KEY STAT: Sporting Gijon's win over Atletico Madrid ended an eight-match winless run

EXPERT VERDICT: Sporting Gijon should have gone into the break on a high, but they have proved to be poor travellers this season and have taken just four points from their last 11 games on the road. So side with Levante, who have won four of their last six home matches. The two they didn't win were against Barcelona and Real Madrid.

KEY STAT: Bologna have drawn four of their last five home fixtures

EXPERT VERDICT: Basement boys Verona need a string of wins to escape the drop but have managed only two in the league all season and may have to settle for a point at mid-table Bologna. Thirteen of Verona's 30 Serie A games have finished all square and they can hold their own against a Bologna side which hasn't won since mid-February.

NHL notebook: Kings call up Gravel
By The Sports Xchange

The Los Angeles Kings recalled defenseman Kevin Gravel from the Ontario Reign of the American Hockey League, the team announced Sunday.
The 24-year-old Gravel appeared in four games during his first NHL call-up in February, including his first NHL game on Feb. 11. He is still looking for his first NHL point.

--The Calgary Flames assigned forward Emile Poirier to the Stockton Heat of the American Hockey League.
Poirier, 21, has played in two games for the Flames, with two penalty minutes.

--Chicago Blackhawks goalie Corey Crawford worked out on the ice for the second consecutive day before Sunday's game. Crawford has missed the past nine games because of an upper-body injury, but the team hopes to have him available for the playoffs.

--Boston Bruins defenseman Kevan Miller missed Sunday's game because of a lower-body injury that he sustained Friday against St. Louis.

--Pittsburgh Penguins center Evgeni Malkin, still out indefinitely, missed a 12th consecutive game with an upper-body injury.

--Penguins rookie goalie Matt Murray started for the second day in a row because G Marc-Andre Fleury is out indefinitely with his second concussion of the season.

--Philadelphia Flyers goalie Steve Mason played for a second successive day and the eighth time in 15 days because of backup goalie Michal Neuvirth's lower-body injury.

Preview: Lightning (45-28) at Islanders (42-26)

Date: April 04, 2016 7:00 PM EDT

Tampa Bay Lightning captain Steven Stamkos delivered a harsh message about his team's effort prior to its last game. Ahead of the next one, he had words of encouragement for his team's push without him.

After learning Stamkos will miss one to three months with a blood clot in his right arm, the Lightning look to continue pressing for the Atlantic Division title when they open a season-ending road trip Monday night against the New York Islanders, who are scrapping for a playoff spot.

Tampa Bay (45-28-5) picked up a huge 3-1 win over New Jersey on Saturday to go 4-2-0 on its homestand and remain within two points of division-leading Florida.

The optimism surrounding the successful stretch was quickly forgotten, however, with the news that Stamkos will be out for the foreseeable future with a type of vascular thoracic syndrome near his right collarbone. He's scheduled to have a procedure Monday.

General manager Steve Yzerman said a full recovery is expected and the team doesn't expect the injury to be career threating.

It will be a couple weeks before it's clear if Stamkos' recovery time will be closer to one month or three. He voiced his disappointment Saturday, just days after telling his teammates to "look in the mirror" following a 3-0 loss to Montreal on Thursday.

"Obviously, this situation is extremely disappointing because I wanted to help my team clinch a playoff spot and prepare for the start of the postseason," Stamkos told the league's official website. "During my recovery, I will do all I can to help my teammates, and I hope to rejoin them soon in the Stanley Cup playoffs."

Stamkos leads Tampa Bay with 36 goals. Nikita Kucherov scored and had two assists against the Devils, but the Lightning totaled eight goals in the final four games of the homestand after scoring 13 in the first two.

They are also missing top-pair defenseman Anton Stralman, who's out indefinitely with a fractured left fibula.

Still, the victory over the Devils clinched the first tiebreaker for Tampa Bay over the Panthers with 42 regulation and overtime wins.

