KEY STAT: Portugal have conceded just four goals in their last 12 World Cup finals matches

EXPERT VERDICT: Germany's clash with Portugal is one of the most attractive clashes of the group stage and may not go the way the markets are anticipating. In terms of squad strength the Germans are superior but Portugal are a threat to anyone when Cristiano Ronaldo is on song and the Real Madrid man has had an exceptional season.

DRF HARNESS
Race 4 - $50,000 Guaranteed Pick Four Pool

Best Bet: JET AIRWAY (10th)

Spot Play: SANTANNA BLUE CHIP (4th)

Race 1

(4) ZEUS LIGHTNING finally draws inside and likely will offer a low price in here. He's versatile, has all kinds of back class and has hit the board in two of his last three starts. (8) MONEY MAVEN raced very well in his latest and may offer a price like last week. (6) OPEN ALL DOORS has hit the board in two of his last three starts and continues to offer a high price.

Race 2

(1) RG RIPTIDE moves into the Auciello barn, adds lasix and gets the rail. (7) REB THE RAIDER has a good record this season and was a winner two starts back. (8) LOVES A CHALLENGE is winless from 15 starts this season, but has hit the board in three of his last four and continues to offer a high price.

Race 3

(3) DANICA is overdue for her first season win after finishing second in each of her four starts this season, including last week’s SBOA final. (5) MARGIE adds lasix in this contest following a disappointing sixth-place finish in the SBOA final after capturing her elimination. Trainer Ducharme hopes to have corrected her final quarter struggles last week and once again poses as a main threat with a good post and top driver in Filion. (8) I JASMIN was much more impressive in her elimination than her performance in the final last start.

Race 4

(2) SANTANNA BLUE CHIP has been showing 1:51 speed in each of his last two starts, draws inside and drops in class. (1) CLASSIC GENT gets the rail this week along with Waples in the bike and likely will be forwardly placed. (4) FIRE ON THE WATER has the speed and closed well last week at Georgian Downs.

Race 5

(4) MAJESTIC GINGER won last week at this level in her season debut and once again will get a lot of attention from many horseplayers. (5) JUSTCALLMERONALD disappointed last week as the favourite for new trainer O'Sullivan. He cleared to the front and set up soft fractions before coming up empty down the stretch. (3) DAMFOOLRMILLIONAIR comes out of the Maxwell barn and qualified very well on June 10.

Race 6

(6) DOCS HOSS is fresh off a win and has won two of his last three starts. (8) LENNON BLUE CHIP was dropped into a lower claiming level last week and provided a much better effort for trainer Moreau. (2) LITTLE QUICK has been knocking on the door in each of his last three starts and is due for another big effort.

Race 7

(2) MUSCLE BABE has won two of three starts this season, including last week against the provinces' top sophomore filly trotters. (9) SWEETIE HEARTS made a miscue last week in the SBOA final, but prior to that in her elimination she raced very well to finish second. (8) MISS LIV found a new gear last week to close from tenth-to-second for team Baillargeon.

Race 8

(7) SILVERHILL SHADOW previously raced in the North America Cup elimination and his division of the Somebeachsomehwere. (1) TAURANGA gets the rail and has been knocking on the door in each of his last two starts. (9) BUDDHA BLUE CHIP will have to overcome the outside post nine, but this talented son of Art Major has the speed, versatility and top trainer in his corner.

Race 9

(5) RECKON IM READY has raced very competitively since being claimed on May 9 despite not winning. (1) GOTTA SECRET gets the rail, comes out of Moreau's barn and drops in class. (7) MMS LUCKY BOY received a nice trip along the inside en route to a third-place finish in his latest. He remains in this class and proved to have the speed to compete.

Race 10

(4) JET AIRWAY raced well in his North America Cup elimination and faces a much easier class of horses. (2) COBBLE BEACH draws inside and is fresh off a winning effort last week in this class. Prior to that outing he was knocking on the door and finishing his miles very strong. (7) PLAY IT AGAIN SAM just missed last week at this level as he tasted defeat by a head.

