This year's National Championship is between two teams that were disappointed by the results of LY's Sugar Bowl, USC for not being in it and Oklahoma for losing it to LSU 21-14. The Trojans did get some satisfaction as after their Rose Bowl win over Michigan they won the AP Poll and were Co-National Champs. USC and Oklahoma went wire-to-wire as #1 & 2 for the first time in the AP Poll's history. USC leads the series 5-2-1 SU all-time (3-0 ATS) with the last meeting coming in '92. Trojans HC Pete Carroll in his 1st year back was 6-5 SU & ATS but dropped their 2001 Las Vegas Bowl matchup to Utah 10-6. Since then USC has gotten better each year going 10-2, 11-1 and 12-0 TY with dominating bowl wins in the 2002 Orange Bowl (38-17 over Iowa) and LY's Rose Bowl (28-14). OU Co-DC Bo Pelini served as a Carroll assistant for 5 years in the NFL while the Sooners former-DC Mike Stoops is the headman at Arizona and will certainly give his brother all the film and help that he can (USC beat UA 49-9). Oklahoma has won 7 National Titles with their most recent coming the last time they played in Miami in the 2000-'01 Orange Bowl, a 13-2 upset of Florida St as 10 pt dogs. OU is 12-5 SU all-time in the Orange Bowl. Stoops is 3-2 SU (2-3 ATS) in bowls and is 12-2 SU all-time vs Top 10 teams. USC played the tougher schedule (#13-22). In games against bowl teams this year both teams were 6-0 SU but only 2-4 ATS. USC outscored those foes 32-15 and outgained them 401-320. The Sooners outscored them 34-18 and outgained them by a wider margin 450-304. Both teams have only been a single digit fav once TY with USC getting a non-covering 23-17 win (-7) over Cal (a game in which they were outgained 424-205!!), while OU covered against Texas 12-0 (-7) as a 4H Key Selection on these pages. Both teams play on grass so no advantage to either team. The Trojans have 8 seniors with 14 total upperclassmen starters. OU is a senior dominated team with 13 overall starters and 18 upperclassmen. This will be the first time the Sooners have been a dog since 2002 but they have gone 9-2 ATS in that role with 8 outright upsets including their last visit to the Orange Bowl.

USC has the NCAA's leader in all-purpose yds Reggie Bush (PS#5, Heisman finalist) who totalled 2,181 yds TY. OC Norm Chow likes to move Bush around to create mismatches and he finished 2nd on the team in rushing (833 yds, 6.1) and receiving (478 yds, 11.7) with 13 TD's. Heisman Winner QB Matt Leinart (PS#9) made the offense go avg 249 ypg (67%) with a 28-6 ratio (#9 NCAA pass eff). LenDale White was the leading rusher with 985 yds (5.2) and 15 total TD's (13 rush). They had hoped to get WR Mike Williams back after his failed bid to enter the NFL draft but the NCAA ruled him ineligible. Steve Smith (PS#3) stepped in but was injured mid-season although he did return at the end and will start here (#3 w/35 rec, 15.6). True Fr Dwayne Jarrett (PS#4) led the team with 50 rec (14.7) and 12 TD's. TE's Dominique Byrd & Alex Holmes (PS#3 & #5) combined for 58 rec (9.8). The OL has gone thru growing pains TY as they only have one senior starter, LG John Drake on the unit. Drake (350 lbs) and RT Taitusi Lutui (370 lbs) are the largest USC linemen in history. The rest of the line is made up of youngsters and overall the line avg 6-4 317 lbs. They allowed 24 sacks (6.1%) with an impressive 4.5 ypc TY and USC finished with our #5 offense. The defensive front seven is solid and quick, led in the middle by DT Shaun Cody (9 sks, 40 tkls), NT Mike Patterson (6 sks, 10 tfl, 42 tkls), and MLB Lofa Tatupu (#1 tklr 92, 5.5 sks & 7 tfl, 8 pbu, 3 int) with all 3 being 1st Tm Pac 10 members. Overall the DL had 27.5 of the team's 48 sks. DT Manuel Wright is a key member of the rotation who missed the last couple of games but is expected to return here. The secondary has a bunch of solid tacklers with good coverage skills which is why they finished with our #1 pass efficiency defense. SS Darnell Bing (53 tkls, 6 pbu, 2 int), FS Jason Leach (44 tkls, 4 pbu, 2 int) and CB's Justin Wyatt (39 tkls, 5 pbu, 1 int), Kevin Arbet (26 tkls, 2 pbu, 1 int) and Eric Wright (29 tkls, 6 pbu, 1 int) comprise the unit. USC held opponents to just 196 ypg (53%) with an outstanding 11-19 ratio in the pass-happy Pac 10. Overall USC has our #2 defense.