Seven Tampa Bay players scored in a 7-4 victory over the Islanders on March 25, snapping a three-game skid in this series. The Lightning have lost seven of the last eight road matchups.

New York (42-26-9) followed that ugly loss to the Lightning with three consecutive wins before falling 5-0 to Pittsburgh on Saturday. The Islanders are in a tight race for a wild-card spot and also trail the Rangers by two points for the Metropolitan's third automatic berth.

Captain John Tavares delivered his own strong message after Saturday's loss, which was lowlighted by two goals on power plays and three off turnovers.

'Considering where everything stands right now, that kind of effort is unacceptable," he said. "It's extremely disappointing.'

The Islanders, 24-10-4 at Barclays Center, are also banged up with defenseman Travis Hamonic, center Mikhail Grabovski and goaltender Jaroslav Halak out.

Thomas Greiss has handled most of the work in net in Halak's absence. He's allowed four goals on 51 shots his last two starts after surrendering six on 41 to the Lightning.

Tampa Bay's Ben Bishop allowed seven goals over this season's first two matchups.

Preview: Rangers (43-26) at Blue Jackets (31-39)

Date: April 04, 2016 7:00 PM EDT

The sound of boos cascading down from the Madison Square Garden crowd doesn't exactly breed confidence for the New York Rangers as they look to clinch a postseason spot in the season's final week.

Maybe a shift to the road Monday night will help them finally secure their sixth straight playoff berth when they go for a sweep of the last-place Columbus Blue Jackets.

The Rangers (43-26-9) are 0 for 2 in attempts to clinch with a win against teams with essentially no chance to make the postseason, falling 4-3 on the road to Carolina on Thursday and by the same score at home to Buffalo on Saturday.

The loss to the young Sabres was New York's third straight, and it was accompanied by the MSG faithful voicing their displeasure. Two nights after blowing a third-period lead against the Hurricanes, the Rangers surrendered three early goals and Henrik Lundqvist was pulled less than 21 minutes in.

It leaves them with a two-point lead for the Metropolitan Division's third and final automatic playoff berth, with a tight three-team race for the Eastern Conference's two wild-card spots the next alternative.

New York has one final shot to clinch against a team out of the postseason hunt in its last road game before closing the season at home against Tampa Bay on Tuesday, the Islanders on Thursday and Detroit on Saturday. The Rangers are 18-17-5 away from home, losing three of their last four.

'We know down the stretch teams are trying to finish on a high note,' captain Ryan McDonagh said. 'It doesn't matter where you are.'

Buffalo's win snapped a nine-game losing streak against the Rangers, and Columbus (31-39-8) is looking to end a six-game skid in this series.

New York - mired in its first regulation losing streak since going three straight without a point Dec. 17-20 - has won the first three meetings this season and taken four straight over Columbus at home, with points in the last five.

'Again, as a goalie but also as a team, we need short memories,' said Lundqvist, who gave up three goals on nine shots before being replaced by Antti Raanta.

Lundqvist earned wins on back-to-back days over Columbus in early October, allowing four goals on 72 shots. He's won his last five starts against the Blue Jackets with a 1.78 goals-against average.

Columbus' Sergei Bobrovsky was in net for both October matchups, allowing four goals in each. While Lundqvist is 8-3-1 all-time versus Columbus, Bobrovsky is 3-8-2 against the Rangers to give him his highest loss total against any opponent.

The last-place Blue Jackets, 17-16-6 at Nationwide Arena, snapped a four-game skid with Saturday's 5-1 road win over Carolina.

Brandon Saad recorded his first career hat trick while Boone Jenner and Oliver Bjorkstrand also scored. Alexander Wennberg and David Savard had two assists apiece.

'It seems more or less the past few nights, it's been happening against us,' Saad said. 'So to get one of these nights and get confidence and get a couple guys scoring different goals and making big plays, it was a lot of fun to be a part of.'

