Phil, quite a few bold predictions there and I salute you for your contrarian thinking. But why so low for the Sharks?

You said you ranked all the teams by four categories. In which one(s) did they fail so bad that it merited a ninth place finish?

good question VV. and to be honest i came close to backing down from SJ in 9th. i do have their d corps ranked 9th in the west and right now i have their coaching ranked low as he's a rookie. But, if i move their coach up one slot or two it does bump SJ into 8th so it's close.

with STL I like Andy Murray a lot and they have a real good looking D. Brewer, jackman, McKee, Erik Johnson, Woywitka, and maybe rooke Pietrangelo is very strong.

up front, they didn't make any free agents acquistions or trades but they will improve naturally as they've also got several young forwards like Berglund, Backes, Perron, McClement and Oshie. I like all those kids so I do think they will be close.

in retrospect i could easily have SJ in 8th but I'll stick with STL. the sharks have Thornton but afetr that there was a 41 point gap to the next highest scoring forward who was Michalek. they've got lots of grinders up fornt but do lack some scoring punch so in a toug west i don't think it's out the of the question that they miss out onthe post season

I'm can't reply on your Eastern Conference pics due to me not knowing it as good. So, that being said I cant see the Wild winning the NW and the oilers? Really, the Blue Jackets, no way there making the playoffs

I would take a long look at Chicago. If Havlat stays healthy, that team could have as much offensive firepower as anybody in the league. Add to that the best free agent defenseman on the market to go along with several young studs on the blueline, and you have a damn good hockey team.

I think San Jose and Phoenix are both better teams than Columbus, St Louis and Chicago. I think Chicago could get that 8th spot, but I can't see San Jose missing the playoffs because they should be within the top 5 spots. Phoenix could also go as high as the 4/5 slot this year if things go as they could. A lot of talent on that team.

I also can't see Buffalo winning their division. Ottawa, Montreal, and Boston are all better teams, and Toronto could easily finish higher than them as well. They have a decent team, but that won't cut it in that division.

Toronto's pretty thin up the middle. Teams can get decimated by injuries for sure, but even if Sundin returned, I doubt Toronto will be ahead of Ottawa and Boston.
