Finally!
Another typical boring uneventful day which has come to be known as the NHL Trade Deadline. All the chatter and gossip leading up to this day goes for not and the day itself flies by without a wimper. Sort of reminds me of many a Super Bowl gone by when all the hype and pageantry prior to the big game itself was nothing more than a waste of time and energy, climaxed by a snooze fest on the field. Rarely do we ever see any of the big so-called names mentioned as trade candidates leading up to the NHL trade deadline ever included or moved on that day itself. Of course the latest example turns out to be Panthers defenseman Jay Bouwmeester, who for the past week was rumoured to be going anywhere from Philaldelphia to Manhatten, but as usual the gossip went by without a sound. In all seriousness, this day in the world of sports without a doubt has to rank right up there with all sports days listed under the definition 'boring'. !<<)

Ivan's got a point boys. The problem with the deadline day is the great hype and expectations it creates while waiting for the day to get here. TSN starts it's programming at 5:00 am pst....NHL Network builds the day up for weeks and goes to special programming. It makes us all like kids crossing off the days till Christmas morning. Sometimes no matter how interesting and provocative the day turns out it falls short of our great expectations.

The current economic climate, teams already handcuffed with cap restraints, and a lack of sellers made today short of sensational. Don't get me wrong, as a hockey fan, it was a good day of entertainment, but not a day to remember. Free agent signing day, (July 1), has become a much more sexy day for big name movements that makes us say "wow"!

In today's NHL, Christmas morning comes in July.

Jdigs--how do feel about Upshall getting dealt? He sounded depressed earlier when HNIC radio interviewed him.

artie - i gotta be honest. i have no idea wat holmgren did today.

i mean why tinker with ur team if ur not making a move to get jaybo or pronger? i mean the full lineup played last night and beat boston and beat them good.

now today you go and deal upshall for a guy who is a 4th line player at best??

and then u get kyle mclaren who hasnt played in the nhl in a year?

i mean just totally baffled by the moves/lack thereof by the flyers.

there were a LOT of trades....but it was mostly garbage for garbage....its not the same since the salary cap era began......before the cap you would have fire sales....teams trading all stars ...blockbusters....for just draft picks...owners dumped salaries and the big teams, Detroit, Colorado, Rangers, Stars, Leafs etc....took on the salary...it just cant be done like that anymore...Im sorry, Ollie Jokkenin or Jordan Leopold doesnt get my blood flowing like when teams got a Chris Chelios or a Keith Tkachuck or Bill Guerin (In his prime) got traded for a bag of pucks and 2 hot dogs...that was the fun days....I agree this was not an exciting trade deadline day like in years passed.....it was boring!

Cheers

Say what you will about trade day, July 1, 2009 is guaranteed to be a monumental day in shaping next year's NHL. Look at this extensive list of UFAs. It is the largest field I can ever remember since the new CBA.

 Great post PTB!

I thought the same thing. With all the younger, cheaper tenders ready to make the jump you can be sure taking the NHL at +300 is not +EV!

Can really see guys like Tellqvist, Boucher, Johnson, Dennis, Weekes, Sanford, Sabourin, MacDonald heading to Russia for 700k-1mil. I don't see anyone getting more than half of what Emery got, especially considering the financial problems the league is trying to hide/fix. Outside chance at Khabibulin taking big money to go back, although he still seems like he could be a starter (40-50 games) for an NHL team, if he was motivated.
