OKLAHOMA CITY - Oklahoma City pharmacist now faces life in prison with the possibility of parole after being found guilty of murder for the death of a 16-year-old who tried to rob his store.

Confronted by two holdup men in May 2009, Ersland pulled out a gun, shot one of them in the head and chased the other away. The drugstore's security camera then filmed Ersland as he went behind the counter, got another gun, and pumped five more bullets into the wounded Antwun Parker as he lay on the floor.

The 59-year-old had been hailed as a hero for protecting two fellow employees.

The Ersland jury began deliberations around 1:00 p.m. Thursday and returned with a the guilty verdict around 4:30 p.m.

The verdict stunned the courtroom. Ersland, who many hailed as a hero, sat emotionless as the guilty verdict was read. People sitting behind him were noticeably upset.

Parker's mother and her sisters were inside the courtroom most of the trial, and burst out of the room when the verdict was read. They clung to each other and cried in the hallway in an outpouring of emotion.

Erlsand was led out of the courtroom in handcuffs with deputies surrounding him. The wife of the Reliable Pharmacy owner was seen crying as she left.

She was visibly stunned that the jury chose to find Ersland guilty of murder instead of the lesser charge of manslaughter.

Judge Ray Elliott refused to lift the gag order so the prosecution, the defense, and the jury are not allowed to comment on the verdict. But we do know the jury had asked to see the surveillance video of the robbery and shooting one more time before they went up to deliberate.

Ersland will be sentenced July 11, the same day Anthony Morrison and Emanuel Mitchell will be sentenced. Morrison and Mitchell were convicted of first-degree murder and conspiracy for planning the robbery at Reliable Pharmacy.

Since I live in OKC I can tell you there are two schools of thought on this whole deal. Some think this sends a message to store owners that you don't have a right to self defense. I do not agree. The other school of thought is that it was cold blooded murder when he returns, retrieves another gun (the first one jammed) and pumps more shots into the kid (the one who was unarmed) and that was over kill. I agree. Some thought it might not go to trial and without the video tape it might not have. The two adults who put the kids up to the robbery and furnished the gun are in prison as is the kid who got away in the video. I agree that the pharmacist was minding his own business and was taken by surprise and there were some women working there at that time also. He said he was protecting them. No question in my mind that the video did him in.

Pharmacist is a hero in my eyes, anything short of a walk is a mis justice.
If he got one day in jail, it's one day too many.
The guy saw him moving, he didn't know what could have happened next.

The pharmacist also followed the 14 year old outside and started randomly firing shots in his direction, witnesses testified that they could hear bullets "whizzing by them" and feared for their life. That's what disturbed me the most about this guy, randomly firing shots at a fleeing suspect when bystanders were around.

It sounds like this pharmacist could have handled things much better all around.

That said, manslaughter, maybe, and even that is a stretch. Murder..no way. I'm not sure what this jury was thinking.

he should not have pumped the kid with 5 more bullets while lying on the ground. If that caused the death, then the Pharmacist deserves to be found guilty (although manslaughter may be more appropriate, arguing that uncontrollable rage took him over)

but the irony is this, if the kid was mortally wounded after the first shot, and he may have been being shot in the head, then it's not murder

First degree is harsh. I really never understood the term overkill until this came up so close to home. I wish the wounded kid was in the video but apparently he was not moving. Some say he could have jumped up at any time. Well that kid did not have a gun, the other kid had it. If he jumped up it would have been caught on tape and the rest would have been justified. Maybe the pharmacist was in a semi panic mode but he looked very deliberate as he emptied his gun into that kid. I keep saying "that kid" only because he was 16, once he became involved in an armed robbery age was not a factor. I think manslaughter was more relevant because this whole incident was thrust upon the pharmacist
who did not wake up that morning contemplating a robbery much less a murder. He was at the wrong place at the wrong time and that should have been taken into consideration.

damning part was when he turned his back on the kid to reload...he obviously wasnt in danger at that point......i have no sympathy for the robber......but this was an overkill

He did not needs to kill him, but then again, the robber put him into that there state of mind. So, who really pulled the trigger? This is the conundrum imo!

Expecting an average law abiding citizen to act rationally while in a state of panic is unreasonable.

We expect law enforcement personnel to act rationally because that is their job. They are trained to keep their wits about them.

If I was a member of that jury it would have been hung.

That fell upon the responsibility of the defendant's lawyer who in this case revels in high profile cases. If he could not put one juror on there that could have hung that jury then he is not worth his salt. I think manslaughter was more
reasonable under the circumstances anyway.

(This has been around before but it's still good)

Are you a Liberal Democrat, a Republican, or a Southerner? Here is a little test that will help you decide. The answer can be found by posing the following question: You're walking down a deserted street with your wife and two small children.

Suddenly, a Terrorist with a huge knife comes around the corner, locks eyes with you, screams obscenities, raises the knife, and charges at you... You are carrying a Kimber 1911 cal. 45 ACP, and you are an expert shot. You have mere seconds before he reaches you and your family. What do you do? THINK CAREFULLY AND THEN SCROLL DOWN:

......................................Democrat's Answer:
* Well, that's not enough information to answer the question!
* What is a Kimber 1911 cal. 45 ACP?
* Does the man look poor or oppressed?
* Is he really a terrorist? Am I guilty of profiling?
* Have I ever done anything to him that would inspire him to attack?
* Could we run away?
* What does my wife think?
* What about the kids?
* Could I possibly swing the gun like a club and knock the knife out of his hand?
* What does the law say about this situation?
* Does the pistol have appropriate safety built into it?
* Why am I carrying a loaded gun anyway, and what kind of message does this send to society and to my children?
* Is it possible he'd be happy with just killing me?
* Does he definitely want to kill me, or would he be content just to wound me?
* If I were to grab his knees and hold on, could my family get away while he was stabbing me?
* Should I call 9-1-1?
* Why is this street so deserted?
* We need to raise taxes, have paint & weed day.
* Can we make this a happier, healthier street that would discourage such behavior.
* I need to debate this with some friends for a few days and try to come to a consensus.
* This is all so confusing! ............ ......... ......... ......... .........

......... ......... ......... .. Republican's Answer:

BANG! ............ ......... ......... ......... .........

........ ......... ...... ........Southerner's Answer:

BANG! BANG! BANG! BANG! BANG! BANG! BANG! BANG!
BANG ! BANG! BANG! BANG!
