Game of the Day: Lightning at Blackhawks

Tampa Bay Lightning at Chicago Blackhawks (-149, 5)
Series tied 1-1

An unexpected goaltending carousel has taken the Stanley Cup final on quite the spin as the visiting Tampa Bay Lightning prepare to play the Chicago Blackhawks in Game 3 on Monday. Ben Bishop, who recorded a franchise-best 40 victories this season, exited twice in the third period on Saturday for undisclosed reasons before rookie Andrei Vasilevskiy stopped all five shots he faced to help the Lightning even the series.

"I hate to be that guy," Cooper said moments after Tampa Bay's 4-3 triumph in Game 2. "I know I talk way too much when I get up here, but I will not answer a question about the goaltending or what happened (Saturday)." The following day provided plenty of talk from members of the Lightning without shedding light on either the reason for Bishop's departure or which netminder will get the nod on Monday. Chicago's goaltending situation hardly is without issue, as Corey Crawford yielded four tallies - including goals to defenseman Jason Garrison and Tyler Johnson that could be considered soft at best. "You can't give those up in these games," the two-time William Jennings Trophy recipient said. "That's two goals I pretty much just gave them and gave them momentum back."

TV: 8 p.m. ET, NBCSN, CBC, TVA Sports

LINE HISTORY: Books opened the Hawks in the -147 ballpark, but that's since moved slightly to -149

ABOUT THE LIGHTNING: After being held in check in the series opener, the vaunted Triplets line made its presence felt in Game 2 - highlighted by Johnson's franchise-best 13th goal of the playoffs. Nikita Kucherov collected a goal and an assist and Ondrej Palat was a plus-2 for Tampa Bay, which has seen that line account for 30 of the team's 60 goals in the postseason. Cooper dismissed that Johnson was struggling during his five-game goal drought, noting that "you can't score every single night. It's really hard, unless your name's (Wayne) Gretzky."

ABOUT THE BLACKHAWKS: Like Crawford, Patrick Sharp also would like to put Saturday's dismal performance behind him. Sharp was whistled for both a slashing and high-sticking penalty 2:18 apart in the third period, with the latter paving the way for Garrison's eventual game-winning goal. "It was something I don't think I've ever done before," Sharp said of committing the consecutive penalties. "... I take responsibility and apologize to our penalty killers for putting them under such stress." On Sunday, coach Joel Quenneville noted that defenseman Trevor van Riemsdyk and forward Bryan Bickell could play in Game 3, marking their first action in the Stanley Cup final.

TRENDS:

*Over is 5-1 in Blackhawks last 6 overall.
*Home team is 4-1 in the last 5 meetings.
*Lightning are 7-2 in the last 9 meetings.
*Lightning are 7-2 in their last 9 road games.

COVERS CONSENSUS: Per Covers Consensus, 73 percent of wagers are on the favored Blackhawks.

Tampa coach doesn't know who will start in net
Stephen Campbell

The uncertainty surrounding the Tampa Bay Lightning's murky goaltending situation did not get any clearer Sunday.

When asked by reporters about starting netminder Ben Bishop's status for Game 3 on Monday, Tampa head coach Jon Cooper said he doesn't know who will be in net for the contest. Bishop went to the bench multiple times in the last half of the third period of Game 2 and was replaced with backup Andrei Vasilevskiy, who stopped all five shots fired his way en route to a 4-3 victory.

Cooper has refused to comment on why Bishop didn't finish the game. Steven Stamkos and company are +135 dogs in the third game of the Cup final.

Blackhawks faves for Game 3, but by how much?
Andrew Caley

The Chicago Blackhawks have opened as -147 home favorites for Monday night's Game 3 of the Stanley Cup Final.

With the series tied at one game apiece, the Tampa Bay LIghtning will have to overcome the odds as +135 road dogs if they hope to regain home ice advantage.

The total for Game 3 has open at 5.0 goals.

