Peter King: Kerry Backed Pre-emptive Iraq Attack in '97

During a 1997 debate on CNN's "Crossfire," Democratic presidential front-runner John Kerry made the case for launching a pre-emptive attack against Iraq, according to Rep. Peter King, R-N.Y., who appeared with Kerry on the program.

King recounted the debate for WABC Radio's Monica Crowley on Saturday, recalling that at the time, the U.N. Security Council had just adopted a resolution against Iraq that had been watered down at the behest of the French and the Russians.

Back then, however, the candidate who now criticizes President Bush for ignoring French and Russian objections to the Iraq war, criticized the two countries – saying they were compromised by their business dealings with Baghdad.

According to King, Kerry argued: "We know we can't count on the French. We know we can't count on the Russians. We know that Iraq is a danger to the United States and we reserve the right to take pre-emptive action whenever we feel it's in our national interest."

"Crossfire" transcripts from 1997 are no longer available, but King said he'd share a copy of the Kerry tape with Crowley, who said she looked forward to broadcasting it. Stay tuned.

Listen to WABC Radio's Monica Crowley, weeknights 9 to 10 p.m. ET

hansen,

here we go again - another disagreement. I actually think the same thing about dubya - is he the best the republicans can do?

If you guys would bring a more centrist candidate - like McCain - to the fore, I'd have no problem voting that way.

Since that ain't happenin', I'm picking what I think is the best way to take this country going forward, and in this case it is Kerry, IMO.

Going back to Pat's allegation, I'd have to either see the transcript or the tape of what Kerry allegedly said. Too much room right now for speculation and interpretation.

Btw, Hansen & Pat, I ain't that far off in my beliefs politically from where you guys are, I just don't think Bush is competent on either economy or foreign policy. I admire a lot of republicans like Paul O'Neill, Colin Powell, George H. Bush, Norman Schwarzkopf(spelling?), McCain and a whole lot more.

At the same time, there are a lot of Dems I don't care for - Hillary & Bill, James Carville, Al Sharpton and many more.

appreciate your honesty, and your obvious integrity (not fond of some dem scoundrels!). however, please tell me why you don't think that bush is competent in foreign relations and the economy???

and let me preface you, by asking that you NOT answer in misguided media driven generalities:

the economy is turning, but there are no jobs.

he went to iraq w/out the un.

you and i both know those are disingenuous.

Patriot, how r ya? Hope all is well in the Bay State. Did you get to any playoff games? I think I told you my nephew has season tickets. He lives in Uxbridge but works for State St. Bank, and is in the Coast Guard reserve down the Cape at Buzzards Bay. He (Jason) and several friends all went to Houston for the SB. they had a great time. I wish I could have made that trip myself. Now if we can just get the Sox to win just one WS I can die happy. Take care.

Wil.

PS. Don't take this forum to seriously, I don't.