DRF HARNESS

Race 5 - $10,000 Guaranteed Pick Five Pool

MEET STATS: 170 - 504 / $896.30 BEST BETS: 30 - 41 / $99.70

Best Bet: HI HO STEVERINO (9th)

Spot Play: BE PACIFIC (3rd)

Race 1

(1) JW RACER returns locally, draws best and appears way overdue. (8) VIPER HANOVER plunges to the basement off some so-so efforts and Stratton needs to be aggressive from this spot. (4) STRUNG OUT showed some forward progress for the first time in forever last out; maybe he can improve further.

Race 2

(2) ARMBRO CASINO has speed and class; veteran only needs to behave himself to score. (3) COLUMBIA LION has put in some decent efforts of late without a victory to show for it. (6) APRILSHOWERS has been off a long time but she's capable with these.

Race 3

(5) BE PACIFIC doesn't look like much on paper but his last effort was sneaky-good; worth a look here. (3) BLADE SEELSTER returns at a reduced level and he has big-time speed. (8) COSMICPEDIA would likely be the one to beat had he drawn inside.

Race 4

(1) PACIFIC MARGAUX has the ability to compete with these and he can prosper given a good trip. (8) BROADWAYS FORTUNE debuts for Garcia-Herrera and gets a catch-driver in the bike tonight; watch out. (5) SISTER GOLA qualifed very willingly in preparation for her debut for Taylor Gower.

Race 5

(1) DARLABAR MAN drops to a new low claiming price and the veteran has always hinted at serious ability. Yes, that's correct, I picked John Plutino in back-to-back races. (3) NOWERLAND FIREBIRD hasn't looked good in her last couple of local efforts but last week's try at Philly was improved. (2) GO JESSE GO ships in for the live Brainard outfit.

Race 6

(3) WESTERN COLE has raced well enough of late to warrant top billing, especially with Sears in the bike. (5) BABE'S I SCOOT has also been pretty live lately and Brennan can be firing from the gate. (1) SAMS TREASURE looked broken-down a couple of months ago, but suddenly he's shooting for five straight.

Race 7

(4) MYSTICAL QUEEN ships in from Ohio, joins the Julie Miller barn and gets Sears in the bike. Watch the board. (2) MY AMERICAN TALLIA has shown some promise coming back as a three-year-old. (7) ROCKNROLL MEG was an upset winner in her lone local appearance.

Race 8

(7) CARD SHOCK has raced well in his last two at The Meadowlands and the colt may just be faster than these. (3) WELL DID is winless in eight career starts and he may be the camera-shy type. (1) WELL TO DO should go well from the best post.

Race 9

(1) HI HO STEVERINO drops in class, gets serious post relief and the Fraley trainee is clearly the one to beat here. (4) LISTOWEL hasn't really fired recently but he's a proven commodity with these. (2) BIG BAD ELI appears ready for a breakthrough effort.

Race 10

(1) DISARREI got jammed in last out and never had a shot; prior handful of efforts were solid. (3) ACID RAIN has been a steady check-earner with this type. (2) USEFUL HANOVER was collared on the front end then pulled up with broken equipment last out; I guess that effort can be ignored.

Race 11

(4) DUTCH RICHMAN debuts for new connections via claim but his current form is impossible to ignore. (2) DEFIANCE N steps down a notch in class and the veteran certainly knows how to win. (5) PANDA MAN may need a fast pace to close into.

Race 12

(5) LIFE OF SMILEY was arguably facing tougher down at Philly; she's my default pick here because I don't like anybody else. (3) CUT A DEAL hasn't looked that great in her last couple. (7) BEAUTIFUL LADY steps up looking for two in a row and she was Brennan's choice.

Germany v Portugal

[h=2]2014 FIFA WORLD CUP[/h]
  • Venue: Arena Fonte Nova, Salvador
  • Date: Monday 16 June
  • Kick-off: 17:00 BST

[h=2]TEAM NEWS[/h]Germany's Philipp Lahm and Manuel Neuer have recovered from the injuries that hampered them in the build-up to the World Cup.
Lahm could move from right-back into the defensive midfield role he plays for club side Bayern Munich.
Portugal captain Cristiano Ronaldo is expected to start despite being troubled by tendonitis in his left knee in recent weeks.
Young defensive midfielder William Carvalho is in line for a start.
[h=2]MATCH PREVIEW[/h]The build-up to this eagerly awaited Group G opener has been dominated by one man - who else but Portugal's Cristiano Ronaldo.
The saga over whether he is fit or not has led sport news bulletins around the world and seen camera crews capturing every ice pack administered to his left knee at Portugal's training camp.

