Long term sufferer from depression. I actually did not know wtf was wrong. Saw doctors and took prescribed meds for anxiety and depression . Then stopped and took only the anxiety med. (xanax-alprozolam),plus sleeping pills.
No spring chicken here. But want to ask those of you that may have been on anti-depressants; which medicine did you find most helpful? (Basically, I can't take those that prevent me from sleeping even if taken in the am)

Thanks so much for replying.

Cardsfan,
Want to say I understand the bipolar part. It's hell I know from the depression side. Hang in there and if you would like to discuss, would be glad to give my new email address thru the mods.
I appreciate your input very much!!

I take 20 mg of Lexapro a day. I can't say it makes me feel numb. Never was the life of the party but I am more talkative now and don't go into dark moods for days. Only bad part is i've gained 20 pounds since I started taking it. Good luck.

I went back on Celexa today.
Is weight gain a major symptom of lexapro?
Sometimes symptoms disappear or lessen after a few weeks. If your mood has lifted, weight gain may be tolerated in some cases.
Depression can be horrible as you know.

Yes I most certainly understand. The self hatred, anger, etc. Lexapro is the only I have ever tried and feel satisfied with it so no desire to try something different. As for the weight gain, it is one of the stated side effects. However, I am 43 and don't exercise so can't say I blame all 20 pounds on it, lol. I can't say if it helps with anxiety because that was/is a issue with me.
Oh on another note, have you guys noticed if you dream more or less? I seem to dream less, or I just don't remember them. Really don't know if that matters or not.

After divorce went through a 2 year depression. Always have had seasonal effect disorder, but was never real bad.

Tried Paxil, Cymbalta, Lexapro, Zoloft with no good results. Went to my doc in Feb. and told him I need something different. Gave me
3 months of Effexor. Within a week I was back to normal. Feel great and no more anxiety.
Remember though, what works for someone might not work for you.

you should read "when panic attacks". this is a great book that preaches cbt which is all about retraining your mind. this coupled with therapy has been proven to be the better remedy for depression. of course in some instances medication should be prescribed, but not like its going out of style.
i use to suffer and this book helped me.