MLB roundup: Sabathia ejected as Yanks sweep
By THE SPORTS XCHANGE

NEW YORK -- Left-hander CC Sabathia pitched six effective innings before being ejected for arguing balls and strikes as the New York Yankees stretched their season-high winning streak to six games with a 6-2 victory over the Los Angeles Angels on Sunday.

Sabathia (3-7) allowed two runs and five hits, and his frustration boiled over after getting Kole Calhoun on an inning-ending double play in the sixth. Sabathia disagreed with plate umpire Dan Bellino's call on the previous pitch and walked off the mound gesturing toward Bellino.

Third baseman Chase Headley tried to hold back Sabathia, but the argument continued and Bellino ejected Sabathia after a profanity. Manager Joe Girardi raced out of the dugout, kicked dirt on Bellino and was ejected, and Sabathia continued the argument before catcher John Ryan-Murphy and bench coach Rob Thomson helped get him off the field.

Long before the ejection, Sabathia allowed solo home runs to Mike Trout and Albert Pujols in a span of three pitches with one out in the first.

Reds 4, Padres 0

CINCINNATI -- Jay Bruce homered twice and Johnny Cueto pitched seven innings, lifting Cincinnati over San Diego.

The Reds snapped San Diego's four-game winning streak, defeating the Padres for just the second time in the past nine meetings dating to last season. The Padres managed just four hits on Sunday.

Cueto (4-4) had his customary early struggles on Sunday, allowing three hits and issuing a pair of walks in the first three innings.

Pirates 3, Braves 0

ATLANTA - When Pittsburgh right-hander Gerrit Cole got into trouble, he just managed to get out of it every time to become the National League's first nine-game winner.

Cole twice worked out of bases-loaded jams and stranded 10 runners over seven innings. He allowed six hits, walked three and hit two batters, but the Braves were 0-for-7 with runners in scoring position against him. He struck out seven and left after throwing a season-high 116 pitches.

The victory was the fourth straight for Cole (9-2), and the seven scoreless innings lowered his ERA to 1.73 -- best in the NL

Blue Jays 7, Astros 6

TORONTO -- Chris Colabello singled in two runs in the ninth inning and Toronto came from behind to defeat Houston.

The hit extended Colabello's hitting streak to 17 games, stretched the Blue Jays' winning streak to five games and gave the Astros a four-game losing streak.

Jose Bautista hit two solo home runs and Russell Martin hit a two-run blast for the Blue Jays in the finale of a three-game series.

Orioles 7, Indians 3

CLEVELAND -- Adam Jones homered for the third time in four days, Matt Wieters homered and tripled, and Bud Norris came off the disabled list to strike out seven in five innings as Baltimore beat Cleveland.

Jones, the third batter of the game, belted a solo home run off right-hander Carlos Carrasco (7-5) in the first inning to give the Orioles a lead they never relinquished.

Jones has homered in three of his last four games. In his last five games he is 10-for-21 with two triples, three home runs and four RBIs.

Twins 2, Brewers 0

MINNEAPOLIS -- Mike Pelfrey pitched eight shutout innings to lead Minnesota over Milwaukee, salvaging the final game of a three-game series.

The victory kept the Twins one game clear of the Kansas City Royals for first place in the American League Central Division. The Royals and Twins begin a three-game series here on Monday.

For Pelfrey, it was the first time since April 21, 2012, he pitched into the eighth inning. It was his final start before Tommy John surgery on his throwing arm ended his season. The win improved Pelfrey to 5-2 on the season while he lowered his ERA to 2.28, fourth-best in the AL.

Royals 4, Rangers 3

KANSAS CITY, Mo. -- Salvador Perez homered in the eighth to break a tie as Kansas City defeated Texas.

Perez homered off rookie Keone Kela (4-2). Wade Davis (3-1), the third Royals pitcher, claimed the victory, while Greg Holland tossed a perfect ninth for his ninth save. The Royals had dropped nine of 11 before the victory.

