Fred Phelps, the guy that runs the organization, is certainly on the fringe of mainstream America. He did run for Govenor of Kansas as a Democrat but lost big-time; he held fundraisers for Al Gore back in the 80's before his agenda was publicized. All he has going for him now is a ton of his children running around making asses of themselves and the publicity that results from his un-PC picket signs. His credibilty is nil.