No one will be more desperate to be fully fit and have a great World Cup than the two-time Ballon d'Or winner. Disappointing tournaments in 2006 and 2010 are the only real blots on his otherwise impeccable CV.
His two goals from 10 previous matches at finals is a poor return, but at least it is one more than old foe Lionel Messi had managed going into these finals.
Portugal's reliance on Ronaldo is huge and there is no getting away from the fact that without him they look slightly pedestrian, as shown in two pedestrian displays in warm-up matches against Greece and Mexico.
But with him leading their attack they can be devastating, and Germany coach Joachim Low has said Paulo Bento's side are "world champions in counter attacking".
Germany have hardly had the smoothest build-up to this World Cup themselves. The usually unflappable Low has cut a troubled figure due to an injury-hit squad, loss of form by key players, poor performances in friendlies and mounting pressure to end their trophy drought that now stretches to an un-German 18 years.
The loss of free-scoring attacking midfielder Marco Reus to injury on the eve of the tournament was a further blow to morale.
However, a good thrashing of Armenia in their final warm-up match, coupled with the return of captain Philipp Lahm and keeper Manuel Neuer from injury, prompted Low to say he is now "in a good mood". And, as everyone knows, the German team always comes good when the action starts.
[h=2]MATCH FACTS[/h]Head-to-head

  • Portugal have only won three of their 17 previous internationals against Germany (D5, L9).
  • The Germans have won their last three meetings - including the third place play-off match at the 2006 World Cup, which ended 3-1 following a Bastian Schweinsteiger brace and a Petit own goal for the Germans.
  • Germany have beaten Portugal at three of the last four major tournaments: the 2006 World Cup, Euro 2008 and Euro 2012.
Germany

  • Germany's will become the first team to play 100 World Cup matches on Monday.
  • Miroslav Klose currently has 14 World Cup goals - only Brazilian star Ronaldo has more (15).
  • Germany have won their opening match in every World Cup since 1990. In no fewer than four of those six matches, they scored at least four goals, beating Yugoslavia 4-1 in 1990, Saudi Arabia 8-0 in 2002, Costa Rica 4-2 in 2006 and Australia 4-0 four years ago.
  • Germany have only lost one of their last 18 games in the group stages of the World Cup - 0-1 against Serbia on 18 June 2010.
  • They have opened their last six World Cups with a victory; the last time they failed to win their opening game was back in 1986, when they drew 1-1 with Uruguay.
  • Germany scored more goals than any other team in the 2014 European World Cup qualifiers (36).
Portugal

  • Portugal have lost their two games in the World Cup against their opponents in Group G - USA in 2002 and Germany in 2006.
  • Joao Moutinho delivered more assists than any other player in European World Cup qualifiers (10).
  • In the group round of the last two World Cups, Portugal conceded just once in six matches (Jose Fonseca for Mexico in 2006).
  • Cristiano Ronaldo is aiming to become the first player since Jurgen Klinsmann to score in six successive major tournaments having previous scored at least one goal at the European championships of 2004, 2008 and 2012, plus the 2006 and 2010 World Cup finals.

KEY STAT: Iran kept six clean sheets in their last eight World Cup qualifiers

EXPERT VERDICT: Iran have been written off as whipping boys in Group F but are likely to be well-organised by experienced head-coach Carlos Queiroz and may spring a surprise in their first game. Queiroz has been working with most of his squad since April and his meticulous preparation can pay off against Nigeria, who look an ordinary side.

Iran v Nigeria

[h=2]2014 FIFA WORLD CUP[/h]
  • Venue: Arena da Baixada, Curitiba
  • Date: Monday 16 June 2014
  • Kick-off:20:00 BST