After dominating their 12 regular season games in '03 by an avg 48-13 margin, many in the media crowned the Sooners as "the greatest college football team of all-time." OU then got run over 35-7 by Kansas St in the title game as KSU was the one team who exploited OU's glaring weakness - its lack of a physical running game. Due to their substantial lead in the BCS system, OU still made the Sugar Bowl at the expense of USC where they again were out-toughed in the trenches. OU avg'd just 67 rush ypg (2.2) in their L/4 games LY and Stoops knew that the top offseason priority was to upgrade the running game to take the pressure off Heisman Winning QB Jason White (Heisman finalist TY). Stoops immediately signed PS#1 RB Adrian Peterson and the rest is history as "AD" (All-Day) had one of the finest freshman campaigns in NCAA history. Peterson (Heisman finalist) bulled his way to 1,843 yds (5.9) despite splitting time early in the year with Kejuan Jones (504, 4.0). With LB's now having to genuinely respect play fakes, Jason White was sk'd just 7 times all year (16 in L/4 of '03) and he was able to remain healthy all season for the first time in his 6 year career. White had another terrific season avg 247 ypg (65%) with a 33-6 ratio. Mark Clayton had fewer opportunities but still hauled in 62 rec (13.8) with 8 TD's. Travis Wilson (43 rec, 14.0, 9 TD) and Mark Bradley (21, 20.2, 7) also are quality playmakers. The OL is anchored by Outland Winner OT Jammal Brown and Rimington finalist C Vince Carter. OU finished with our #4 offense. OU's defense (#1) remained the team's solid backbone with the DL leading the way. Dan Cody (1st Tm Big 12, 9 sks, 6 tfl), Jonathan Jackson (1st Tm Big 12, 8 sks) and Larry Birdine (7 sks) gave OU what Stoops hailed as its best DE play ever. The DT position was thin after the departure of preseason AA candidate Dusty Dvoracek but they were able to piece together a quality 3 man rotation. OU allowed just 86 rush ypg (2.8) with 38 sks. Lance Mitchell (72 tkls, 10 tfl) returned from an ACL injury to lead the LB corps. The secondary allowed just 194 ypg (55%) with a 10-8 ratio to rank #20 in pass eff D despite playing without top cover CB Antonio Perkins for a number of games. After the backups were burned for several long passes vs Okla St and A&M, Stoops burned Marcus Walker's (PS#2) redshirt. With Walker in the lineup and the return of Perkins, OU allowed just 84 ypg (49%) with a 0-2 ratio L/3 games. The Sooners have one of the finest safety combinations around in FS Brodney Pool (85 tkls, 9 pbu) and SS Donte Nicholson (66, 6).

