I've started taking whey powder to help w/ strength/muscle
gains.

I've read in some forums where some people take it in the
morning, and some right after lifting.

For those that have experience at this, which do you think is
better - or do you think it matters at all?

I've been mixing it in with my cereal in the morning so far.

Thanks, FZ

Take it as soon as you're done lifting. Thats the most important time for muscle recoup.

Heres a small article about it....

So now you know the benefits and how much you should take in, but the question arises, when is the best time to take protein into your body? Well, one of the times that your body is in need of it the most is immediately following your workout since your body starts to heal the muscle right after a workout, taking protein at that time will give the body the fuel it needs to heal and grow.

Following your workout a good idea to take in small meals containing high protein in about three to four hour intervals, thereby providing your muscles with a constant supply of protein to help your muscles heal. It is also vital to take in a protein drink or a slow burning protein (such as cottage cheese) before you go to bed therefore providing your muscles with protein, since your body will be slowly depleted of protein as you sleep. Breakfast is a key meal as well, because your body awaits nourishment after sleeping for 8-12 hours. One of the best tips of advice I can give you though, is to eat consistently, day in and day out

I have used a lot of different proteins, but I HIGHLY recommend using BIOTEST SURGE as a post-workout shake. Drink it immediately after you lift. It has the correct ratio of (high glycemic) carbs to (quality) protein (I think 3:1 is recomended). Do not add fat to this shake as it slows the absorption process.

The stuff is rather expensive and can easily be duplicated with some gatorade POWDER and some good protein, but I love the Surge, so I dont try to substitute.

Go to T-Nation and you will see a lot of talk about it. Trust anything you read from John Berardi on nutrition.

After you're done although a little protein in the morning won't hurt you at all either.

It depends on what ur eating the rest of the day, I try to get a minimum of a gram of protein per lb of body weight, so I actually take one upon waking up, after working out, and right before bed.

I drink whey all day long. I double up before and after my bowflex sessions.

The only time you should need it is immedialtely after lifting - with some simple carbs for faster absorbtion.

I agree with everyone else that RIGHT after lifting is the best time, followed by first thing in the morning as the 2nd best time.

Unless you live in the third world, you likely consume plenty of protein. Supplements rarely benefit the average gym goer.

Dude, are you saying I wasted $30 on whey powder? You're
bursting my bubble.

Right after your workout! I also have it in the morning, but I use it more as a replacement meal than anything. Never seem to make the time to make breakfast, so a protein shake gets the metabolism going and holds me off till lunch time.

I've tried a bunch of stuff over the years, and basically I think most of it is just mental. If a $30 container of protein makes me more likely to stick to a decent diet, and to roll into the garage after work to lift, then it's done the job. I stick to protein and creatine, if anything, it keeps me motivated.
