Cavaliers Insider: Wallace status uncertain after suffering arm lacerations in home accident

by Brian Windhorst/Plain Dealer Reporter Tuesday February 17, 2009, 7:10 PM

medium_wallacedunkjg.jpg
Joshua Gunter/The Plain DealerBen Wallace's status for Wednesday's game in Toronto won't be determined until close to game time after he required a second surgical procedure on Tuesday to remove glass from his right arm following an accident during the All-Star break.

CAVALIERS AT TORONTO RAPTORS
Tipoff: Wednesday, 7 p.m.
TV/radio: FSN-Ohio; WTAM AM/1100.
Notable: Chris Bosh (knee) is questionable, Kris Humphries (leg) is out, Jose Calderon (hamstring) and Joey Graham (shin) are probable for Toronto. ... Tarence Kinsey (ankle) and Ben Wallace (arm) are questionable and Delonte West (wrist) is doubtful for the Cavs. ... This will be the first game for Shawn Marion and Marcus Banks, traded to the Raptors from Miami last week. ... The Cavs have won four in a row against Toronto and are 2-0 this season with both games being played at The Q.
-- Brian Windhorst
CLEVELAND -- You won't see Ben Wallace making any commercials about playing for the Browns any time soon. The Cavaliers said the veteran forward suffered multiple lacerations on his right forearm from broken glass while playing catch with a football over All-Star Weekend in Richmond, Va. The team said Wallace needed 14 stitches in Richmond and then got another procedure to remove additional glass pieces Tuesday at the Cleveland Clinic.
Wallace did not practice with the team Tuesday as they re-assembled after the All-Star break. He did go on the trip with the team for Wednesday's game in Toronto and he's being listed as questionable. Despite the nature of the injury, he is not expected to miss much time.
Coach Mike Brown did not provide any details on how the injury occurred.

avaliers-Raptors Preview

By MIKE LIPKA,
STATS Writer

(AP) -- Both the Cleveland Cavaliers and Toronto Raptors have been mentioned as potential players in blockbuster trades before Thursday's deadline, but the teams have vastly different reasons for tweaking their rosters.

LeBron James' Cavaliers may just be looking for a final piece before they chase the franchise's first NBA championship, while the last-place Raptors are rumored to be considering shedding their top commodity.

The Raptors already made one major move, and Shawn Marion will make his Toronto debut Wednesday night when Cleveland crosses the border to open the second half for both clubs.

Led by a commitment to defense and their potential league MVP, the Cavs (40-11) are on pace for the best record in team history. Despite suffering back-to-back losses last week for the first time this season, they entered the All-Star break with a 109-92 home win over Phoenix on Wednesday.

Guard Mo Williams, acquired from Milwaukee in an offseason trade, had 44 points in that game, continuing his strong season as a secondary scoring option to James.

"He's phenomenal and showed why he's an All-Star," said James, who leads the league with 28.5 points per game while averaging 7.5 rebounds and 7.0 assists. "He showed why we have 40 wins before the All-Star break. He's probably the biggest reason."

Williams replaced injured Toronto forward Chris Bosh at Sunday's All-Star game, with the Eastern Conference coached by Cleveland's Mike Brown.

But Brown's team has been banged up lately, with Sasha Pavlovic and Delonte West remaining out with injuries and Ben Wallace a possibility to miss Wednesday's game after requiring 14 stitches to close a cut in his forearm over the break.

The Cavs were likely looking for potential reinforcements anyway as they jockey for position atop the East with Boston and Orlando.

The Los Angeles Clippers' Marcus Camby, Washington's Antawn Jamison and Phoenix's Amare Stoudemire are among the players reportedly discussed in trade talks, and whether or not they pick up any outside help, the Cavs are already looking ahead.

"The season really hasn't even started yet," James said. "For some teams it has, but for us, we have a long way to go."

The disappointing Raptors (21-34) are still within striking distance of playoff position in the East, and they won their final two games before the break - including a 91-89 victory over San Antonio.

But the postseason may be an afterthought, especially if they decide to deal Bosh this week. Toronto's leading scorer and rebounder has missed the last four games, along with the All-Star game, due to a sprained knee, and the Raptors are reportedly considering trading Bosh as they attempt to rebuild.

They already dealt center Jermaine O'Neal, forward Jamario Moon and a draft pick to Miami on Friday for Marion and Marcus Banks, both of whom should be in uniform Wednesday.

The Raptors plan to play an up-tempo style with Marion, who is also a strong defender who may be charged with the task of guarding James.

"It's a chance for Shawn to be a little bit more useful to his team," said Raptors general manager Bryan Colangelo, who drafted Marion in 1999 as Phoenix GM. "I don't think they were fully maximizing his potential down in Miami. That was maybe a system thing more than anything else. I think the system here will work in his favor."