[h=2]TEAM NEWS[/h]Iran left-back Hashem Beikzadeh, who suffered an injury in a warm-up game, is back in training but lacks fitness.
They will reportedly be unchanged from their last friendly, with Charlton's Reza Ghoochannejhad their lone striker.
Nigeria lost first-choice left-back Uwa Echiejile before the tournament began, so Juwon Oshaniwa will replace him.
Centre-back Kenneth Omeruo should be available despite a knock in training but midfielder Ruben Gabriel is reportedly doubtful.
[h=2]MATCH PREVIEW[/h]The goals have flowed freely at this World Cup, but Iran kept more clean sheets in qualifying than anyone else, while Nigeria's goal tally was the lowest of any side who made it to Brazil. So if there is a goalfest in Curitiba it must surely be something the locals are putting in the water.
Neither team has won a World Cup game since 1998, and neither approach this fixture in particularly good form. Iran laboured to three successive draws against Belarus, Montenegro and Angola beforebeating Trinidad and Tobago in their final warm-up match. The Super Eagles drew with Mexico, Scotland and Greece before sufferingdefeat to the USA.
Coach Carlos Queiroz has been outspoken in his criticism of Iran's poor preparations. Allegations of badly-fitting kit briefly hit the headlines, but a lack of games against good opposition is a real hindrance. The highest-ranked side they have faced under Queiroz is Tunisia - currently 48th in the Fifa rankings - so they can justifiably be considered an unknown quantity.
In recent games Queiroz has fielded a defensive 4-4-1-1 formation featuring two wide players who often play at full-back for their clubs. However, his instinctive caution may be tempered by the knowledge that this game probably represents their best chance of only a second World Cup victory.

The Super Eagles are winless in eight World Cup games, losing six of those matches, and so far Stephen Keshi has prioritised blooding young players with the hope of translating Nigeria's brilliant record at youth level to senior success.
The squad selected by Keshi is one of the youngest in Brazil, with 15 players aged 25 or under - many of whom may not even remember Nigeria's last World Cup win. In contrast, the Iranians have 11 squad members the wrong side of 30, all but one of them outfield players.
If Iran are able to clip the wings of Keshi's Eaglets, "Big Boss" will come under real pressure from his critics in the Nigerian media.
[h=2]MATCH FACTS[/h]Head-to-head

  • The only previous meeting was a friendly in January 1998, when Ahmed Garcia's goal gave Nigeria a 1-0 victory in Hong Kong.
Iran

  • The Iranians have lost their opening game at their three previous World Cup appearances.
  • They have won only of nine previous World Cup games (D2, L6) and have never kept a clean sheet.
  • However, they kept more clean sheets in qualifying (10) than any other side.
  • They have committed an average of 22 fouls per World Cup game, the highest ratio of any team involved in Brazil (prior to the start of the current tournament).
Nigeria

  • The Super Eagles are winless in their last eight World Cup matches (L6, D2).
  • They managed just seven shots on target at the 2010 World Cup - only three teams had lower totals (Honduras, New Zealand and Algeria).
  • Over half (11 of 21) of the goals that Nigeria have conceded at World Cups have come from set plays.
  • Their only previous World Cup game against Asian opposition was their 2-2 draw with South Korea during the group stage of the 2010 tournament - a result which eliminated them.

KEY STAT: USA have kept one clean sheet in their last eight World Cup finals matches

EXPERT VERDICT: Ghana were by far the most impressive of the African teams at World Cup 2010 and can make a strong start to this year's tournament. The Black Stars squad has a nice blend of experience and quality and they should have the edge over Jurgen Klinsmann's USA who are short of match-winning talent.

Ghana v USA

2014 FIFA WORLD CUP

  • Venue: Estadio das Dunas, Natal
  • Date: Monday 16 June
  • Kick-off: 23:00 BST

TEAM NEWS

USA coach Jurgen Klinsmann looks set to persist with a diamond formation that gives midfielder Michael Bradley an advanced role.
Clint Dempsey and Jozy Altidore will start upfront.
Ghana coach James Kwesi Appiah must decide whether to pick Jordan Ayew after he scored a hat-trick in last week's warm-up match against South Korea.
Majeed Waris tore a thigh muscle in that game and is not expected to play.
MATCH PREVIEW

Both sides come into this World Cup with revenge in the air for differing reasons. Ghana are desperate to end the hurt caused by their controversial exit four years ago - quite literally at the hands of Uruguay's Luis Suarez.
As for the USA, they want to end the hex the Ghanaians have over them, having lost to the Black Stars at the last two World Cups.
If Ghana are to make it three in a row, USA's hopes of making the knockout stages will be hanging by a thread given Portugal and Germany lie in wait in Group G. As a result, both sides are seeing it as a must-win fixture and USA coach Jurgen Klinsmann has said "it's pretty much like a knockout game".

