I'm totally computer ignorant. (Still don't know how to do a "back-up". Do you need special preformated disks or what?)

Curious to know how old on average is your home computer and how long do you expect it to be ok?

My 1st was a packard bell, had it since 98 running Win 98. Works like new. Use a dell also I've had for about a year. Works well. See no reason they dont work another 5 years.

Computers will usually last a long time, but you probably don't want to have it for that long.

I believe you should always have at least 1/2 the processor speed of whatever the top consumer pc's are running. That way you dont' throw a lot of money away, but don't have a pc that's too outdated.

Like right now, 3.2ghz is about the top, so a 1.6 or so is what I'd consider to be a minimum speed.

They say in Kazakhstan that American technology very good, but I am not so sure.
I took this machine,

and make connection with this one I was given to from a friend,
robik_set.jpg

I then go to the compusa but the disk I bought from there can not go inside anywhere. Does anyone have any suggestions. I mean any suggestions at all, concerning my life or what I should do and stuff.

Sadly my laptop is now three and a half years old. I have replaced my hard drive with one double the size after the old one developed several bad sectors, probably from being dropped several times.

I plan to replace in about 4 or 5 months. Four years is really the limit for how long I want to use a machine.

You have a verrrry old computer. IIRC, the 586's ran at ~200 mhz, while the 486's were 66 or 133 mhz. Either way, it's time to upgrade. You can pick up a 1ghz computer for next to nothing and it'll be more than 5x faster than what you're using now.

If I read that correct

You can get a Dell online with all the speed and capacity and features you will need at home for under $500 bucks. Or go to a resale place where you can do better. They get equipment trade ins on almost new stuff from folks that have to have all the latest bells and whistles on their PC.

I don't think my computer is slow! Maybe I'm not up on what's what. But I do agree with Strut, that min 256 is what is needed. I just hate to loose my programs.
The one I use the most is available in XP, but that does not get good reviews.
I learned a lot in the laptop posts. Don't think that I want one of those.
This computer is 4 years old in March.

Why settle for 256 mb of memory when another 256mb stick can be bought online for ~$50

If you add a chip of ram to whatever speed PC you have some doof on Ebay will buy it for what you paid 2 yes later. I just sold a dell laptop that was p3 800 mhz for 750 cuz i through in a 50 buck ram chip. New Dell laptop with 2.4 celeron is the same price but with 256 ddr ram. mine had 768 SD.

Also you could toss in 25 dollar cdrw of any speed and people dream about the CDs they can now make with al that ram. ooh lala
=P

I wouldnt try to sell it for that much but its ebay so they choose the price. What ya gonna do..