While Bosh's status is uncertain, Toronto will also hope to have point guard Jose Calderon back in the lineup after the league leader in assist-to-turnover ratio and free throw shooting missed the final game before the break with a pesky hamstring problem.

Battling the injury, Calderon was 1-of-9 from the field for two points in the Raptors' 101-83 loss at Cleveland on Feb. 3. They've lost four straight to the Cavs dating back to last season.

<!-- /shared/ads/national/ntl3_additional.comp --> Rick Bonnell examines 10 Bobcats storylines, post-All Star break:

Settling in
The Bobcats have used 23 players, the most in the NBA this season. They're better after all the trades, but it's time to find out what they have over the final 30 games.
Health
Every team has injuries, but the Bobcats have been struck down in the core (Gerald Wallace, Raja Bell and D.J. Augustin). All three should be available today against Orlando, the first time that's happened in a month.
Is Rad the Man?
Vlade Radmanovic has had a great start, averaging 17 points on 54 percent shooting in his first two games. He'll get plenty of opportunity because the bench has been a weakness.
Will May play?
He got nine minutes in the past two games, which is nine minutes more than the previous 27 games. It would cost the Bobcats $3.67million to restrict his free agency this summer.
Playoff race?
At 21-31, they're tied with New York for 11th in the East, 31/2 games behind Milwaukee for the last playoff spot. However, they've used up 29 of 41 home games.
Open roster spot
They're one short of the maximum 15 roster spots, and coach Larry Brown wants a big guard, preferably a veteran who could play both point and shooting guard. In other words, the next Aaron McKie.
Expensive backup centers
The Bobcats owe Gana Diop about $19.5million over the next three seasons and Nazr Mohammed about $13.3million over the next two. Gotta do something about that.
Diamond in the rough?
Cartier Martin has played well for a D-league call-up. They must decide soon whether to sign him for the rest of the season.
French connection
Boris Diaw worked out great. The other Frenchman, Alexis Ajinca, is about 30 pounds of muscle away from the rotation. But they knew he was a project.
Last, not least
Managing Raymond Felton's impending free agency could be a big story this season and next.

Magic-Hornets Preview
By DAN PIERINGER,
STATS Writer
(AP) -- Dwight Howard delivered a huge performance in the Orlando Magic's first game back from the All-Star break. He'll try for another against a New Orleans Hornets team that just traded its defensive anchor.
After moving Tyson Chandler, the Hornets hope to have enough interior defense to counter Howard and the Southeast Division-leading Magic when the clubs meet on Wednesday night in New Orleans.
Chandler, sidelined for New Orleans' last 12 games before the All-Star break with an ankle injury, was dealt to Oklahoma City on Tuesday. The trade brought veteran power forwards Joe Smith and Chris Wilcox to New Orleans and should give the team some salary cap room next season, but it could weaken the Hornets inside for the remainder of this season.
"It just leaves a big question mark in the middle. I think we were all kind of looking forward to him getting back healthy and plugging that middle up for us. Now we just don't know," All-Star forward David West said. "We hope that these guys coming in can come in and provide some presence."
It's unclear if Smith or Wilcox will be with the Hornets (31-20) on Wednesday, but they could certainly use them to try to stop Howard, who's coming off a career game in a 107-102 overtime win over Charlotte on Tuesday.
The All-Star center had a career-high 45 points on 16-of-23 shooting from the field with 19 rebounds and eight blocked shots and helped Orlando (39-13) rally from a seven-point, third-quarter deficit.
"Dwight was unbelievable, unbelievable," Magic coach Stan Van Gundy said. "I mean phenomenal. He just put us on his back. That's leadership right there, that kind of play on the floor. It kept everyone else motivated."
Van Gundy's club split its last 10 games before All-Star weekend, and Howard appeared determined to start the second half strong.
"We really needed this game off the break," he said. "When my teammates see me bringing it at both ends every night, they will do the same. I have to start everything at both ends."
While Howard was dominant, New Orleans looked vulnerable inside in a 100-98 road win over Oklahoma City. The Hornets gave up a career-high 47 points to forward Kevin Durant and 24 to forward Jeff Green.
The Hornets, holding opponents to 36.0 points in the paint per game before Tuesday, gave up 46 to the Thunder. Despite that weakness in the post, New Orleans pulled out the victory on Chris Paul's runner with 2.7 seconds remaining.
"(Paul) did a great job of running the clock down so (the Thunder) didn't have a whole lot of time," coach Byron Scott said. "Again, it was a situation probably that we shouldn't have been in. You know, if we did a better job defensively we could have put this game away a lot earlier."
Orlando was the dominant defensive team in these clubs' highly anticipated first meeting on Christmas. The Magic held the Hornets to their lowest point total and their second-lowest field-goal percentage (33.3) of the season in an 88-68 home victory.
Paul, an All-Star, had 12 points and four assists while shooting 5-for-14 in that game.
Partially because of Chandler's physical presence inside, Howard was limited to 12 points and 4-for-15 shooting. The Magic, though, had four other players scored in double figures, including Hedo Turkoglu, who had 20 with six rebounds and five assists.
Orlando is 11-2 on the road against Western Conference opponents this season.

