St. Joe’s -1 vs. <?xml:namespace prefix = st1 ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:smarttags" />South Carolina, 2 units
Greetings from NYC. Good timing for a biz trip as I plan to be in the Garden to watch this one in person Thurs. night. This game breaks down very similarly to the Joe-Memphis game Tuesday night. St. Joe’s is a tough team to play because their tempo will take teams out of their comfort zone and force shot selection discipline on their opponents. On the other end, Joe's offensive screening requires great defensive discipline and the ability to fight through screens for the full 35 seconds of every possession. Can SC play this kind of game? Can they be disciplined in their shot selection? Can they bust ass on defense to jump through screens to get out on shooters yet not leave the back door open or get confuzzled on down screens that leaves Jones wide open under the hoop? These were Memphis’ problems. Carroll is a great spot up shooter who only needs a microsecond to find his shot. And Joe’s screening results in a lot of wide open looks on the perimeter and in the paint. South Carolina is a team, like Memphis, that is at its best when they can play fast and when their opponents play fast with them. But when they’re forced to play a tempo game and shot selection becomes more critical and each possession is more valuable, SC hasn’t done as well. To wit: When SC has been held to under 70 points, the Gamecocks were just 5-12 ATS. Conversely, they were 9-4 ATS when scoring 70 or more. Do you think they’ll score 70 against a Joe team that has allowed 70 points just once in 2005 (to GW). (Joe allowed more than 70 three times in Nov-Dec). In fact, in its last 15 games, Joe has allowed only three opponents to score more than 60 points. If SC scores fewer than 70, the technicals get even more impressive. SC was a poor 1-7 ATS when scoring less than 65 points, and 0-2 ATS when scoring less than 60. This Joe team is very tough to prepare for. SC hasn’t really played anybody like them. I don’t think 48 hours is enough...and even if they had more time, instilling defensive discipline is a hard thing to coach into players the last week of March.

One final note: I very much respect other people on this site who are posting the other side of this one. This is in no way a fade against anybody or anything. I simply play em as I see em. Good luck all.

Well, I was all ready to put something substantial on USC until I read your post. But you dropped some stats on me that are causing me to reconsider. USC did seem a little too easy of a pick. Anytime that happens, there's gotta be a catch. You've seemed to find it. Now I'll probably lay off this game unless someone can convince me otherwise.

Nice write up here,,

To me St. Joe's is steady and most games you know what your are getting. SC has be known to bring the "Don't know how to play team at times"..
Good luck .. I am going to watch the first half and see if I see an edge before I play on this one just because of how SC doesn't show some nights,,

You might be the Minority on this forum, but 70% of the public is on St. Joes wich is usually not a good thing. I thin SC win this one Dave Odom is a good coach & has an excellent NIT record.

Thanks for your comments, Turtle. You are correct that being on the popular side isn't always a good thing.......but it's not always a bad thing either. Some games I believe betting factors are important (particularly those for which I can't find a right side fundamentally :)) But I capped this game on the fundamentals, not the betting aspects. More than one way to pick a winner. You are also correct that Odom is a decent coach and he does apparently get his kids fired up for the NIT. However, I would say the same about Martelli. Not sure I can give an edge to either coach or to either team's "wanting" to win this more than the other. Championship games of any kind are rarely about one team having more talent or heart....they're about matchups. Good luck to you.

I see most here on SC so that is what I was saying but it wont affect my opinion either way.Should be a good game. ST. Joes has been playing great defense and I like that factor in this game. GL!

Coast, I am reading alot of posts with people saying how SC wants to win this one so bad and how well they are playing, but the same goes for a St.Joes team that was a bubble team and did not get in the big dance. In addtion they are of course playing SOLID ball right now.Arguments can be made for both teams in this one but i do find it interesting that many people here are stating that SC is playing so well and want it so bad when both can be but into this category.Bottom line is at this point in the season and in any championship game both teams are hot and confident.!

There was a lot of comments before SC's last game about the terrible free throw shooting, have'nt seen any today. Just thought it was another factor that could come into play. Not sure what to do myself????????
