Obama and the "Born Alive Infants Protection Act"
<HR style="COLOR: #e1dfdf; BACKGROUND-COLOR: #e1dfdf" SIZE=1><!-- / icon and title --><!-- message -->Why hasn't anyone talked more about how Obama voted NOT to protect infants that survived late-term abortions?

During debate about the "Born Alive Infants Protection Act", Congress heard testimony about babies who had survived late term abortion attempts. Nurses testified that these living, breathing babies were either being thrown into medical waste bins to die or they were killed outside the womb. Since these babies were completely separated from their mothers, there was no threat to the mother’s health. The act became federal law in 2002. Needing a law to protect living breathing infants bespeaks the moral bankruptcy some of our nation is in.

Identical language to that act was considered in a committee of the Illinois Senate. It was defeated with the committee’s chairman, Barack Obama, leading the opposition for the following reasons: the legislation could undermine Roe v. Wade (not true), babies who survive their abortions are not protected by the Equal Protection Clause of the Constitution (not true), and a ban to stop aborted babies from being shelved to die would be burdensome to their mothers. She alone should decide whether her baby lives or dies (uh, not true). Are you kidding me? If there weren't news articles about it, I would assume it was a hoax!

From one of the links below: [Obama said,] "I would have voted for the Born Alive Infant Protection Act in Illinois had it been worded the same as the federal bill. I think that’s the position the Democrats should take." There’s just one thing he forgot to mention: Obama had stopped his committee from adding the federal wording. With Obama no longer in the state Senate, the Born Alive legislation passed in 2005.

Here are some articles about it that give more detail:

Just curious how many late term abortions are performed in the US? I'm guessing it's about equal to the number of flags being burnt.

man didn't know there were that many abortions

based on the bottom 1997 in the US alone....1032/.008=129,000 total abortions on the year....pretty sad shit....

i'm not for enforcing at the federal level, think its a state issue and roe v. wade should be overturned

but on a personal level and whoever i talk to i take a pro life stance

  • Canada: During the year 2003, 6.5% of induced abortions were performed between 13 to 16 weeks, 2.2% between 17 to 20 weeks, and 0.8% over 20 weeks. This sample included procedures carried out in hospitals and clinics. [7]
  • England and Wales: In 2005, 9% of abortions occurred between 13 to 19 weeks, while 1% occurred at or over 20 weeks. [8]
  • New Zealand: In 2003, 2.03% of induced abortions were done between weeks 16 to 19, and 0.56% were done over 20 weeks. [9]
  • Norway: In 2005, 2.28% of induced abortions were performed between 13 to 16 weeks, 1.24% of abortions between 17 and 20 weeks, and 0.20% over 21 weeks. [10]
  • Scotland: In 2005, 6.1% of abortions were done between 14 to 17 weeks, while 1.6% were performed over 18 weeks. [11]
  • Sweden: In 2005, 5.6% of abortions were carried out between 12 and 17 weeks, and 0.8% at or greater than 18 weeks. [12]
  • United States: In 2003, from data collected in those areas that sufficiently reported gestational age, it was found that 6.2% of abortions were conducted from 13 to 15 weeks, 4.2% from 16 to 20 weeks, and 1.4% at or after 21 weeks. [13] Because the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention's annual study on abortion statistics does not calculate the exact gestational age for abortions performed past the 20th week, there is no exact data for the number of abortions performed after viability. [13] In 1997, the Guttmacher Institute estimated the number of abortions in the U.S. past 24 weeks to be 0.08%, or approximately 1,032 per year.[14]

You're right. Roe should be overturned, followed by a NEW federal law that properly acknowledges the inalienable rights of an unborn child.

Btw, how can you be against abortion but not support any laws prohibiting this disgusting activity? Isn't that a bit like saying your fav colour of clothing is orange, without actually owning anything orange in your wardrobe? :think2:

Sorry Markie, but you'll need more than Congress passing a law giving fetuses the rights of real live Human Beings.

Amend the United States Constitution making fetuses American citizens and you're home free.

Of course that would play havoc with congressional districting lines once we start adding in all those fetuses to population counts, but hey, as long as you're going insane, go all the way.
