Florida response says
British are malcontents

Dear A.M. Costa Rica:

I just had to respond to the opinion e-mail of Maggie Drummond in your Sept 15th edition. In it she chastised U.S. citizens for being two-faced by criticizing Costa Rica while refusing to let "British visitors" to the U.S. do the same there, telling them "if you don't like it here, go home."

I happen to live in a part of Florida that has an inordinately large amount of "British visitors" as well as "British expats" living here more or less permanently. The real story is that this particular segment of our many tourists are the biggest group of malcontents you'd ever want to meet.

What a U.S. citizen most often hears from these whiners is "The way we do it in the UK . . . . " or "Why not let us stay longer?" or " Why can't we become U.S. citizens easier? "

There is generally no contradiction in the way U.S. citizens observe others. Bottom line is we "calls 'em as we see's 'em." I am one who decided not to retire there for the obvious reasons so frequently documented in this newsletter. But there are some U.S. Gringos who like Costa Rica, so she is being very selective in her criticism.

Methinks Ms Drummond simply has a huge chip on her shoulder, like her wandering compatriots.

We let plenty of people into our country on temporary visas. What does she know about the specifics of our immigration policies? This is typical of the Brit know-it-all attitude.

One common thread runs throughout: There are very few people worldwide who are clamoring to live in the UK, just the opposite is true, like her.

Get over it, lady !

I've never had a single criticism about costa rica's immigration system :)

British expats complaining about not being allowed to stay longer is a lot different than me complaining about corrupt police, bad service at restaurants, retarded traffic accident procedures, or price gouging because of the color of my skin.

they must have a hard time getting out with all the French, Indians, Russians, Romanians, Bulgarians etc etc etc trying to get in (there is also a considerable amount of citizens from the darn rebel colony LOL)

Every time I go to London there are less and less Brits.....now I know where they are going ROFL (Well there and Spain of course)

In summary it shows you are a good bookmaker ......that line you offered was very very safe for you LOL

Reminds me of those jay leno skits where he would go out on the street and ask people questions. Some people in the US couldn't even name the president that was in office at the time.

When Mexico rebelled against Spain in 1821, Costa Rica and the rest of Central America followed suit. Two years later, a faction in Costa Rica even opted to become part of Mexico, sparking a civil war in the country's center between four neighboring cities. After the republican cities of San Jose and Alajuela soundly defeated the pro-Mexican Heredia and Cartago, sovereignty was established.

Agustín I, Constitutional Emperor of Mexico

S&S, you can't expect Ticos to know their own history, or even bother to look it up rather than insulting you.

Iturbide’s coronation was held at the Mexico City Cathedral on 21 July 1822... As emperor, Iturbide had sovereignty over lands from Colombia to Oregon, including the current countries of Central America and the U.S. states of California, Texas, Arizona, Utah, Nevada, Colorado and New Mexico.

Santa Anna publicly announced his opposition to Iturbide in December 1822... In addition to [Santa Ana's] opposition to Emperor Agustín I within what is now Mexico, the area now known as Central America declared its opposition to Mexico City’s rule. In 1823, authorities in what are now El Salvador, Nicaragua, Costa Rica and down to Panama convened a Congress to declare themselves independent from Mexico.

Costa Rica could also celebrate its independence from Guatemala City.
Costa Rica became a state in the Federal Republic of Central America from 1823 to 1838. In 1838, long after the Central American Federation ceased to function in practice, Costa Rica formally withdrew and proclaimed itself sovereign. The distance from Guatemala City to the Central Valley of Costa Rica, where most of the population lived and still lives, was great. The local population had little allegiance to the government in Guatemala City, in part because of the history of isolation during Colonial times.

However, all of the Central American nations still celebrate September 15 as their independence day, which pertains to the independence of Central America from Spain.

Which is probably about all they teach in school. September 15, 1821. What is that exactly, the date on a letter?

Ticos can still thank Mexico for making that possible.

The Treaty of Córdoba gave Mexico independence from Spain, signed on August 24, 1821 in Córdoba, Veracruz, Mexico. The signatories were Mexican insurgent Agustín de Iturbide and, acting on behalf of the Spanish King Ferdinand VII, the last royal viceroy Juan de O'Donojú. Iturbide marched into Mexico City on 27 September 1821, his own birthday, with the Army of the Three Guarantees.

That's pretty fucking interesting actually... more so than the soccer rivalries. I wonder why Heredia supported Cartago.

Republican leader Gregorio Jose Ramirez moved the capital [from Cartago] to San José, because Cartago wanted to unite the newly independent province of Costa Rica to the Iturbide's Mexican Empire while San Jose and Alajuela supported a Republican system.
I suppose they do teach that, hard to miss the Capital city moving.
