TERRORISM: AL-ZARQAWI CALLS WOMEN TO JIHAD
Baghdad, 6 July (AKI) - The latest audio message, purporting to be from Jordanian militant leader Abu Musab al-Zarqawi, has called of Muslim women to play a more active role in the Jihad or Holy War. The one-hour-long speech, posted on Islamist Internet forums, is entitled 'Religion declines and I am still alive'. "What have you done for this nation?" asks al-Zarqawi referring to Muslim women, "don't you see that men get astride their horses and take up arms for the Jihad. Why do you not incite your husbands to fight in the Jihad against the infidels?".
"I make an appeal to the women of the Islamic nation in general and the Iraqi nation in particular, where are you in this Jihad?" .
The message confirms al-Qaeda's strategy of involving Muslim women in its terror activities, as first indicated nearly a year ago on an al-Qaeda-linked website, Al-Khansa, targeted at a female audience.
In his speech, al-Zarqawi frequently refer to religion and the rules of Jihad, which he says are modeled on the religious example the caliphate set up by the Prophet Mohammed's successor, Abu Bakr, and the ideological example of 12th century Syrian sheik, Ibn Taymiyya.
Within the first few minutes of the message, Al-Zarqawi make the first of many references to Iraq.
"This is a message for the enemy of Allah [US president George W.] Bush. In reality the God in which you believe is the God of Evil and the Christ that you are waiting for is none other than the Anti-Christ. The enemy is living a terrible moment in Iraq and even members of the US Congress recognise this".
The central part of the speech is dedicated to specific Iraqi issues, with references to the Sunni Ulema religious council in the Iraqi capital.
"They created the National Guard to bring about heresy [a reference to democracy] and support the crusaders in their fight against the mujadhadeen. Some of their Ulema have issued fatwas [religious edicts] in which they have forbidden killing them [the US-led coalition foces], defending their violation of sacred sites".
"We are living a full blown crisis that is affecting many Islamist groups. It is a crisis that divides us between a foreign foe and an enemy within," the message continued.
Only the final passage of the message offers some hint as to when it was recorded. In particular it quotes recent operations carried out by US soldiers in Iraq, such as Operation Lightning, which was started on 29 May, and Operation Sword which began last week.
There is also a mention of all the Saudi al-Qaeda leaders who have been killed, including Abdullah Al-Rushud, whose death was announced by al-Zarqawi through a statement issued several weeks ago.
