MLB roundup: Sabathia ejected as Yanks sweep
By THE SPORTS XCHANGE
NEW YORK -- Left-hander CC Sabathia pitched six effective innings before being ejected for arguing balls and strikes as the New York Yankees stretched their season-high winning streak to six games with a 6-2 victory over the Los Angeles Angels on Sunday.
Sabathia (3-7) allowed two runs and five hits, and his frustration boiled over after getting Kole Calhoun on an inning-ending double play in the sixth. Sabathia disagreed with plate umpire Dan Bellino's call on the previous pitch and walked off the mound gesturing toward Bellino.
Third baseman Chase Headley tried to hold back Sabathia, but the argument continued and Bellino ejected Sabathia after a profanity. Manager Joe Girardi raced out of the dugout, kicked dirt on Bellino and was ejected, and Sabathia continued the argument before catcher John Ryan-Murphy and bench coach Rob Thomson helped get him off the field.
Long before the ejection, Sabathia allowed solo home runs to Mike Trout and Albert Pujols in a span of three pitches with one out in the first.
Reds 4, Padres 0
CINCINNATI -- Jay Bruce homered twice and Johnny Cueto pitched seven innings, lifting Cincinnati over San Diego.
The Reds snapped San Diego's four-game winning streak, defeating the Padres for just the second time in the past nine meetings dating to last season. The Padres managed just four hits on Sunday.
Cueto (4-4) had his customary early struggles on Sunday, allowing three hits and issuing a pair of walks in the first three innings.
Pirates 3, Braves 0
ATLANTA - When Pittsburgh right-hander Gerrit Cole got into trouble, he just managed to get out of it every time to become the National League's first nine-game winner.
Cole twice worked out of bases-loaded jams and stranded 10 runners over seven innings. He allowed six hits, walked three and hit two batters, but the Braves were 0-for-7 with runners in scoring position against him. He struck out seven and left after throwing a season-high 116 pitches.
The victory was the fourth straight for Cole (9-2), and the seven scoreless innings lowered his ERA to 1.73 -- best in the NL
Blue Jays 7, Astros 6
TORONTO -- Chris Colabello singled in two runs in the ninth inning and Toronto came from behind to defeat Houston.
The hit extended Colabello's hitting streak to 17 games, stretched the Blue Jays' winning streak to five games and gave the Astros a four-game losing streak.
Jose Bautista hit two solo home runs and Russell Martin hit a two-run blast for the Blue Jays in the finale of a three-game series.
Orioles 7, Indians 3
CLEVELAND -- Adam Jones homered for the third time in four days, Matt Wieters homered and tripled, and Bud Norris came off the disabled list to strike out seven in five innings as Baltimore beat Cleveland.
Jones, the third batter of the game, belted a solo home run off right-hander Carlos Carrasco (7-5) in the first inning to give the Orioles a lead they never relinquished.
Jones has homered in three of his last four games. In his last five games he is 10-for-21 with two triples, three home runs and four RBIs.
Twins 2, Brewers 0
MINNEAPOLIS -- Mike Pelfrey pitched eight shutout innings to lead Minnesota over Milwaukee, salvaging the final game of a three-game series.
The victory kept the Twins one game clear of the Kansas City Royals for first place in the American League Central Division. The Royals and Twins begin a three-game series here on Monday.
For Pelfrey, it was the first time since April 21, 2012, he pitched into the eighth inning. It was his final start before Tommy John surgery on his throwing arm ended his season. The win improved Pelfrey to 5-2 on the season while he lowered his ERA to 2.28, fourth-best in the AL.
Royals 4, Rangers 3
KANSAS CITY, Mo. -- Salvador Perez homered in the eighth to break a tie as Kansas City defeated Texas.
Perez homered off rookie Keone Kela (4-2). Wade Davis (3-1), the third Royals pitcher, claimed the victory, while Greg Holland tossed a perfect ninth for his ninth save. The Royals had dropped nine of 11 before the victory.
