1) SheBar is in the biz and her boss tells her that not only is BluRay a growing product line, but that "DVDs are on the way out".

True or False?

2) Tells her that since a PS3 is the same thing as a BluRay, buying a PS3 is "the same deal as buying a BluRay player" (at about $300)

True or False?

I've got to research a bit but am bummed if both answers above are True

This began with us needing a separate DVD player for the bedroom which I figure we can easily score a good one for well under $100. Now she's saying that according to the boss, we better get a BluRay and that furthe, we're looking at $300 as a "good deal".

And if the Road Warrior says it, it must be true..

I dont think DVD's are on the way out...Blue ray is better for Hi Def since it takes more data.

true Max to your concluding statement.

But that Wiki summary sure makes it sound as if DVDs are going to fade if we also conclude that HDTV is the core product for televisions in coming years.

Blu ray won the battle over HDDVD, you can get nice hdvd players for on the cheap now, i think an optical drive for the pc runs about 20 bucks.

When i got my ps3 it was the smartest option(pricewise) as far as blu ray players go and the game system was an added bonus.
Bluray movies are awesome especially if you got a monster telly

Both statements are true....HD is out and Blu Ray is in. Universal,Warner Bros and a bunch of others major media corporations are starting to relase movies on Blu Ray and NOT DVD...

Also yes a PS3 is a blue ray player which for the price you cant go wrong(even if you bought it to just watch movies, still much cheaper)

If you're not the type to illegally download your movies, I'd say Blu Ray is the way to go... If you are the type to DL your movies, hooking up a PC to that monster television is the way to go.

PS3 is definitely the best way to get into Blu Ray, as I believe cnet has rated it ther #1 player since it's introduction.

Thanks fellas for the replies so far

Ayuh, I don't illegally download and I do have a couple of pretty big ass televisions.

Just a bit grumpy that we're back into that cycle which seems to come up every five or six years now where we need to buy a new technology.

But then again, the product is certainly an upgrade.

I had posted in a COMP&TECH forum thread here at the Rx about getting a cable to connect my PC to the television and that seems like the next step at least until the television in my office (third overall in our house) is HDTV

Get a 1080p TV if you dont have one already with a blu ray player along with a blu ray movie of course and see home entertainment THROUGH DIFFERENT EYES.

Be warned the movies cost more, although with netflix this doesnt matter :)

My PS2 plays DVDs, but it is the worst DVD player I have ever had....hard time reading discs, very little options, etc.

I am inclined to believe that although a PS3 plays BluRay, the player may not be the best.

Get a PS3 so you have the Blu-Ray option. Then go out and buy Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots. I've been playing it almost non stop the last few days. The game is fantastic.

This is far from true, PS3 rates very well as far as a Blu Ray player... Check out cnet & the avsforum for reviews.

Actually, the PS3 Blu-ray player is excellent. I've had no problems whatsoever. Plus, Sony releases updates frequently that adds options, etc... When you look at the price of a PS3, which is a game system as well compared to a standalone Blu-Ray player, you are much better off getting the PS3. Make sure you get the remote for it too.

I've seen some Blu-Rays set up with top TV's and the movies almost seemed too real.

As I watched it, it seemed like they were actors on a stage or what was obviously a studio.

It was almost too much detail...

Bro.. my take on the subject is that yes DVDs will eventually fall out in favor. This is going to take way longer then anyone will predict, several years if not a decade

Logically, it doesn't make sense to go out and replace every DVD you own because the quality is better. As far as Blu-ray, yes they are becoming more and more popular and as it was said earlier that they came out on top over HDDVD

I don't feel that DVDs will be obsolete anytime soon. If anything it will be CDs that will go the way of the black and white TV. Hard drives for your computer are going to go before the DVD, thats what I'm feeling anyway with Flash drives

But its easier for the guy in Best Buy to try and sell someone on hey DVDs are on the way out.. buy this PS3 because it'll play Blu-rays and this is the new thing
If you get upset with technological advances, just wait for Blu-rays big brother to step in and take over for Blu-ray

djmatt, good point about hard drives. They will be obsolete soon enough. I will never forget the first time I used a USB flash drive. Put 50 mp3's on one and a few seconds later had all them available on my laptop. No software, no load times, very little space being used.

Who ever thought we would have 8gb of instantaneous storage on something the size of your index finger?

Thanks for the first tip.

As for the second, I haven't sat down and played a video game at home in about 15 years. No interest whatsoever.

Thanks for the feedback, Matt.

I've got maybe a couple dozen DVDs - mostly music concerts.

Never had an interest in purchasing DVD movies which can be rented for a couple bucks via Netflix.

I actually am a bit baffled by the mindset that buys a half dozen DVD movies a month at $19.95 or more.

I, like most of you, have friends with DVD movie collections numbering the hundreds and representing literally thousands of dollars in cost.

Baffling.