Preview: Panthers (44-25) at Maple Leafs (28-39)

Date: April 04, 2016 7:30 PM EDT

Jaromir Jagr hasn't been clean-shaven in a while. It's likely no coincidence that the same can be said about Jonathan Huberdeau, his Florida Panthers' linemate.

Put simply, if Jagr does something, the Panthers notice.

And that will especially ring true starting next week, when the long-struggling Panthers return to the playoffs for just the second time in the past 15 seasons.

Florida's postseason berth was clinched Sunday when Boston lost to Chicago, and the Panthers now find themselves on the brink of securing home-ice advantage for at least the opening round.

They can clinch that by earning at least one point against the eliminated Toronto Maple Leafs in Monday night's opener to a three-game Canadian trip.

The Panthers (44-25-9) have played 38 postseason games, total, as a franchise. They've won 16, and it's the first trip to the playoffs for young Panthers stars such as Huberdeau, Aaron Ekblad, Aleksander Barkov, Vincent Trocheck and Nick Bjugstad.

"We're going to rely on him," Huberdeau said, nodding toward where Jagr was standing after Florida rallied from a 3-0 deficit to beat Montreal 4-3 on Saturday night. '"Not too much, but he's going to be the guy to look up to and he's going to be the guy to help us - especially those of us who don't know what it's like.

"It's his 18th time in the playoffs. My first time. He's not scared of the playoffs."

What will Jagr tell the first-timers?

"I'm not going to make a big deal about it," Jagr said. "Just play the same way. Why stress yourself if you don't have to? No matter what you say, you have to go through it. You have to feel it."

Jagr has played in 202 playoff games, has been part of 110 wins and is a two-time Stanley Cup winner - both of those hoists of hockey's chalice coming before the Panthers' franchise even played its first game.

There's other Cup winners on Florida's roster, including injured captain Willie Mitchell (whose career is in jeopardy because of concussions), defenseman Brian Campbell, wingers Shawn Thornton and Jiri Hudler and injured forward Dave Bolland.

But if one skater will set the tone in the second season for Florida, it's Jagr.

"That's no different than what he's doing now," Panthers coach Gerard Gallant said. "He does a good job with our guys, he's our leader and we've got a lot of good veteran leadership. I don't expect him to change one thing. We've got a lot of guys who have won Stanley Cups, a lot of veteran guys and a lot of young guys who haven't tasted it yet."

How they'll fare in the playoffs is anyone's guess, but these are not the same old Panthers.

Florida has not won a playoff series since 1996, making the Stanley Cup final that year but getting knocked out in the first round in 1997, 2000 and 2012.

It took general manager Dale Tallon - who is credited for building the core of the Chicago team that has won three of the past six Stanley Cups - time to get a real plan in place for Florida, but his moves have clearly worked.

The Panthers set club records this season with a 12-game winning streak, four All-Star representatives, five 50-point scorers and 44 victories. With four games left, they're on pace to have the best team goals-against average in franchise history as well.

Florida has outscored opponents 19-9 while winning four of five on the road, including a 4-1 victory in Toronto on March 17 - its third in a row at Air Canada Centre. The Panthers lost 5-2 to the visiting Leafs (28-39-11) on Tuesday, their only defeat in the past five overall contests.

Florida has a two-point lead atop the Atlantic Division over Tampa Bay, which visits the New York Islanders on Monday.

The win over Florida was Toronto's lone one in its last five games.

Nazem Kadri, who registered his third career hat trick last week in Florida, will reportedly have a hearing with the league after cross-checking Detroit's Luke Glendening in the head/shoulder in the second period of Saturday's 3-2 loss.

"We were battling in the corner and got into a bit of a wrestling match," Kadri said. "I think my cross-check kind of rode up on his shoulder a little bit. That's a penalty for sure."

The playoffs start April 13, though Florida likely cannot be at home that night because a concert was scheduled for its home arena that date.

Most years, that wouldn't be a problem.

Now, it's a nice problem for the Panthers to have.