The Rangers, who could muster only one hit off Royals right-hander Jeremy Guthrie for the first six innings, scored three runs in the seventh to tie the score.

Phillies 6, Giants 4

PHILADELPHIA -- Jeff Francoeur's two-out, two-run double in the seventh inning helped Philadelphia salvage the finale of a three-game series.

It was the first at-bat of the game for Francoeur, who entered the game as a pinch hitter for Odubel Herrera. That was a response move by Phillies manager Ryne Sandberg after Giants skipper Bruce Bochy pulled starting pitcher Ryan Vogelsong in favor of left-handed reliever Javier Lopez to face the lefty Herrera, who had homered earlier in the afternoon.

Francoeur made Bochy pay for that decision, lining a 1-1 pitch down the left field line to score Freddy Galvis from third and Ben Revere all the way from first, breaking a 3-3 tie that had lasted since the third inning.

Tigers 6, White Sox 4

CHICAGO -- Yoenis Cespedes and Tyler Collins combined for six hits, three runs and three RBIs as Detroit Tigers beat Chicago.

The win was the second straight since the Tigers snapped an eight-game losing streak on Saturday. Detroit also won its first series since taking two of three from Oakland between May 25-27.

Collins was 3-for-3 with a walk, had an RBI and scored twice, including a tying run on J.D.Martinez's two-run homer in the sixth. Cespedes was 3-for-4 with one run and two RBIs, including one from an eighth-inning homer that provided an insurance run.

Red Sox 7, Athletics 4

BOSTON -- Xander Bogaerts hit a two-run double to score the tying and go-ahead runs and lead Boston to a come-from-behind victory and a three-game sweep over Oakland.

Bogaerts' timely double highlighted a seven-run frame and gave the Red Sox their first series sweep of three of more games since July 18-20 of last season.

The Red Sox got eight hits in the comeback before ambidextrous Pat Venditte, Oakland's fifth pitcher of the inning, got the last out.

Cubs 6, Nationals 3

WASHINGTON -- Kris Bryant had three hits and scored twice, and Starlin Castro and Chris Coghlan each added two hits and two RBIs to highlight a 14-hit attack as Chicago beat Washington.

The Cubs won three of four games in the series, while the Nationals fell for the eighth time in 11 games. Washington has scored only 45 runs in its past 17 games and tallied more than four runs just twice in that span.

Chicago had five players with at least two hits, including Anthony Rizzo (two) and Chris Denorfia (three). Rizzo, who also scored two runs, has a career-high 12-game hitting streak and is 11-for-26 (.423) on the current road trip.

Marlins 3, Rockies 2 (10 innings)

DENVER -- Adeiny Hechavarria homered with two outs in the 10th to give Miami a win over Colorado.

The Marlins had not moved a runner to second base after the first inning until Hechavarria drove a 2-1 slider from left-hander Boone Logan (0-2) over the center field wall to seal the rubber game of the series.

A.J. Ramos set the side down in order in the 10th to earn his seventh save and preserve the victory for Sam Dyson (3-2).

Mets 6, Diamondbacks 3

PHOENIX -- Curtis Granderson homered twice and Jacob deGrom pitched seven solid innings to help New York beat Arizona.

Eric Campbell and Wilmer Flores also homered for the Mets, who snapped a two-game losing streak. All five New York runs scored on homers.

DeGrom allowed three runs (two earned) on five hits. He walked three and struck out 10, his sixth career double-digit strikeout game and second in four starts. Jeurys Familia pitched the ninth for his 17th save in 18 chances.

Rays 3, Mariners 1

SEATTLE -- Chris Archer pitched seven solid innings, and made a little history along the way, while Mikie Mahtook homered to lead Tampa Bay to a win over Seattle.

Tampa Bay took three of the four games in the series and has now won five of its past six.

Archer (7-4) allowed one unearned run on six hits. He struck out 11 without giving up a walk, making him the first pitcher in major league history to have 10 or more strikeouts without allowing a walk in three consecutive starts.