For USC AA Reggie Bush is a dangerous returnman avg 26.4 on KR's (#10 NCAA) and 16.0 on PR's (#9 NCAA) with 2 TD's. They have a top flight punter in Tom Malone who LY would have finished #1 in the NCAA in avg but did not have enough attempts. This year he was 10th with a 43.8 avg and a team net 42.4 with 17 inside the 20. PK Ryan Killeen struggled this season only hitting 14-23 (4-9 40+) with a long of 42 but looked to have regained his confidence hitting 5 of 5 (USC record) FG's against UCLA. The Trojans finished #24 in our special teams rankings (#32 incl K) due to the below avg coverage units that allowed 21.4 on KR's and 9.5 on PR's with 2 of their punts blocked. OU ranked #18 in special teams (#45 incl K) headed by their terrific coverage units as they allowed just 15.7 on KR's and 4.2 on PR's. PR Antonio Perkins (9.2) tied the NCAA career record with 8 PR TD's but missed most of the season due to an inj. KR Mark Bradley avg'd just 18.4. P Blake Ferguson avg'd 41.8 with a 39.1 net but did drop 2 snaps which led to opp's TD's. K Trey DiCarlo struggled so badly (8-16 with L/35) that Stoops pulled the RS off of true frosh Garrett Hartley in the 11th game of the season. Hartley hasn't att'd a FG yet but is 10-10 on PAT's.

Having the top 4 Heisman Trophy vote getters on hand, along with the teams having our #4 & #5 offenses and #1 & #2 defenses, these are CLEARLY the best two teams in the NCAA and this is a TRUE National Title game. At the start of the year we called for this matchup in the Orange Bowl and called Oklahoma the best team in the country (only 1 of 2 magazines to pick the Sooners #1). Now that their D is healthy they are the best team in the country and Stoops will have his team well motivated for this. USC has looked beatable many times this year (Virg Tech, Stanford, Cal, Ore St, UCLA) and this is by FAR the best team they will face this year. We feel the Sooners should be favored (see checklist, page 29).

Maxx picks Orange Bowl Breakdown

Quarterbacks

Jason White has been waiting one year for this game and should be very motivated to win after coming very close in last season’s title game. Matt Leinart is having a great season and wants to win another national championship but will have the burden of being a marked man after winning the Heisman Trophy. The key in this game will be which QB performs better and we have to give the nod to the Sooners leader. Jason White is a 6th year senior who came back specifically to win a national title and is much more mature than his counterpart. Advantage – Oklahoma

Offense

USC runs a very high-powered offense led by running backs Lendal White and Reggie Bush. Bush is one of the top backs in college football but heavily relies on White to clear up space for him. True freshman Dwayne Jarrett is the team’s top receiving threat and creates mismatches with his size. Steve Smith is another talented player that brings maturity to the lineup after missing the first 5 games with a broken leg.

Oklahoma running back Adrian Peterson is the best running back in America and could become on the best ever after rushing for over 1800 yards as a freshman. Backup runner Kejuan Jones is a very talented player who would start on most other teams and can provide a boost for the offense. Senior Mark Clayton is one of the best receivers in America and will not allow teams to crowd the line waiting for Peterson. Travis Wilson has over 600 receiving yards and is a dangerous deep threat. Fullback J.D. Runnels is a bruising blocker that can run the ball if needed. Advantage – Oklahoma

Defense

The Sooners defense is led by defensive end Dan Cody who is arguably the best at his position in all of college football. Lance Mitchell leads a strong group of linebackers who gets help from big play DE Larry Birdine. Senior Antonio Perkins is the Sooners best cover corner while FS Brodney Pool is one of the best in America.

