My oldest son is a senior in HS, getting ready to graduate in around 3 months.
Here's a situation we've run into:
A new kid moves here from Fla., my son gives him a ride to school one day. The kid fires up a joint. Then the new kid goes into school and someone tells a teacher that he smells like weed. He gets called into the pricipal's office. The kid won't say how he got to school that day, so the principal calls his mom. His mom tells them that my son took him. So they get my son and go out to his car. They say it smells like weed, so he gets suspended for a week. School policy, they say.
Ok, so my son serves the suspension and he has a conversation with a vice-principal. My son is concerned that when other teachers find out that he's been suspended, they will be pissed at him and look at him differently. The VP assures him that he won't tell anyone why he's been suspended. No other teacher mentions it, but one teacher was giving him shit, piling on the homework and tells him, 'he never should've did what he did'. So now my son is pissed, not only because the VP betrayed him but also because that one teacher is now trying to screw him over.
My son takes school seriously, wants to go to college, carrys a 3.0 GPA. This teacher gives him a D. He usually gets As and Bs. And her class is personal finance which is very easy, they teach you how to write checks and balance checkbooks, etc. Most everyone gets an A in this class. He says without take D, his GPA would be around 3.3. So I have to do something. I know I have to write a letter, but does anybody know to whom? Does anyone know if it is illegal for a principal to tell a teacher why a kid has been suspended? I'm pretty sure another teacher isn't supposed to punish a student if he's already served the suspension, I would think. I know, it would be hard to prove, but I have to at least try..do something. Does anyone know where I should start or send the letter?
Any other comments/suggestions would be appreciated. Just trying to get that D to hopefully a B. He actually got a 100% on the final exam. He is pissed that this will probably effect his attempts to get accepted into the colleg he wants.
Thanks in advance for any helpful advise/insight. The student/parent handbook is complicated as hell..thanks.

if hes graduating in 3 months he already has college acceptence letters. this makes no sense.

this would mean virtually nothing other than a bad feeling to a senior year.

I would have called bullshit against your son getting suspended. You can't suspend a kid for driving someone else to school (who lights one up).

I would have created a huge shit storm over it, that is total bullshit. I don't care if it's school policy, is WRONG.

You need to talk to his school counselor. BUT , don't approach it as accusing the teacher of giving him an unjustified grade as punishment , just approach it as a concearned parent concearned about his grade falling from a/b to a d. ... they should make test scores available to you.

I'd go to the principal and everyone else who matters & make sure they are aware of the teacher giving him a hard time.
And if that particular teacher is present during any conversation or meeting, I would give him or her hell.

I would make it clear to every one of them that this is school, not an effin prison, that they aren't masters of the freakn universe, & that they aren't going to disrespect your son & treat him that way!

You're son isn't in a position to stand up for himself so you need to do it for him.

Be polite in the beginning but if you don't like what they have to say show your azz.

I'm normally the easiest going guy in the world but if you mess with my kids watch out...

I would think the Teacher would have to justify the grade if your son got 100's on tests.

i would go right to the principal with this, screw the VP.

pretty hard to justify the grade

How do you know the other kid didn't say something? Could have told other kids and the teacher found out that way.

in ohio you should have received written notice of suspension, and also an opportunity to review/discuss the suspension. also an opportunity to appeal the suspension to the schools superintendent and then appeal to the school board after that.

usually the school makes you sign something in order to prove that you got these things according to the law.

it doesn't matter what the VP (or anyone) told your kid.

your kid should have told them the car didn't smell like that when he was last in it, it must have happened when the other kid said he had to go back to the car to get his book bag... since he wasn't with the kid he can't say what he did or didn't do.

anyway it's all too late now, during your suspension meeting you all could have discussed things like grades, college yada yada.

if you didn't get the paperwork, then that means one of two things, one:they didn't give you or your kid the paperwork, or two: they gave your kid the paperwork and he forged your signature to it.

if it's number two then your kids getting suspended again.

you're lucky, in ohio if a kid commits a crime they can be expelled for up to one year.

also in ohio you are not allowed to make up tests/homework or labs for the time you are suspended. sounds like his other teachers cut him a break and one didn't.

oh one more thing... the damn teachers unions are so powerful it wouldn't surprise me if the school HAS to inform all teachers why a kid is suspended (no matter the reason). claiming they need to know as a safety or health issue.

the GPA part doesnt make sense as another pointed out.. but more importantly the teacher should have to have real proof of why his grade is the way it is. I would be calling the teacher out for starters... the school already messed up imo so they may cover this up as well but the teacher is pushing it past the point of the original suspension or you son is not telling the truth somewhere (which it sounds you do not believe that so the benefit of the doubt is understandable).

My wife is a teacher so let me tell you from my point of view and being around her and her discussions, the schools are scared to death of parents and possible lawsuits.

I think he should've been suspended and it sounds like he accepted it like a man. Once the kid lit up, he should've pulled over and asked him to get out.

What to do now? I'd make an appointment with the vice principal first with my son waiting in the lobby, then bring him in. I believe in giving the teachers and admin the benefit of the doubt and would make an attempt to have a professional conversation with him/her about what's going on. Then you go from there. Either you're satisfied or not.

Whatever you do, don't write a letter. You see it all the time on these boards. People are much different in person than how they come off in writing.

Pulled over and let the kid out? He is not smoking or doing anything illegal - he is just in the presence of someone doing something illegal. This kid isnt going to handily stop people from doing drugs.

They suspended him (in the story - in my opinion, kid probably smoked himself but thats just a guess with no evidence) because his car smelled like weed - if his brother had used the car and smoked and then he drove to school - should he be suspended? It just makes no sense

And to others - 1 D can change a GP .3 points - the poster did not say cumulative GPA - just GPA - so the kid is probably talking about for this semester 6 A's and 1 D = 3.5, 6A's and 1 B = 3.8