The furore over Landon Donovan's omission from his squad has subsided, for now, and it will be interesting to see how Klinsmann's team will line-up. He has been experimenting with a diamond formation in recent months with midfielder Michael Bradley and forward Clint Dempsey absolutely crucial to their hopes.
Striker Jozy Altidore may be a figure of fun to watchers of English football, having scored just twice in 59 appearances in the Premier League, but he is a goal machine for the States and scored a brace in the warm-up win over Nigeria to match his tally for Sunderland in the whole of this season.
Ghana have the youngest squad at this World Cup, but are a side packed with experience at the highest level. Key man Michael Essien made his return to international football last year and has slotted back in perfectly to a team also containing maverick talents like Kevin-Prince Boateng, Sulley Muntari, Andre Ayew and the outstanding Kwadwo Asamoah.
Up front is skipper Asamoah Gyan, for whom this World Cup means more to than most. It was his missed penalty in the last minute of extra time following Suarez's handball that denied Ghana the chance of becoming the first African side to reach a World Cup semi-final.
MATCH FACTS

Head-to-head

  • Ghana have beaten the USA 2-1 at the last two World Cups (2006 group stage, 2010 second round).
  • USA coach Jurgen Klinsmann scored twice against Ghana in a 6-1 friendly win by Germany in 1993.
Ghana

  • The USA have only kept two clean sheets in their last 23 World Cup matches.
  • USA boss Jurgen Klinsmann played 17 games and scored 11 goals at the World Cup with Germany. This is his second World Cup as head coach, having led his home nation to third place in 2006.
  • The USA are facing African opponents for the third straight match in World Cups (Ghana 2006 and 2010, Algeria 2010).
  • They won a national record 12 straight matches in 2013.
  • It's been 12 years since a USA striker scored at a World Cup (Brian McBride v Mexico).
  • DaMarcus Beasley could become the first American to play in four World Cups.
USA

  • Four of Ghana's nine World Cup goals have come against the USA.
  • Ghana scored more goals than any other team in the 2014 African World Cup qualifiers (25).
  • No player scored more goals than Ghana's Asamoah Gyan in the 2014 African World Cup qualifiers (six). He has also scored four and assisted two of Ghana's nine World Cup goals in total, and netted the winner against USA in 2010.
  • If Gyan scores twice, then he will surpass Cameroon's Roger Milla and become the top African goalscorer in the World Cup with six goals.

# 2 COLDBLACK 2/1

# 6 KINGOFGOLDSTREET 5/1

I've got to go with INSIGHTING. May best this field here, showing competitive figures of late. This gelding has a strong win percent in dirt sprint races. Has to be carefully examined - I like the figures from the last race. COLDBLACK - Had one of the best speed figs of this group of animals in his last competition. Vazquez has a strong winning percentage with horses racing in dirt sprint races. KINGOFGOLDSTREET - Looks strong to be on the front end at the first call.

# 6 BLOWN SAVE 3/1

# 8 DANCING LOUNGE 5/1

# 10 SAYLER'S CREEK 3/1

BLOWN SAVE looks to be a very strong contender. He has been running quite well and the speed figs are among the strongest in this group. This gelding has been constatntly running well in his latest outings. DANCING LOUNGE - Ought to be used in the exotic wagers. With a +14 return on investment, this jock and trainer combo has produced formidable profits recently for players. SAYLER'S CREEK - Is a solid choice - given the 108 speed rating from his most recent race. Looks decent to be on the front end at the first call.

Mountaineer - Race #9 - Post: 10:04pm - Claiming - 5.5 furlongs on the Dirt. Purse: $8,700 Class Rating: 78

Rating: Golden DollarGolden DollarGolden Dollar

#9 CHILLIN VILLAIN (ML=20/1)
#8 STORMING WOLF (ML=10/1)

CHILLIN VILLAIN - This speedball should benefit from this contest's shorter trip. Classic handicapping angle - 3rd or 4th start after a vacation generally leads to a big effort. Today's the day. Last time around the track, finished ninth in the mud at Mountaineer. Have to do better right here. STORMING WOLF - I think that a sprinter coming off a layoff will usually run his best in the 3rd or 4th start back. Don't throw this one out due to his last clash at Mountaineer where he finished sixth on a muddy track. Expect better today.

