I say Off Topic because no one seems to care about the ponies much any more.

But whats the deal with this track and not being able to fill a daily card.

I was in Reno semi recently and they didn't run that Wed due to not enough horses and I look at their card today and all short fields.

Thinking with Bay Meadows closing trainers and owners don't want to home their horses in Bay area, but the fair circuit is still alive and well?

you will get big crickets with that question here LOL..I firmly believe the trend is to break, train, and race out east. But that is only one mans opinion..and I do love the ponies.

There is a shortage of horses through-out the country.
Just today Hollywood and Churchill couldnt fill there cards.
Golden Gate filled todays card, they are doing better than
the other tracks.

The economy is hurting the horse owners also.
They cant afford it.

racing in California is like racing on an island where are the ship-ins going to come from to help fill the cards?

They get some from New Mexico and Arizona.(Sun and Turf just ended)
But not enough.Remember that those are dirt tracks and GG is synthetic
and it takes a race or two or three untill they are used to it,if they ever do.
Just in case you are handicaping.

Hollywood Park officially went to Thurs-Sunday racing last week.
(Friday-Monday on Holiday weekends). As many have mentioned...I doubt they make it past the fall meet. Bring on Del Mar!

I bet this track often, as it is the only track running at Derby Lane at around the 5:00 hour...I am not too familiar with the fields there, but I know at times there are some descent payouts

I think simulcast racing was the beginning of the end and that was like twenty years ago.

Used to be we all hung out at Bay Meadows then came simulcast and we split into fourths as my crowd I hung with went to the closest fair grounds.

No one was at the track anymore.

Also back then we only bet the 9 race card on the day and there was a down time between meets as we recouped sort of to speak in those 2 to 3 weeks.

Now days you go to the fairgrounds and a race going off some where every 5 minutes you lose your ass and lose interest.

That and they have trouble recruiting the next generation.

Even Del Mar has no Monday racing this year.

Tracks should move the weekday racing to evenings, but no one agrees.

90 percent of the public has jobs. People that have jobs make money.

Still people say, they shouldn't do it.

It makes too much sense, at the very least try it once a week.. Could it really hurt????

Horse racing needs an overhaul there is no question about it.. Younger generations needs to appreciate this sport or it will be downgraded immensely..

California already lost Bay Meadows, and Bay Meadows is just a piece of dirt right now as the company who purchased it went bankrupt or something so all construction has been stopped.

Hollywood has a meet or two left to its existence, then that place will be overhauled..

Its friggin sad, I have a lot of memories at these tracks.

Was listening to radio horse segment and a guy said that there are no true champion horses this generation to excite the sports world.

Then he said the reason is and isn't this so typical of our generation, that the horses that are breeding have a false pedigree due to steroids and other drugs.

Back in the day I knew all the horses of futures past and the breeding pedigree.... route, sprint, mudders, grass etc. and I learned this from the old timers I hung with, you know passing down to generations.

Are race people going to get excited if they see a foal from Big Brown as a first time starter?

This is very sad to see for someone who lives about 2 miles from Bay Meadows and spend way to much of my childhood there with my grandfather. As others have said, the horse racing scene in the Bay Area has seemed to be hurting the last 5 or so years, not enough talent and not enough fans. I remember Bay Meadows being packed almost every Friday night, it was a fun place. Especially the $1 beers and $1 hotdogs. If they could have got that damn slot ordinance to pass, Bay Meadows will still exist . Now as Gyno said, its just empty space that will be eventually filled with $2mm condos, as that land, though close to the free-way is worth a whooooole lot of dough.

Never been to any of the tracks in Cal... The Bay Meadows story sounds a lot like what happened to Hialeah Race Track here in S.Fla. Beautiful historic track shut down several years ago after struggling to stay afloat (remember those opening scenes in Miami Vice with those pink flamingos). Gulfstream appears to be getting a boost from the addition of slots two years ago and underwent nice renovations.. Calder just got approved for slots and will be adding them next season.. They are scheduling renovations... Time will tell...

Joey...when the bookmaking outfit I was working for when we were on the run (early nineties) our office was two blocks from Bay Meadows...me and my friends were at the track every day and also on Friday nights...we lasted about two months before we had to hit the trail again...some good memories...:103631605
