North Korea and the US 'on a slide towards conflict'

We may get to see just how tough the U.S. really is.
It took half there entire military to deafeat a third world country that has no planes and a hanful of slingshots.

War in North Korea is now almost inevitable because of the country's diplomatic stalemate with America, a senior UN official claims.
Ahead of this week's crucial talks between members of the UN Security Council, Maurice Strong, special adviser to the Secretary General Kofi Annan, was gloomy on the chances of a peaceful settlement.

'I think war is unnecessary, it's unthinkable and unfortunately it's entirely possible,' he said.

Strong, who has just returned from a private mission for Annan in North Korea and is due to report to UN officials in New York tomorrow, said he felt both North Korea and America seemed to think they had time on their side but were both on a slide towards war.

On Wednesday the UN security council will hear America's demand for sanctions against North Korea, which it accuses of planning to develop nuclear weapons.

The Communist state has already said it would regard any such move as an 'act of war' and yesterday further warned that it would ignore any UN resolutions on the issue. It believes its dispute is solely with the US and wants direct talks with Washington - something the American government has refused to even consider.

'The nuclear issue on the Korean peninsula is not something that should be discussed at the United Nations,' said the state KCNA news agency in Pyongyang.

North Korea fervently believes it is next on America's list for pre-emptive strikes, says Strong. It takes George Bush's rhetoric in his 'axis of evil' speech as a very real threat to its national security. Washington says it seeks a diplomatic end, but has not ruled out a military solution.

'There is such a complete breakdown of trust and confidence between these two countries that they are now unable to read the intentions of the other so there is real potential now for this to escalate into conflict,' Strong said.

He said the North Koreans were prepared for war but 'anxious for peace'. The stand-off between the two nations first flared in October when US officials said North Korea had admitted having a secret nuclear programme in violation of a 1994 agreement. As punishment, Washington and its allies suspended promised oil shipments.

North Korea retaliated by taking steps to reactivate mothballed facilities capable of making nuclear bombs and withdrawing from the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty. It also deported UN monitors.

It claims it pulled out of the treaty because non-nuclear countries were supposed to be protected by nuclear powers like the US, not threatened.

Meanwhile, North Korea accused Japan yesterday of plotting a pre-emptive strike following recent calls from Tokyo to beef up the country's defence capabilities against the Communist nation.

Defence Minister Shigeru Ishiba said on Friday that Japan had a right to launch a strike on foreign soil if an attack is deemed imminent.

In the last two months Pyongyang has tested at least two short-range missiles. In 1998 it launched a ballistic missile over Japan's main island into the Pacific Ocean, showing that any target in Japan was within its range.

sure why not. I'm as in favour of a forceful regime change in the U.S. as many Americans are for one in Iraq.

I'm not in favor of war with NK, but the NK regime is probably more brutal to its people as Saddam's regime is/was. The difference is obvious -- NK has a tougher military and less oil. If Bush never intended on taking on NK (and Iran) then his 'axil of evil' proclamation was pure idiocy.

Then theyd be on their own, apart from the S Koreans.

The US has no real Allies left, except Israel.

NATO is a joke.
The UN is a waste of space.
Plus no major allies.
Who have you got in Africa?
Who have you got in Asia?
Who have you got in Europe?
Who have you got anywhere?

Who the hell is going to trust you??

Whatever happens, you're out on your own now.

Methinks the next phase is bridge building time.

The Iraqis couldnt blow their bridges.
But Uncle Sam blew almost every one he had.

A good indicator would be if there were changes in the US administration.
The only person left with any credibility is Powell.

And if HE goes, then the lunatics are definitely running the asylum.

Why do you say that?

North Korea doesn't really want a war, they just want the US to help them fix their economy. NK is piss poor, people are starving to death and the dictator needs help immediately. This is a way to get our attention.

They definitely don't want to pick a fight with us.

i wouldn`t bet on it....china`s getting pissed at n korea`s bluster....cut off some of their aid for a short period.....kim jung il was given the word to tone it down....and not surprisingly,we haven`t heard alot from n korea since the war started.....i suspect, that after iraq,we`ll get a shitpot load of help from most countries(i doubt that the u.n. drops the ball this time)....it`s not in china`s or russia`s best interests to let n. korea destabilize the area...russia and china will not allow n.korea to turn their backyard into a powder keg.... .....count on it

War with North Korea or not, US credibility is shot. What remains is simply governments that realize they cannot do without US investment and money.

The United States may be diplomaticaly stupid, but she sure isn't tactically stupid. If we felt it was necessary to attack North Korea, there would be a winning strategy put together for the war or there would be no war at all.

A president would have to be stupid to start another Vietnam. The public wouldn't stand for it, and this Iraq war was not Vietnam no matter how much the Saddam wanted it to be.

As much as I dislike the administration, I think they knew full well how relatively easy this would be. That doesn't make it right morally, but tactically it was brilliant execution. If there was any reasonable chance of this being Vietnam, Bush wouldn't have attacked. No sane president would have.

In the event North Korea threatens us, but looks too costly to invade? The political move would be wait it out, let them strike once. Get the public all riled up. If we got directly attacked by North Korea, the public wouldn't revolt over 10,000 military dead, which is way more than they'd stand for now.

I mean look at this Iraq war, the public generally supports it (70%), and a good half of the public thinks Iraqis were on the planes on 9-11. If Iraq had attacked us, you wouldn't see many protesters (or concern for civlians), and same with North Korea.

funk...don`t agree with every point, but, that was an objective, well thought out post....made me think.....well done.