Vulnerable Contenders: #7 CUVEE CITY (ML=7/5), #2 NO PEACE AT ALL (ML=2/1), #3 FUHRLANG (ML=8/1),

CUVEE CITY - Going to have a hard go of it with all of the other early foot in this race. NO PEACE AT ALL - It seems like too much speed is entered in this race. This speedy one will likely get baked on the front end. Not probable that the speed rating he recorded on June 4th will be good enough in this race. FUHRLANG - Awfully hard to bet on this steed when he hasn't been showing any signs of life lately. Not easy to bet on this steed this time out. Make him show you something in a sprint event before you wager on him in a race of 5 1/2 furlongs. Finished fourth in his most recent race with a disappointing speed figure. When I look at today's class rating, it would take an improved performance to prove victorious after that in this field.

#3 WAR HITCH (ML=4/1)
#2 LE GRAND ROUGE (ML=5/2)

WAR HITCH - Have to give this horse a good shot. Ran a nice contest last time out within the last month. LE GRAND ROUGE - I expect this mount to stun some prognosticators in today's event.

Vulnerable Contenders: #7 BUGSY LOSTY (ML=8/5), #1 THEPRESIDENTALLION (ML=6/1), #4 REAL BLESSING (ML=8/1),

BUGSY LOSTY - I can't play this confirmed non-winner. Gets the task fulfilled infrequently. This chalk horse ran on May 24th and hasn't had a workout since then. THEPRESIDENTALLION - This horse ran a common speed rating last race out. He shouldn't show signs of improvement and will probably suffer defeat in today's event running that figure. REAL BLESSING - Tough to bet on any racer to turn things around if there is no reward to taking the risk. This horse will probably need at least one more start after the lackluster showing following the very long layoff. This steed ran a most unsatisfactory speed figure in the last race. He shouldn't improve and will likely lose in today's race running that rating.

Play #3 WAR HITCH to win if you can get odds of 9/5 or more

Preview: Rockies (34-35) at Dodgers (37-34)

Game: 1
Venue: Dodger Stadium
Date: June 16, 2014 10:10 PM EDT

The Colorado Rockies have gone from spiraling to surging in less than a week.

A three-game series at Chavez Ravine could keep them rolling.

Charlie Blackmon and Troy Tulowitzki look to continue pacing the Rockies' turnaround Monday night when they open this three-game set with the Los Angeles Dodgers, one of the worst home teams in baseball.

Colorado (34-35) was six games over .500 before losing 15 of 18 during which it batted .241 and scored 3.4 runs per game while the rotation posted a 6.36 ERA.

But the Rockies are putting that dreadful stretch behind them, winning a season-high five straight behind a .325 average, 7.6 runs per contest and a 3.60 ERA from the starters.

"It's amazing, last week at this time we're in the dumps," closer LaTroy Hawkins said. "Now we're on a high. It can turn around just like this."

Impressive production from Blackmon and Tulowitzki is also helping.

Blackmon is 9 for 17 with three doubles, one homer, four RBIs and five runs in four games, while Tulowitzki is 7 for 12 over his last four.

They had three hits apiece, and Tulowitzki connected for a two-run homer as Colorado came from behind for the third consecutive game Sunday in an 8-7 win at major league-leading San Francisco to complete a three-game sweep.

'It was a great three games here,' manager Walt Weiss said. 'We kept it together and came up with big-time clutch hits."

Tulowitzki, nursing a sore toe, leads the majors with a .362 average and tops the Rockies with 18 homers and 45 RBIs, one more than Blackmon. However, he's batting .133 over his last 12 games at Los Angeles.

The Dodgers, though, are 15-20 at home, ranking only better than Arizona's major league-worst 12-24 mark.

Los Angeles (37-34) failed to finish a three-game sweep of the Diamondbacks, falling 6-3 on Sunday.

Hyun-jin Ryu (7-3, 3.33 ERA) will try to help the Dodgers bounce back. He had a personal four-start streak snapped Wednesday at Cincinnati, allowing four runs and six hits over six innings in a 5-0 loss.