KEY STAT: There has not been a draw in ten previous meetings

EXPERT VERDICT: Germany have been quite slack since winning the World Cup, losing to Argentina and Poland. Joachim Low’s side have also conceded against Australia, Ireland and Scotland this season and USA showed they possess plenty of attacking intent in Friday’s 4-3 win over Holland.

RECOMMENDATION: Both teams to score

WNBA Betting Recap - 6/5-6/7
By Joe Williams

League Betting Notes (from Friday, June 5 through Sunday, June 7)

-- Favorites went 8-2 straight up
-- Underdogs went 5-4-1 against the spread (ATS)
-- Home teams posted a 7-3 SU record
-- Home teams posted a 5-4-1 ATS record
-- The 'under' went 6-4

Team Betting Notes

-- The first week for Atlanta (0-2) has been a nightmare, not a dream. They have dropped two games straight up despite being favored by 6 1/2 or more points, including a win by Connecticut (1-1) Sunday despite the Sun coming in as an 11 1/2-point underdog. The Sun are the biggest moneyline winner to date at +550, and Connecticut is 2-0 ATS.

-- Minnesota (2-0) followed up an opening night win Friday against Tulsa (1-1) by winning at Indiana (0-2) Saturday night. The Lynx are 1-1 ATS, but the 'under' has come through in each of their games to date.

-- Washington (2-0) has won each of their games, but they have failed to cover in each. Like Minnesota, the 'under' is also 2-0 in both games for the Mystics. Washington hosts reeling Atlanta Friday night in D.C.

-- New York (1-1) split their weekend games, stunning Atlanta in the opener before getting tripped up in D.C. The Liberty have been a bettors friend early by covering each game.

-- The Shock split their first two games straight-up, but they're 2-0 ATS so far, including a high-scoring 101-93 win over Chicago (1-1) Saturday night in Oklahoma.

-- The 'over' has been the play for Elena Delle Donne and the Sky through two games, cashing both times. The Sky lead the WNBA by averaging 94.0 points per game through two games. Unfortunately, the Sky also rank second-to-last in defense by allowing 86.5 points per game.

-- The Fever have dropped each of their first two games, and they're 0-2 ATS. They will travel to New York Tuesday to face a Liberty team that is 2-0 ATS on the young season.

WHISKEY TAX looks good to best this grouping. A great class horse can't be passed over. With an avg class figure of 91 all signs point to yes. Achieved a 87 TrackMaster Speed Rating in last race. A duplicate effort here should get the victory in this event. HLDONTGHTTOYURDRMS - Battling very well, earned a very strong speed rating in his most recent affair (88). Great win clip combined with recent formidable performances. We think he can handle this group. STRONG HOPE - Mohawk Racetrack has been playing to this solid standardbred's running style, we're looking for a sharp effort.

# 6 SEPTEMBER HALL 4/5

# 9 ROMPAWAY ELVIS 10/1

# 3 KEYSTONE SWAGGER 10/1

Look no further than SEPTEMBER HALL as the wager in here. Many expert selectors know speed is of the utmost importance. This nice horse has credentials with a 87 average number. Been battling with some tougher customers of late, has a distinct class edge. (Average Rating 87). Had one of the most compelling speed ratings of the group of horses in his last contest. I'd recommend using in your wagers. ROMPAWAY ELVIS - Deserves a shot given the positive win percent he sports. KEYSTONE SWAGGER - Could dominate this group, just look at the TrackMaster SR - 77 - from his last event. He looks competitive in this race and should find a way to take advantage of favorable pace numbers.

RECOMMENDED CHOICES

The Walker Group Picks

# 4 MEL AN ME 7/2

# 6 COALITION 5/2

# 3 SILK SPINNER 5/1

I think MEL AN ME is a respectable choice. Ignacio has been on fire the last month, winning at a nifty 18 percent rate. Could beat this group given the 71 Equibase Speed Fig posted in his last outing. He has been running admirably lately while recording very solid Speed Figures. COALITION - Has to be considered a key contender on earnings per start at the distance/surface alone. Should expect a sound performance with the class drop. SILK SPINNER - Has been running admirably lately and will almost certainly be up near the lead early on. Ran a very solid last race.

