before it dies. I am going away for 3 weeks. Any tips? Isn't there some device that will keep my car battery charged? If I disconnect it will it help?

3 weeks away? You should be fine unless you've been having battery problems. Might want to top off the water in the battery.

Why would you need to recharge it?

Confusing question to me.

Sorry,

A car battery needs to be recharged after a certain amount of time. Otherwise, it goes dead. Driving recharges the battery, but I won't be around to do that.

Three weeks is nothing to fret over.......unless your car is sitting in sub-zero freezing temperatures or in 123 degree heat.

Even then, chances are favorable you would be fine.

When you drive the alternator recharges the battery

After a long period of time without driving, battery goes "dead"

3 weeks is no problem at all

3 weeks should be OK. A solar device exists that you plug into cig lighter and lay out on dash for long-term inactivity... good for say an RV in LV, that may sit unused for a spell.

Worst case scenario is a simple jump start, vehicle should be able to sit 3 weeks, usually with very minimal current used for clock function, etc. If vehicle's electrical system is sound ( no short circuits, good battery, etc.) , a month is doable.
six months or so is questionable without solar back-up.