USC relies heavily on Linebackers Lofa Tatupu and Matt Grootegoed to make up for a talented but inexperienced secondary. The defensive front is one of the best in America led by All American DT Shaun Cody who simply blows by opponents with his mobility. Advantage – Even

Coaching

Oklahoma head coach Bob Stoops is simply outstanding at competing for a national championship every year. He is a workaholic who has led his program to 3 national title games in 5 years. He has been very intent on winning it all this year after getting coming up short a year ago. USC head coach Pete Carroll is a fantastic recruiter who has built USC into a rising power on the national scene but we have to give the edge to the Sooners. Bob Stoops has more title game experience and is determined to not let anyone out coach him after losing to LSU last year in the title game. Advantage – Oklahoma

Intangibles

Key Injuries – USC Running Back Lendale White is still not 100% after recovering from a high ankle sprain in the season finale against UCLA. It is very crucial for USC that he can play because without him they will not be able to mix up their offense and all the defensive focus will turn to Reggie Bush.
Heisman Hype – Matt Leinart is this year’s lucky winner and will have a huge target on his back especially after beating Sooners Jason White and Adrian Peterson. All the press that comes with the award can be draining and take attention off the title game.
Motivation – Oklahoma has every reason in the world to want to win this game after losing to LSU last year in the title game. They have worked all year on one goal and that was to get redemption by winning a national title. Southern Cal has already won a share of the title last year and may not be as hungry to win another one. Advantage – Oklahoma

Final Analysis

Oklahoma is the better team on paper and should have an advantage playing in Florida where they won the national championship 5 years ago. The biggest key will be if USC can stop Adrian Peterson from having a huge game. We think Oklahoma is the more physical team and will have a huge advantage with their offensive line that will allow Peterson to have a huge game. Look for the Sooners to come out fired up and win this game by double digits.

Dr Bob - Orange Bowl

<!-- / icon and title --><!-- message -->Orange Bowl - Jan 4
USC (-3.0) 24 Oklahoma 20
I have considered USC to be considerably better than Oklahoma for most of this season, but the Sooners upgraded their defense when the took the red shirt off highly touted freshman CB Marcus Walker during their near upset loss to Texas A&M, replacing the secondary’s weak link, Eric Bassey, who is now the nickel back. Walker, and the return to healthy of Antonio Perkins gives the Sooners two shutdown cornerbacks to go along with two great safeties and Oklahoma’s defense allowed only 61 passing yards at 2.5 yards per pass play in 3 games with Walker starting opposite of Perkins (who missed their game against Oklahoma State in which they gave up 8.7 yppp). Granted, shutting down Nebraska, Baylor and Colorado, who would combine to average just 5.8 yppp against an average defense is not clear cut evidence that Oklahoma now has an impenetrable pass defense, but it is enough evidence to suggest that they are even better than their very good season rating of 1.5 yppp better than average. I can go as far as to now rate the Sooners at 2.1 yppp better than average against the pass, but they could be even better than that. That’s still not as good as a USC pass defense that allowed just 4.4 yppp this season despite facing a schedule loaded with good passing teams that would combine to average 7.0 yppp against an average defense. Oklahoma does defend the run better than the Trojans, as the Sooners would allow just 3.6 yards per rushing play to an average offense while USC would allow 3.8 yprp. Overall, I rate USC’s defense as 0.1 yards per play better than Oklahoma’s defense now that the Sooners have improved their pass defense. USC also has a 0.1 yppl advantage offensively, but that’s just because the Sooners run the ball more. These teams are incredibly similar offensively, as USC’s compensated run average is 5.57 yprp while Oklahoma’s is 5.52. The pass attacks, with Leinart and White in the game, rate at 8.20 yppp for the Trojans and 8.30 yppp for Oklahoma. With the offenses and defenses so equal, this game will probably come down to special teams and turnovers, of which USC has the advantage in both counts. Both teams have good kick returners, especially now that Perkins is healthy again for Oklahoma, but Reggie Bush rates and edge in that regard and USC’s bad kicker (-0.5 points per game) is actually better than Oklahoma’s bad kicker, who rates at -1.2 points per game and made just 2 of 10 kicks from 30 yards or longer. Overall, the Trojans have a 1.1 points edge in special teams and a 1.3 points edge in projected turnovers, and my math model favors USC by 3.3 points (and 47.7 total points) after making the proper adjustments (most notably for Oklahoma’s improved secondary).