RECOMMENDED CHOICES

The Walker Group Picks

# 8 ORANGES N VIOLETS 8/1

# 1 PHYLLIS ANN 5/2

# 2 HUNTRESS HELENA 3/5

I have to consider ORANGES N VIOLETS in this event especially at a such a nice price. Will likely be one of the front-runners of the pack going into the midpoint of the affair. PHYLLIS ANN - Exhibits the look of a profitable play, averaging a solid 72 speed rating which is one of the top in this field. This mare looks very good here since Potts has a solid win percentage with horses going this distance. HUNTRESS HELENA - Should keep the strong string of finishing positions intact today. Hackney has this filly racing well and is a formidable pick based on the decent Equibase Speed Figures earned in short races lately.

#8 UP ALL NIGHT (ML=5/2)
#7 LALUN JEDI (ML=15/1)

UP ALL NIGHT - Likes to go to the lead and the fact that today is a shorter trip should be advantageous. Using this jock/trainer combination is a good move. Taking a trip down the class ladder; has the class ability to make her presence felt. LALUN JEDI - Rodriguez drops her down to this class level. You don't need too much more from the horse's history to believe this animal should have a chance to win at this level.

Vulnerable Contenders: #5 RAPIDEZ (ML=8/5), #1 TEENEEWEENEEBIKINI (ML=4/1),

RAPIDEZ - Hard to take this pony at this price after the finish position (fourth) in the last event. There's early speed, zip, and more zip in this event. Doesn't look promising for this equine. TEENEEWEENEEBIKINI - Can't bet on this pony in today's sprint of 5 furlongs. Hasn't even finished in the money in a short distance event of late.

#1 GUYANA PRINCESS (ML=5/2)

GUYANA PRINCESS - I like that most recent race on May 22nd at Hazel Park where she ran second. Last race May 22nd was pretty strong for a $4,000 Claiming race so this mare's race wasn't all that bad. EPS (earnings per start) is something that I think can be a valuable factor. This racer is ranked at the top in this group. PP lines show this pony with three improving speed figs. Houghton should be on a live one in this race.

Vulnerable Contenders: #1A VORTEX (ML=5/2), #8 DREAMING FOR NOW (ML=7/2), #5 WAR IN DUBAI (ML=9/2),

VORTEX - This questionable contender hasn't been close to the winner at the finish of late. Notched a common fig last out in a $4,000 Claiming race on May 29th. Not likely to see an improved performance off of that figure. DREAMING FOR NOW - Not likely that this animal will finish better than she did last time out when placing third. WAR IN DUBAI - A bit of a less than stellar performance when this mare finished sixth.

Top HatGUEST COMMENTARY: The Brain - GUYANA PRINCESS - My analysis says it usually takes a horse a couple of races after a layoff to get back into proper racing condition. That's just what we have here, so I have high expectations for this horse.

Mohawk: Monday 6/8 Analysis
By Garnet Barnsdale

DRF

Race 4 - $50,000 Guaranteed Pick Four Pool

EARLY $1 PICK 4:

6 / 2,3,4,9 / 1,2,3,8 / 7,9 = $32

LATE $1 PICK 4: 7,9 / 3 / 4,5,6 / 1,3,7,9,10 = $30

MEET STATS: 103 - 324 / $583.60 BEST BETS: 14 - 29/ $49.90

SPOT PLAYS: 5 - 27 / $45.60

Best Bet: INTIMIDATE (2th)

Spot Play: ALONE IN SPADES (6th)

Race 1

(1) MONEY MAVEN trotted home powerfully last week first time with Jamieson at the controls. He moves inside and returns in a week this time; top call. (8) CASH FOR GOLD showed great improvement when a strong second to a winner that was dropping in class; he’s dangerous. (2) MARKET RALLY hasn’t been pushed very hard yet this year. With two tighteners in and moving to the inside, that likely changes tonight.