The left-hander is 2-0 with a 3.38 ERA in his past two home starts after going 0-2 with a 9.00 ERA in his first three.

Ryu has struggled in two of three home starts versus Colorado, compiling a 5.40 ERA. Blackmon is 5 for 7 with a double against him, while Tulowitzki is 3 for 8.

Ryu gave up six runs over five innings in a 6-1 loss to the Rockies at Dodger Stadium on April 27.

The Rockies will counter with Tyler Matzek, who is looking to build on a very impressive major league debut.

The left-hander retired the first 13 hitters and pitched two-hit ball for the first seven innings Wednesday against Atlanta before faltering in the eighth. He was charged with two runs and five hits while striking out seven in seven-plus innings of an 8-2 win.

This time, he'll take the mound in front of family and friends since Dodger Stadium is roughly an hour away from his hometown of Mission Viejo, California.

"It's great," Matzek told the team's official website. "I'm going to have plenty of people there, a lot of family and friends who are going to make it up there. It's good to have that support system there for me."

Will Phillies, Rays be sellers before deadline?
June 16, 2014

Jimmy Rollins became the Philadelphia Phillies' career hits leader last week.

The question now is how much longer Rollins will be suiting up for the only major league team he's known.

With the Phillies at the bottom of the NL East, general manager Ruben Amaro Jr. may be tempted to move some of his top veterans and start the rebuilding process in earnest. As the trade deadline approaches at the end of next month, the spotlight will be on teams that have fallen out of contention - because they might still have valuable players they can swap for talented prospects.

Philadelphia could be the best example. Even at 35, Rollins has been solid at shortstop, and second baseman Chase Utley may be the team's best hitter.

''I can't say there are any untouchables,'' Amaro told reporters recently. ''Some guys are less touchable than others, so to speak.''

Rollins and Utley have been with the Phillies their whole careers, and they have veto rights on any trade. Right-hander Cliff Lee and closer Jonathan Papelbon may be more likely to go if Amaro decides to break up the roster.

Of course, the underwhelming Atlanta Braves and Washington Nationals are complicating matters. Neither of the division's favorites has been able to pull away, so right now the Phillies - as poorly as they've played - are only 6 1/2 games behind the first-place Braves.

The Chicago Cubs, meanwhile, are 11 1/2 back in the NL Central, so right-hander Jeff Samardzija could be elsewhere before too long. The floundering San Diego Padres can offer closer Huston Street, who has yet to blow a save in 2014.

The most surprising sellers might be the Tampa Bay Rays, who have been in the postseason four of the last six years but have plummeted to last place in the AL East. Star pitcher David Price, who can become a free agent after the 2015 season, has been the subject of trade speculation for a while. He'd be one of the top names on the market if available.

Here are five things to watch around the majors this week:

CENTRAL SHOWDOWN: The Kansas City Royals have won seven straight and trail Detroit by 1 1/2 games atop the AL Central. The Tigers won the season's first five meetings between the teams by a combined 32-12, but Detroit has looked increasingly beatable lately. The Royals begin a four-game series in Motown on Monday night.

MARQUEE MATCHUP: Tim Hudson (1.81 ERA) of San Francisco faces Chris Sale of the White Sox (1.97) on Wednesday afternoon in Chicago. Sale has 68 strikeouts and nine walks on the year.

ROLE REVERSAL: From 1987-93, the Toronto Blue Jays finished ahead of the New York Yankees in the standings every year - but that hasn't happened since. First-place Toronto now leads New York by 4 1/2 games in the AL East, with a three-game series at Yankee Stadium set to start Tuesday night.

BEST OF THE BUNCH?: The Braves and Nationals may not have separated themselves from the rest of their division so far, but the sense is that they're still the most likely postseason candidates in the NL East. They begin a four-game series in Washington on Thursday night.

RISING STAR?: The debate over who is the National League's best catcher has centered on Buster Posey of San Francisco and Yadier Molina of St. Louis. But Jonathan Lucroy is quietly emerging as a standout for NL Central-leading Milwaukee. He's currently second in the league with a .336 average.

STAT OF THE WEEK: Atlanta closer Craig Kimbrel has struck out 431 hitters in 254 2-3 career innings. For context, consider that when Nolan Ryan set baseball's modern single-season strikeout record in 1973, he fanned 383 in 326 innings.
