Wireless Access

Devices will allow ‘rambling and gambling’

The Nevada Senate last week approved and sent to Gov. Kenny Guinn for signing a bill that would authorize wireless gambling devices at licensed casinos.

The bill, Assembly Bill No. 471, was previously approved by the state Assembly by a unanimous 41-0 vote.

Once signed, the measure would permit Nevada casino patrons to gamble in public areas – bars, restaurants, poolside, etc. – via PDAs or other portable devices supplied by the casino.

PDAs or personal digital assistants are handheld computer devices that are connected to a mainframe system via microwave transmission.

Even though the governor is expected to sign the measure before the current legislation session ends in two weeks, it could be months or longer before the Nevada Gaming Commission adopts the regulations that would govern wireless gaming.

Although rules for their usage haven’t yet been formulated, the wireless gaming devices are expected to allow casino patrons to play the slots, roulette, poker and blackjack from casino locations such as restaurants, bars, poolside and other public areas, but not in guest rooms or off premises.

To ensure only legal adults could use the devices, a security system such as a retinal scanner or fingerprint reader would be programmed to allow only a registered user to operate the system.

When the casino customer finished his stay at the hotel, he would return the device to the casino.

Several companies lobbied for the legislation and will eventually seek licenses to market their products. One of them is Louisiana-based Diamond I Technologies, which has developed a PDA-based gambling system for casinos, cruise ships and racetracks.

Specifically, Diamond I Technologies is hawking its WiFiCasino Gaming System, which is being shopped at several Nevada casinos for possible field trial.

"WiFi" refers to "wireless fidelity," an industry standard for wireless equipment that meets FCC standards while operating in the 2.4 and 5.8 gigahertz radio spectra.

Diamond I’s system would allow casino customers to play slots, video poker and other electronic games via a PDA issued by the casino.

The system would also be capable of offering other services, such as Internet access, ordering meals and drinks, making show reservations or accessing concierge services.

I believe you misread, or are reading too much into this. All this is, is a tool for the casinos to keep their guests gambling no matter where they are while on the actual grounds of the casino. The device will have to be rented from the property itself and wont work outside of the property. What they mean by internet access is that the device they rent out will let you connect to the outside internet, not let the outside connect in.

Yea, I know you werent insinuating anything. I just wanted to make clear what the devices actually were, because the article wasnt as clear as it could have been.

I go back and forth with what will happen. Obviously I believe Vegas has a big say in what happens with internet gambling. A lot of money to lobby around congress. I think the whole online poker craze is actually a double-edged sword which both helps and hurts the situation, and heres why:

Vegas had been on a downward trend for awhile. With online sportsbooks/casinos taking a good market share, and Reservations taking another good part of the market share Vegas needed to do something. I really believed they were going to get pretty interested in Brick & Mortar online casinos to recoup some of that lost market share.

In comes online poker...

Gambling becomes more accepted in this country, I think it is hard to argue with that. There is a definite push for some kind of resolution or modification towards laws. The problem is, it is also generating so much new interest in gambling that Vegas has started to have record months again. Hopefully it is not too far away, but only time will tell.

I guess this is a rant of only semi-collected thoughts, so if you feel you wasted your time reading, sorry.

VegasMike--Good post and I think you are onto something with your thoughts.

You and Wild Bill would make a good team to share info about the coming (if it is that) situation in the US.

As usual with most of the gambling advances towards allowing easier access, progress is slowly creeping ahead.....

States will allow scratch cards and pickle cards and other scams that have horrible odds and allow the state to reap huge profits, but continue to force sports gambling or other activities in which a bettor actually has a chance of making money to the underground economy.....

Vegas sportsbooks might stand a chance if they were allowed to put up websites and take in a portion of the action going offshore.....for now just have to settle for sending money out of country until the moralists figure out that prohibition doesn't work and never did.

America: Land of the free!

Yeah, whatever.