Race 2

(4) INTIMIDATE wasn’t asked for much until the stretch last week in his 6-year-old debut, but he was powering up late. He should be much better this week. (2) DAYLON MAGICIAN stole an easy first 1/2 and was gone; he may get an early challenge here from the far outside. (5) FLANAGAN MEMORY flashed a 27 flat then 26 flat last 1/4 in his two qualifiers. He can threaten right away here.

Race 3

(1) PRESCOTTS HOPE improved a bit last week when claimed. Perhaps trainer Brealey can wake him up in this spot. (2) LIKEAVIRGIN comes in from Northville Downs sporting three monster wins when heavily bet. He will be swinging on the engine for as far as he can last. (3) PAIN IN THE GLASS also ships in with improving form and Henry drives for his nephew here. He’s in with a shot.

Race 4

(6) RAFA is from a dam that has produced 5 winners from 5 starters including local mare Putmeintogo, who took a mark of 1:51 1/5 last year. This one flew home in her qualifier on May 29 and looks all systems go. (9) DEES ROCKETMAN drops out of New York Sires Stakes and is the one to beat, but has also already had 12 chances without converting. (1) WINDSONG LEOPOLD is by a hot local sire out of a dam that has been a decent producer. It wouldn’t take a ton of improvement to share here in his debut.

Race 5

(3) CATCH THE DREAM couldn’t gain into a quickening pace in the top class last week, but he gets to drop into a field in which he should be a main contender; top call. (9) SLIP INTO GLIDE has a similar scenario to the choice and likely gets sent early here. (2) BURNIN MONEY has done anything but the past two weeks, clicking twice at square prices. His good recent form should be respected.

Race 6

(2) ALONEINSPADES tipped his hand in his latest vs. better and should be much more aggressively driven here. (8) MYSTICAL JET had a tightener and now switches to a top catch-driver; using. (3) DESERONTO greatly improved his overall speed when taking a new life’s mark at Flamboro last week. He is dangerous.

Race 7

(7) I SCOOT SAM left hard and closed fast again down the lane. He is much sharper with Lasix and can take this to close out the early pick 4. (9) IDEAL SHADOW closed like a rocket off excess cover to just miss; using at a square price. (10) TWOMICKEYTRIP dropped and popped off a month break. Hard to say how things will go for him from the 10-hole this week.

Race 8

(3) WINDSONG GEANT was out the route last time chasing a tough winner. He will likely get a better trip here moving inside and this is a group he can handle. (6) STRONG HOPE was bottled up for most of the stretch last week, but came quickly once free almost nailing the winner late. These are tougher, but with his improving form he could do at a price (5) HLDONTGHTTOYURDRMS put up some honest splits and was only passed late by one who was taking his second straight win. He is another contender here.

Race 9

(4) GENESEE has been displaying improving form the past two starts and survived a nightmarish trip last week to still finish third. He should win one soon; maybe tonight? (6) INTENDED STYLE is the obvious one to chase down and should be used on late pick 4 tickets. (5) RAVE ON is 0 for 11 this year after winning 10 times last year. His form is also improving though and he could break through here.

Race 10

(7) SOUTHWIND AMAZON went a huge mile uncovered from the 8-hole to win going away at Sarnia first time out of conditioner Adams’ barn. Don’t sell this one short despite the class rise. (10) FRIDAYNIGHTFLIGHT gets class relief here and has some upset potential. (3) WHOSURPAL had some pretty good ones behind him last time out at London and fits here. (1) BOOMBOOM BALLYKEEL didn’t show much from an outer post in the same race as the one above but should get a good trip here from the inside. (2) JM JET SET is another to consider in a pick 4 leg that requires wide coverage.