That model uses all games, but I also like to do a profile analysis in games like this, to see how each team played against teams of similar caliber. USC’s offense rates at 1.4 yppl better than average, but the Trojans were just 1.0 yppl better than average against the 3 very good defensive teams that they faced this season, averaging 5.3 yppl against Virginia Tech, Cal, and Oregon State (who would combine to allow 4.3 yppl to an average offense). Oklahoma’s defense, meanwhile, played all of their good offensive opponent’s before Walker was inserted into the starting lineup, so I’ll use those games to compare their overall defense to their defense in games against good offensive teams. Prior to Walker, the Sooners’ defense was 1.1 yppl better than average and they were also 1.1 yppl better than average against the 5 good offensive teams that they faced, allowing 5.3 yppl to Bowling Green, Oklahoma State, Texas Tech, Texas, and Texas A&M (who would combine to average 6.4 yppl against an average defense. The net of all of that analysis suggests the USC would perform at 0.4 yppl worse offensively if both teams perform at the level they played at against teams with similar offensive/defensive credentials as what they are facing in this game.

Oklahoma’s offense didn’t face a defense anywhere close to the level of USC, but they averaged only 5.6 yppl against the best 3 defensive teams that they faced this season – Texas A&M, Texas, and Texas Tech (who would combine to allow 4.6 yppp to an average offense). So, the Sooners’ attack, which is 1.3 yppl better than average for the season, was only 1.0 yppl better than average against very good defensive teams. USC’s defense, which was great in general (1.7 yppl better than average), was even better against very good offensive teams, limiting Cal, Arizona State, and UCLA to a combined 4.8 yppl – which is 2.1 yppl less than the 6.9 yppl that those explosive offensive teams would combine for against an average defensive team. The difference between the overall ratings and the ratings against similarly good competition is 0.7 yppl in favor of USC’s defense, and the Trojans would be favored by 5 ½ points with a total of 41 ½ points using the profile analysis.

There are situations favoring both sides in this game, so I’ll call for a predicted score that’s between the math using all games and the profile analysis. Thus, I have no opinion on the side (USC’s chance of covering at -3 is less than the 52.3% break-even point), but I will consider the Under a Strong Opinion since both defenses have an edge over their offensive counterparts and both teams had a tendency to play lower scoring games against quality competition. USC played 4 games against teams that were good on both offense and defense and they averaged only 44 points in those games against Virginia Tech, Cal, Arizona State, and Oregon State. Oklahoma, meanwhile, played 4 games against teams that were better than average on both offense and defense and they averaged a total of just 42 points in those games against Oregon, Texas Tech, Texas, and Texas A&M. And, games against the best overall team each team faced went well under the total, as USC-Cal totaled just 40 points and went Under the 57 ½ point total and Oklahoma-Texas was a 12-0 final score in a game in which the total was 53 ½ points.

NCAAF: Southern California Trojans at Oklahoma Sooners - Oklahoma +3 -110
Game Date: 1/4/2005
Note: We are certainly happy that we got on this one early 3 weeks ago. There are a number of reasons why we like the Sooners in this game. Sooner failed miserably last year with LSU and we have got to feel it was huge learning experience. Being to the Big Dance last year will help them with all of the hoopla that follows an event like this. One of the key reasons is the high ankle injury to USC power runner LenDale White. White is critical to USC since the loss of 3rd string RB Davis. White will play but there is no way he is even close to 100% and he is a big cog in the Trojan Offense. The other key is the strength of schedule. USC was outgained and outplayed by Cal this year, but as we found out late in the season, Cal was not the team everyone thought they were. The fact is, there is lot's of hype about how good the Pac 10 is, but the fact is, they are not. USC has not seen a Defense like Oklahoma this year and they will not be able to throw the ball at will. We actually look for some pretty large mistakes from the Heisman Trophy Winner himself. Guess what Leinart? This ain't Stanford!
