MORON!:finger: </TD></TR></TBODY></TABLE></TD></TR></TBODY></TABLE></TD></TR></TBODY></TABLE>NEW YORK (AP) -- In what could be a last-second breakthrough, both sides of the NHL lockout have given significant ground: The players' association will accept a salary cap, and the league has backed off its demand for a link between revenues and player costs.

Now they just have to figure out the money, and time has all but run out.

Even while the negotiations were going on, NHL commissioner Gary Bettman already had planned to announce the cancellation of the season Wednesday, a source close to the negotiations told The Associated Press on condition of anonymity Monday.

Bettman was slated to speak Wednesday in New York, but the NHL declined to give details beyond the time and location.

The NHL offered to give in on linkage, a ``significant move in the players' direction'' the union said early Tuesday following a meeting in Niagara Falls, N.Y. But when the players offered to accept a cap at $52 million in return -- the first time they came off their opposition to a ceiling on salaries -- the offer was rejected by the NHL. The league insisted on a salary cap that topped out at $40 million per team. ``It is indeed unfortunate that with the major steps taken by both sides we were unable to build enough momentum to reach an agreement,'' players' association senior director Ted Saskin said.

i dont know about these bone head athletes journey. i just dont know. i realize they want their money, i know that. but at some point you just have to say my sport isnt as popular as mlb, nfl, nba so im not going to get paid like them and swallow the pride.

this hurts the players way more than the owners. trust me when i say this. most of the owners are not turning a profit and merely keeping the team becuase they have a passion for the game and can afford to.

the owners are business men. the players just think they are becuase they have their hands on some loot. the owners know what it takes to make businesses thrive.

hockey got ugly when they sold advertising space to put on the ice. and now this lockout of a whole season. they may never recover from this.

in the mlb and nba lockouts the players got a lot of what they wanted becuase of the money coming in from the games popularity. if the nhl owners could give the players what they asked for, trust me theyd do it in a second. they understand money and number crunching, i put this all on the players.

apologize for the long post, but i feel strongly on this. and i miss hockey a lot more than i thought i would that is for sure.

This a league that doesn't even have a standard television contract. Doesn't the league split profits with NBC?

And these players don't want to accept a cap?

Didnt recent negotiations say the NHL wanted a cap at $42 mil? So now it is $40 mil? Nice, should make it clear Bettman's one and only goal was to bust the union and get replacements in next year. Players say ok $40 mil and Gary will say they redid the math and only works at 30. NHL doesn't want an agreement, they want a new union. They feel the game can't be much worse and eventually all the players will have to come back on owners terms.

Bingo.

Can't the NHL get a hockey guy to run their league - like Gretzky.

I say there's still a chance they play, not that I really give a rat's ass. They are still talking and the union is finally accepting reality (salary cap). All they have to do is agree on a figure. If they don't play at all (which would suit me fine) everybody loses.

Deal will get done. Players and union know, that if the season is cancelled now that the owners position gets even stronger going into next fall. Their best deal is NOW.... I put $$$ deal getting done and hockey being played this season..
