So I am moving to CR. after I clear up some paperwork here in the states and I just had this overwhelming thought that I might be bored outta my mind. Other than sports, my entertainment all centers around my friends and family. So until I meet some people with similar interests, I think I will just have to hang at the sports bars and see what happens.

Any thoughts from those of you who made the move by yourself?

Lot of Americans and different groups down here. You will not have a problem making friends. Go to the Time Out Tavern.

Dont take either one of these guys advice and move to Tilaran or Ciudad Colon and avoid the whole coke, gringo, and hooker scene because if you arent prepared for it you are gonna get yourself fucked up son.

Ok fine, if you want some real advice.... Go to Bagelmans in Escazu or Guachipelin. Another spot is Il Panino (usually only good on weekends). Go to the Gym, lots of people go to Fitmoso in Sabana Sur or World Gym in Escazu. MultiPlaza is probably the best place to shop for clothes and crap and who knows you might even be able to charm some half decent chiquita. Sportsbars are usually busy, big dogs, macs, time out tavern, tgif (weekdays) and i'm sure i'm missing something.....

and for the record Cuidad Colon is pretty much just an extension of Santa Ana now. So you'd have to prolly hit up Puriscal to get away from the Coke and Whores... Although it really comes down to weather or not you know your limits.

Thanks for the replies. Here is a quote from another forum that expresses my concern pretty well. If I had the budget, I would be fishing everyday!

"Beyond deciding on a location and saving the appropriate funds, I think it is important to consider what you will do with your time once you move. It is important to have something to do other than your vices of choice or you will likely go crazy and burn out. Some decide to work again, some learn the language, some start new families.

The unhappiest guys seem to be the daytime barstool guys that have too much time on their hands. Also, if you have any issues with the vices it will likely get worse here due to easy access and relatively low prices. I have found it necessary to have a regular week and socialize primarily on the weekends.
"

It's gonna be an interesting journey one way or the other.

As good as raising kids in Las Vegas or any other place where tourist and degenerate fucks account for a big percentage of the income.

well if its about raising kids you can give them great education without having to mortage your house/take 50k in student loans/wash your neighbor's car for money

then again, with the credit crunch going over in the US I find it very likely that universities there will soon 'mark to market' and lower their ridiculous prices when they find out noone can afford to pay them anymore

Actually the good schools had dropped tuition for lower-income students, as their endowment funds were ballooning in the up market. (Harvard is tuition free for families making $60k/yr or less, M.I.T. for $75k/yr or less, Stanford for $100k/yr or less). We'll see if they keep that up.

On the other hand the Country Day School (Escazú) is $11k/year per child (Grade 1-12), which gets expensive if you have a large family.
