I'm guessing the OP was referencing exit polling, not the same as the 3 day running polls being cited by doubters.
Having said that, the exit polling was very accurate in 2004.
This year, there may be a lot of unproven assumptions proved wrong on the scientific polling data. It is truly an unprecedented election, and polls make a leap of faith based on traditional data and extrapolation of such.
