on an important computer I use at work. I have changed mouse, thrown it against the wall a few times and nothing has helped including our so called computer tech person here at work. What can I do to fix this? I'm thinking someone downloaded something that's a nasty on the computer and it forces it to lock up. I can't get it any spyware or virus program to see because the mouse locks up! Sometimes it also seems that the computer locks up as well. Help!!!!!!

Who makes the mouse? Do you know if it is a USB mouse or a PS2 style mouse? USB has a short flat end, PS2 has a small circular end with pins. Also, is it corded or cordless?

I'm assuming you're using WinXP Pro? Does the PC lock up with no mouse present or is it only when the mouse is present?

Do you have a printer attached to the computer and if so, do you know how it's connected?

If it's a work computer, why not contact your network administrator?

I have to go through my P.O.C. at my worksite first and she's useless. They won't come out to fix something like that because it would be considered a "minor" issue.

I tried the Gateway one that came with it then tried a Microsoft brand the tech person in my building gave me without success. She tried to update my computer to XP (her recommended fix) but there was a problem with it. As far as when it locks up, it's generally the mouse of the pointer on screen. Several times I have been able to Tab through everything and use Enter to confirm for a document I need. Sometimes that works and sometimes, it doesn't. The connections weren't change so that should be fine. It's something on the computer that is probably locking on the mouse on screen. Just don't know what.

you running windows 98?

I would first try removing all mouse driver entries, both in the control panel and device manager (for device manager, right click my computer, click properties, devices) Then search through the computer (Start, Find, Files) for the files mouse.com, mouse.ini, mouse.exe, etc...remove any instances of those.

Then shut down the computer, unplug the mouse, then reboot into "safe mode", (for safe mode, hit F8 when the computer says "Starting Windows 98").

When it's fully booted into safe mode, do a shutdown and reboot into normal mode. Let it find that there is no mouse and let it finish booting up, then shut down the computer again.

With the computer off, plug in the mouse and then boot up into normal mode. It should load the right mouse drivers or prompt you for the CD/disk that has the right driver on it. Hope this helps!
