you. 16 "And when you fast, do not look dismal, like the hypocrites, for they disfigure their faces that their fasting may be seen by men. Truly, I say to you, they have received their reward. 17 But when you fast, anoint your head and wash your face, 18 that your fasting may not be seen by men but by your Father who is in secret; and your Father who sees in secret will reward you.

If we can believe this account(and granted, that is a big IF), then Belch did the right thing. But he loses all credit with God (and me) by coming into this forum and publicly proclaiming his righteouness(not to mention bragging about how good-looking his girlfriend is!). I hope his girlfriend can read as well because I believe she will find this whole discussion insulting to her as well.

I didn't proclaim righteousness; as I stated earlier, if I thought Mandalay Bay would have had to eat the money I would have gladly pocketed it and slept well. I only pointed it out because I felt that the waiter would get screwed.

I have to believe that this was an attempt at stealing by the waiter. It's not an insult for you to point it out, however if you did so in a loud way, or possibly were flambouyant with your hands and then pointed to the bill, then this could be bad for the waiter as his manager might see and inquire as to the nature of the "missbill".

Now, I do have a few regular tables who spend 1000+ for 5 people, and it is not uncommon for me to not charge them for things. Some of this is related to the rush, and just not being able to remember everything, and some of this is related to the fact that they are already tipping me so huge and by cutting them deals it keeps them coming back.

Belch, IMHO you did the right thing.

1. If it was a mistake, you might have saved his job or at least an ass chewing, and you did the honest thing as well.

2. If he did it on purpose and was trying for an increased tip, he may be disappointed that you pointed it out to him, but I don't think he would be offended by your honesty.

3. If he did it on purpose as some sort of implied, sophisticated compliment to your wife, he may realize that you were unaware of this "custom," but I don't think he would be offended.

So in any event, you may have saved his job, and you didn't offend him, just your wife. I assume you tipped both accordingly. :thumbsup2:
