Spongebob is popular among adult gay men

</TD></TR></TBODY></TABLE><!-- E IIMA -->US conservative groups are up in arms over a music video featuring children's TV heroes such as the cheerful cartoon character SpongeBob SquarePants.

Focus on the Family and other groups say the video - a remake of the Sister Sledge hit, We Are Family - is a vehicle for pro-gay propaganda.

The video's makers plan to mail it to US schools in the spring to promote tolerance and diversity.

They say the attack is based on a misunderstanding.

The video also features children's favourites like Bob the Builder, along with characters from Sesame Street and The Muppet Show.

But James Dobson, founder of right-wing Christian group Focus on the Family, singled out SpongeBob at a black-tie dinner in Washington in the run-up to President Bush's inauguration, the New York Times said.

SpongeBob - who appears on the children's cable channel Nickelodeon - is seen as an icon for adult gay men in the US, apparently because he regularly holds hands with his sidekick Patrick.

His creators deny that he is gay, but he is not the first such character to cause controversy.

In 1999 conservatives claimed handbag-carrying Teletubby Tinky Winky, an import from the UK, was a bad role-model.

'Easy lesson'

Nile Rodgers, who wrote the song and is founder of the We Are Family Foundation (WAFF) which released the new video, says it is intended to help teach children the values of co-operation and unity.

"We believe that this is the essential first step to loving thy neighbour," he said. "And the fun and exciting format makes it a lesson that's easy for children to learn."

But conservatives say it sees the video as a cunning attempt to promote homosexuality.

They point to the fact that the WAFF is linked to a pledge being promoted by some liberal groups which includes a recognition of tolerance of sexual identity.

"We see the video as an insidious means by which the organisation is manipulating and potentially brainwashing kids," Paul Batura, a spokesman for Focus on the Family, told the New York Times.

Mr Rodgers said the groups may have confused his foundation with an unrelated organisation with a similar name that supports gay youth.

WAFF spokesman Mark Barondeso told the newspaper that anyone who thought the video promoted homosexuality "needs to visit their doctor and get their medication increased".

Why yes, why should tolerance be taught and personal freedoms be respected when there are fine organizations like the KKK or just plain ole' racist mom-n-dad there to help spread the bigotry, hatred, and phobic behaviors?

Can you picture it???!!!??

Oooohhhhhh, that Spongebob! So many orifices!"

People are born gay. To sweep it under the carpet is a cunning attempt to promote bigotry. What do heteros have to gain by suppressing homosexuality?

Nothing. That's what.

I saw a Black minister being interviewed about homosexuality today.
Reporter: "Do you think Mary Cheney was born gay"?
Minister: "No".
Reporter: "Do you think she just became gay"?
Minister: "No".
Is there another option that I don't know about, a gay virus maybe?

Redneck,
Clearly, everything "happens for a reason" and is "God's will."
The only explanation is that God WANTED Mary Cheney to lick cootchie.

Being gay is 100% choice and anyone who says you are BORN gay is simply making excuses for inappropriate behavior.

I have no problem if 2 men or 2 women want to have a relationship, but don't try to shove your lifestyle down my children's throats.

Keep your homosexual relationship behind closed doors where it belongs.

If you are born gay, then it should be easy to prove!!!

PROVE IT!!!!

My sister in law had many heterosexual relationships and she started hanging out with a bunch of man hating lesbians. I told my wife that she will bring home a girlfriend and sure enough my sister in law made that CHOICE.

Once again, any consenting adult should be able to make whatever CHOICES they wish but saying you're born gay is simply an excuse for abnormal behavior.

If you're born gay, then there would be some evidence as to physical proof of this but none exists.

Bible thumper,
There's no proof in God either.

I suppose this "clearly shows" that She doesn't exist, right (using "red" "illogic", of course)?

every gay person I've ever known said they can trace 'knowing' back to when they were a child. If they had heterosexual relationships before coming out, the choice was likely to follow societal norms, protect themselves from scorn of family and friends (and strangers, apparently) and to try to suppress internal feelings. This is what I know from what gay people themselves have said. I'm guessing you've never had a conversation -- an open-minded one, at least -- with a homosexual and are basing this on your own assumptions.

If one is born heterosexual, would it not follow that a homosexual was also born that way? The only choice a homosexual has in the matter is whether to act on it or to suppress it. I don't see how you can believe you live in a liberty-loving society if you insist that homosexuals suppress the biggest part of them.

Are you saying gays knew they were gay when they were children?

What age are we talking about here?

How many 7 year olds think about sex?

Once again, I have no problems with a person's choice to be homosexual but its something they should keep to themselves.

The problem with these Gay pride parades is it might encourage homosexual behavior and I simply don't think its healthy for our society.

Neither is Porn but I doubt you buy porn when you are checking out of a 7-11, do ya?

I live in Austin .. like one of the top 5 Gay centers in the country ... I never encounter homos (except if Bblight Coulter flies into town) and that lifestyle is just like drinking, gambling or doing coke ... to each his own and who are we to judge what is the "correct" lifestyle ...

Hell, your kid is gonna see 15,000 deaths on TV before they reach age 14 ...

If you note, I put the word 'knowing' in quotation marks precisely because 7-year-olds 'know' that they are homosexual as much as any 7-year-old 'knows' that they are heterosexual. Your sister-in-law didn't suddenly become a lesbian, she (likely slowly) decided to finally act on it.

Once again, I have no problems with a person's choice to be homosexual but its something they should keep to themselves.

How is gay behaviour detrimental to society? You should only suppress behaviours that legitimately harm others. I fail to see how my neighbour's choice of lovers has any repercussions in my life. If gay people bug you so much, don't look at them, don't talk to them, don't have dinner with them, don't attend their parades, don't answer the phone if they call. You have plenty of choices regarding your interaction with them. But telling them how to live their lives, when none of it affects you whatsoever is just plain arrogant.

You're right when you say you shouldn't be forced to hire blacks, or anyone you don't want to hire. That same sentiment in mind, gay people should not be forced back into the closet just because you don't like them. It's simply not your decision to make.

xpanda well put. this guy knows about as much about why someone is gay as he does anything else and that is zero. his sister in law became lesbian overnight only because she met a couple of people.

in one post he says nothing wrong with gay behavior in another it is a disgusting lifestyle being shoved down his throats,