Preview: Coyotes (35-36) at Blues (47-23)

Date: April 04, 2016 8:00 PM EDT

After an uncharacteristic performance to start this weekend, the St. Louis Blues returned to their stingy ways to close it out but might have lost one of their goaltenders.

With Jake Allen's status unknown for upcoming games, the Blues will try to bolster their Central Division title hopes Monday night by adding to their recent mastery of the Arizona Coyotes.

St. Louis (47-23-9) has outscored opponents 25-8 during a 6-1-0 run and gave up six of those goals in a loss to Boston on Friday. The Blues bounced back with a 5-1 victory in Colorado on Sunday and were 4:15 shy of their fifth shutout since March 18.

Anders Nilsson was in net for the final two periods after Allen's undisclosed injury and helped St. Louis move within two points of Western Conference-leading Dallas, which is idle Monday.

"We'll know a little more on Jake (on Monday)," coach Ken Hitchcock said. "Hopefully, it's day to day."

The Blues are four points ahead of Chicago for home-ice advantage in the opening round of the playoffs but don't hold the non-shootout wins tiebreaker. They also trail in that category against the Stars.

"We know what's in front of us. We know what's behind us," defenseman Alex Pietrangelo said. "But the biggest thing for us is worrying about ourselves. If we play like we can, we're going to put ourselves in a good position. We want to make sure we're going full speed going to the playoffs."

Nilsson was the Blues' backup because Brian Elliott was back in St. Louis, reportedly resting up for this game. Elliott was pulled after two periods against Boston but did not receive the loss, putting him at 9-0-0 with a 1.92 goals-against average in his last 11 appearances.

Elliott is 4-0-0 with a 1.29 GAA and three shutouts since returning from a lower-body injury March 19. He yielded four goals on 22 shots in Arizona on Feb. 20, but St. Louis exited with a 6-4 victory, its seventh in a row over the Coyotes.

The Blues are also 10-0-1 in their last 11 matchups and 5-0-1 in their past six at home, winning the past three.

The Coyotes (35-36-7) are averaging a league-worst 1.7 goals in their last 16 road games and lost 4-1 to Dallas in their latest Thursday. They have won four of six overall, however, after a 3-0 victory against Presidents' Trophy-winning Washington on Saturday.

Mike Smith registered his second shutout since returning from a lower-body injury March 12 and improved to 5-2-0 with a 1.29 GAA in his last seven starts.

"It was important for me personally, coming off the injury and not playing a lot, to come back and show myself and the team and the organization that I can still play when I'm healthy," Smith told the team's official website. "It was our last home game and we played really well against the best team in the league."

Smith has a 3.90 GAA in his six consecutive losses to St. Louis.

Blues forward Alexander Steen has four goals and seven assists in a seven-game point streak against the Coyotes. He has also scored a goal in each of his past three matchups.

Blues captain David Backes' 13 goals and 18 assists in his last 27 games in the series are his most versus any opponent since the beginning of the 2008-09 season.

Preview: Kings (46-27) at Canucks (29-36)

Date: April 04, 2016 10:00 PM EDT

With the Pacific Division title and home-ice advantage hanging in the balance, the Los Angeles Kings have picked the wrong time to go into a late-season swoon.

A lack of consistent scoring has been partly to blame, though that hasn't been much of a problem over the Kings' past few meetings with the Vancouver Canucks.

Looking to take a big step toward its first division crown in 25 years, Los Angeles will try to avoid its fifth straight road loss and sixth in eight games overall Monday night.

The Kings owned a six-point lead in the Pacific on March 19 following a 6-0-1 stretch that began with a 5-1 home win over the Canucks. However, they've since fallen back into a neck-and-neck race with Anaheim and San Jose as a result of their current slump.

Los Angeles, which hasn't won a division title since 1990-91, was all but eliminated from the chase for the Western Conference's top seed on Saturday when it couldn't hold to a third-period lead in a 3-2 home loss to Central Division-best Dallas. The club has scored two goals or fewer in six of its last eight games after totaling 24 over its previous six.

