Long suggested on TheRX the benefits of taking fish oil, and believe many here have followed my lead.

Here is some things to currently consider if your taking or planning on taking fish oil.

1. First and formost, DO NOT USE ANY FISH OIL THAT IS NOT LISTED AS PHARMACITICAL GRADE......AND PREFERABLY 3RD PARTY TESTED.

2. One needs to know the amount of EPA and DHA in their capsules.......read the label closely, as some servings are more than one capsule........for example, three capsules per serving means the label would be 1/3 FOR EACH CAPSULE.

3. To be effective, one must take a COMBINED total of at least 1.2 grams(1200 mgs) of EPA and DHA daily to get desired results.........I try and take at least 600 mg's of each on a daily basis.

4. Do your very best to consume your fish oil with a food that contains some source of natural VITAMIN E, as this is needed for the oil to be absorbed properly.

My current top choices in FISH OIL BRANDS are .......

1. BARLEANS
2. OMEGA BERRY by Purity Products
3. NORDIC NATURALS(probably the best overall, but the most expensive).

Take care,

No, I'm a "fish" out of water when it comes to gambling, thus the name FISHhead.

Lose-lose-lose-win-lose-lose-lose-lose-lose-win-lose-lose-lose-lose, etc., etc.

I don't see why flaxseed isnt just is a good though? Still lots of Omega 3's without the mercury (or paying a crap load to have it filtered out)

FH, any response to that?

I prefer having salmon 3 times a week to get my Omega 3. I take enough supplements. Would rather have food wherever possible. Get flaxseed from low carbohydrate bread. That's just me. Either way, good to have the mentioned nutrients in your system.

To get a combined total of 1200 mgs of DHA and EPA......

Barleans- 12.00 mo.
Omega Berry- 20.00 mo
N. Naturals- 27.00+ mo on sale

I mix and match them on a daily basis to get my 1200 mg dosage.......plus, feel this gives me a better variety of marine life.

For instance, 4 capsules of Barleans is needed to get 1200..........or 2 capsules of Barleans and 1 Omega Berry..........or just 2 capsules of Omega Berry. Currently, have no Nordic Naturals on hand. By the way, I keep my supply in the fridge.

Just a caution on taking fish oil. One of the reasons fish oil is good for you is because it acts like a low-grade aspirin in the fact that it lowers inflammation. This prevents plaque from forming in the arteries.

I take fish oil for for sinusitis (inflammation of the sinuses) and for general overall lowering of inflammation since I have had rheumatoid arthritis in the past.

However, fish oil can lower platelet levels just like aspirin can. I had my platelet level lowered below suggested levels so I only take 2 capsules instead of 3.

Platelets are what causes your blood to clot.

Here is a previous post outlining the concerns I had:

http://www.therxforum.com/showthread.php?t=610670

For those of you who have not read my health results thread I speak about how taking fish oil has resulted in a decrease in the platelet levels in my blood. This condition is called thrombocytopenia. Platelets are what cause your blood to clot. People with low levels of platelets can have excessive bleeding or may bruise easily. This was not my case especially since I had surgery on my mouth and didn't have problems with excessive bleeding.

What I did find out is that since I was taking 3 fish oil tablets a day that this was affecting my platelet level, causing it to be slightly low. The previous year I was only taking 2 fish oil tablets a day and my platelet levels were in the normal range.

I take fish oil because it is an anti-inflammatory. I have sinusitis (inflammation of the sinuses) and fish oil helps. I decided to take 3 tablets per day instead of 2 tablets per day to see if it would help inflammation even more and it did.

When my doctor suggested I stop taking fish oil tablets to see if my platelet level went up I stopped taking them for a week and was re-tested. The tests came out that my level went up meaning that the fish oil was causing a lowered platelet level.

Lowering platelet levels is not always a negative thing. People with increased risk of stroke or heart attack can be helped by having their platelet level lowered. I just wanted to warn you guys that if you take fish oil it can lower your platelet level below normal.

Here is a link that explains more:

Doing a search on "fish oil" platelets will give you even more information.

I take it as well for both my sinuses, and inflammation in my back from an injury I'm suffering through. I had ulcers and am unable to take any sort of anti-inflammatory pills, thus one of my doctors recommended the fish oil. Seems to work "ok" so far.
