NY Resolution...Learning a Language...Computer Language

Any programmers in here?
I have been wanting to learn Spanish for several years, but I've been too lazy. Now I have some time and decided to try and learn some coding with zero experience.

I was originally going to look at doing Python...I'm looking at taking Ruby on Rails (on sale for $10 instead of $300!)...thoughts?

Is this transferrable to creating an app? If not, which is the best app creating language?

I initially learned Python through codeacademy. Great courses and they're all free.

A year or so later I took a Master's level course in Python and I found it was pretty much all review from what I learned using codeacademy

I just paid for the Ruby on Rails...why did you initial take Python, how long did you spend on the course, was it helpful, and are you using it now?

Learned it for a few reasons. Wanted to boost the resume, wanted to understand more, was bored. I took the course over about a month - few hours here, few hours there. Yes it was helpful as far as learning the language. No I don't use it now (my company uses mostly C#), but I am still glad I learned it.