Bulls-Bucks Preview
By MATT BECKER, STATS Senior Writer
Posted Feb 18 2009 2:25AM

The Chicago Bulls didn't have a player compete in Sunday's All-Star game, but they still generated a lot of news during the break.
The Bulls look to put aside trade rumors and reports of their general manager stepping down Wednesday night with a strong effort against the Milwaukee Bucks, one of the teams they're chasing for a playoff spot.
While Chicago (23-30) didn't have lofty expectations this season, many believed they could be competitive after selecting Derrick Rose first overall in the draft. For most of the first half of the season, though, the Bulls struggled.
General manager John Paxson has been criticized for the team's performance and on Friday, a published report said he would step down - something the team has denied. First-year coach Vinny Del Negro said he spoke to Paxson over the weekend and they joked about the rumors. Del Negro also said he expects Paxson to stay on the job for the rest of the season.
Power forward Tyrus Thomas, who is averaging 17.8 points and 10.6 rebounds in five games this month, has also been the focus of several trade rumors. With the deadline looming on Thursday, his name has been mentioned in potential deals with Phoenix and Toronto.
"You have to ask them," he said as he pointed toward the team's offices at the Bulls' practice facility Tuesday. "I don't control anything."
Despite all the off-the-court issues, Chicago is within striking distance of a playoff berth. The Bulls are 10th in the Eastern Conference, 2 1/2 games back of the eighth-place Bucks (27-29).
Chicago lost to Miami 95-93 on Thursday, but still won five of eight games prior to the break.
"I think we are playing better. But we definitely got room to improve," said Ben Gordon, who scored 34 and averaged 28.7 points - 8.3 points better than his team-leading average - in his final four games heading into All-Star weekend.
Rose, who won the Skills Challenge on Saturday, also went into the break playing some of his best basketball this season as he averaged 20.3 points on 56.0 percent shooting in his last six games.
In his pro debut on Oct. 28, Rose had 11 points to help the Bulls to a 108-95 win, spoiling Bucks coach Scott Skiles' return to the United Center. On Dec. 3 in Milwaukee, Rose finished with 18 in a 97-90 loss.
He also had nine assists in each of those contests and leads all rookies with 6.3 per game.
The Bucks came out of the break Tuesday with an impressive 92-86 win at Detroit to pull within two games of the second-place Pistons in the Central Division.
Milwaukee has won three straight and improved to 5-4 since leading scorer Michael Redd's season-ending left knee injury.
"We are looking at it like - why try and stay in the spot that you're in? Why not try and move up in the playoffs? Why not try to get above .500?" said Richard Jefferson, who scored 29 points. "These are our goals that we've had all season just because of injuries and some inconsistency we haven't been able to do it but those are still our final goals."
Jefferson has been carrying the Bucks' offense this month, averaging 25.8 points - 7.8 points above his season average - through five games. He's also shot 71.4 percent (15-of-21) from 3-point range.
Milwaukee, which is opening a three-game homestand, has been tough to slow down at the Bradley Center lately. The Bucks are averaging 119.3 points on 51.9 percent shooting in their last four games there, winning three.

Wednesday vs. the Denver Nuggets: Okay, as much as I think this could be a victory, I think it's going to be tough on a back-to-back to beat the Nuggets. Especially since Chauncey Billups is Chauncey Billups. Here's my X-Factor in this game: Denver's J.R. Smith. He's inconsistent, and in the Sixers loss at Denver, he was really effective -- went off for almost 20 points in the first half. If he has one of his non-existent games, the Sixers will win. Still, I'm putting this as a loss, making the Sixers 28-25. (This is not scientific, nor do I expect everyone to agree.)

It's difficult to figure why the Nets (24-29 entering Tuesday) aren't better. Beyond that, however, it gets thin quickly with Yi Jianlian the only other double-figure scorer. ... This team does not defend well, particularly on the perimeter, where opponents shoot 39.6 percent from 3-point range.

Word out of San Antonio is that Manu might be out for the year. Don't know if it's true, but this could be a BIG blow for the Spurs.