The Rangers, who could muster only one hit off Royals right-hander Jeremy Guthrie for the first six innings, scored three runs in the seventh to tie the score.
Phillies 6, Giants 4
PHILADELPHIA -- Jeff Francoeur's two-out, two-run double in the seventh inning helped Philadelphia salvage the finale of a three-game series.
It was the first at-bat of the game for Francoeur, who entered the game as a pinch hitter for Odubel Herrera. That was a response move by Phillies manager Ryne Sandberg after Giants skipper Bruce Bochy pulled starting pitcher Ryan Vogelsong in favor of left-handed reliever Javier Lopez to face the lefty Herrera, who had homered earlier in the afternoon.
Francoeur made Bochy pay for that decision, lining a 1-1 pitch down the left field line to score Freddy Galvis from third and Ben Revere all the way from first, breaking a 3-3 tie that had lasted since the third inning.
Tigers 6, White Sox 4
CHICAGO -- Yoenis Cespedes and Tyler Collins combined for six hits, three runs and three RBIs as Detroit Tigers beat Chicago.
The win was the second straight since the Tigers snapped an eight-game losing streak on Saturday. Detroit also won its first series since taking two of three from Oakland between May 25-27.
Collins was 3-for-3 with a walk, had an RBI and scored twice, including a tying run on J.D.Martinez's two-run homer in the sixth. Cespedes was 3-for-4 with one run and two RBIs, including one from an eighth-inning homer that provided an insurance run.
Red Sox 7, Athletics 4
BOSTON -- Xander Bogaerts hit a two-run double to score the tying and go-ahead runs and lead Boston to a come-from-behind victory and a three-game sweep over Oakland.
Bogaerts' timely double highlighted a seven-run frame and gave the Red Sox their first series sweep of three of more games since July 18-20 of last season.
The Red Sox got eight hits in the comeback before ambidextrous Pat Venditte, Oakland's fifth pitcher of the inning, got the last out.
Cubs 6, Nationals 3
WASHINGTON -- Kris Bryant had three hits and scored twice, and Starlin Castro and Chris Coghlan each added two hits and two RBIs to highlight a 14-hit attack as Chicago beat Washington.
The Cubs won three of four games in the series, while the Nationals fell for the eighth time in 11 games. Washington has scored only 45 runs in its past 17 games and tallied more than four runs just twice in that span.
Chicago had five players with at least two hits, including Anthony Rizzo (two) and Chris Denorfia (three). Rizzo, who also scored two runs, has a career-high 12-game hitting streak and is 11-for-26 (.423) on the current road trip.
Marlins 3, Rockies 2 (10 innings)
DENVER -- Adeiny Hechavarria homered with two outs in the 10th to give Miami a win over Colorado.
The Marlins had not moved a runner to second base after the first inning until Hechavarria drove a 2-1 slider from left-hander Boone Logan (0-2) over the center field wall to seal the rubber game of the series.
A.J. Ramos set the side down in order in the 10th to earn his seventh save and preserve the victory for Sam Dyson (3-2).
Mets 6, Diamondbacks 3
PHOENIX -- Curtis Granderson homered twice and Jacob deGrom pitched seven solid innings to help New York beat Arizona.
Eric Campbell and Wilmer Flores also homered for the Mets, who snapped a two-game losing streak. All five New York runs scored on homers.
DeGrom allowed three runs (two earned) on five hits. He walked three and struck out 10, his sixth career double-digit strikeout game and second in four starts. Jeurys Familia pitched the ninth for his 17th save in 18 chances.
Rays 3, Mariners 1
SEATTLE -- Chris Archer pitched seven solid innings, and made a little history along the way, while Mikie Mahtook homered to lead Tampa Bay to a win over Seattle.
Tampa Bay took three of the four games in the series and has now won five of its past six.
Archer (7-4) allowed one unearned run on six hits. He struck out 11 without giving up a walk, making him the first pitcher in major league history to have 10 or more strikeouts without allowing a walk in three consecutive starts.