"I hope it's not a lesson that we have to learn this late in the season, but hopefully it's a better late than never type of thing," defenseman Rob Scuderi said. "All of these games now, and in a couple of weeks, they're going to be one-goal games, it's going to be tight."

The Kings hope to take advantage of a soft final stretch. They'll face Vancouver and Calgary on the road before returning to Staples Center for a showdown with the Ducks on Thursday, then close versus another eliminated club in Winnipeg.

Jeff Carter has totaled five goals and eight points over his last five games. He had two goals while Anze Kopitar added a goal and two assists in last month's win over Vancouver.

Carter did not play Dec. 28 when Tyler Toffoli finished with a hat trick and Kopitar had a career high-tying four assists in a 5-0 win at Vancouver (29-36-13). Kopitar has totaled two goals and six assists while helping the Kings (46-27-5) take three of the four meetings.

The Canucks ranked 23rd in the league with 2.86 goals allowed per game after getting outscored 28-8 over an 0-8-1 slide. However, they played better defensively while helping the Kings with a 4-2 win at San Jose on Thursday and a 3-2 victory at Anaheim on Friday.

'I think we just have to stick together as a team and play our hearts out the last couple games," said goalie Jacob Markstrom, who is expected to give way to Ryan Miller. "We have nothing to lose.'

Bo Horvat has provided a spark with a goal in each of the past two games, while Henrik Sedin has recorded an assist in both contests and three in this series with the Kings.

Vancouver, though, has totaled six goals over a five-game home skid. It looks to reverse that trend against Los Angeles, which has lost a season-high four straight road games.

Jonathan Quick has been dominant against the Canucks, going 9-3-1 with a 1.07 goals-against average to go along with a .959 save percentage over his last 13 meetings.

Grand Salami - April

The Grand Salami in pro hockey is decided by adding up all the goals scored in every game scheduled for that particular day. You can wager on 'over' or 'under' the Grand Salami total. The total is set by adding up all listed 'over/under' odds for each game on that particular day.

Note: The Grand Salami will have no action if any game is suspended or cancelled before the regulation time of three twenty minute periods. Also, regardless of the number of goals scored during the shoot out portion of the overtime, the final scored recorded for the game will give the winning team on more goal than its opponent based on the score at the end of regulation time.

*The majority of sportsbooks do not put out a total on the Grand Salami when there is only one game on the card. For tracking purposes, we will continue to show the 'over/under' for goals and combined goals scored on days with just one game.

NBA notebook: Pippen: '96 Bulls would sweep Warriors
By The Sports Xchange

Hall of Famer Scottie Pippen, who played on the 1995-96 Chicago Bulls that set the NBA record for most victories in a single season, evidently doesn't think the Golden State Warriors would match up in a hypothetical series between the two teams.
Pippen told "Dan Patrick Show" producer Paul Pabst on Saturday that the 1995-96 Bulls would sweep the Warriors and he would have held Warriors star Steph Curry under 20 points.
"Bulls in four (games)," Pippen said.
The 50-year-old Pippen was offered a chance to clarify his prediction against the Warriors and was asked whether he thought the Bulls would have an off-night against Golden State.
"I don't think we'd take a night off," Pippen told Pabst.

--The Charlotte Hornets recalled guard Aaron Harrison from the Erie BayHawks of the NBA Development League.
Harrison has averaged 21.3 points, 4.3 rebounds, 2.0 assists and 1.3 steals in nine games (seven starts) while on assignment with Erie, scoring a D-League career-high 34 points against Canton on March 26.

--New York Nets center Brook Lopez will not play for the rest of the season, ending his eighth NBA season having played in 73 games.
Lopez said Brooklyn general manager Sean Marks called him Tuesday to say the decision was precautionary.
Besides Lopez, the Nets also are shutting down forward Thaddeus Young for the rest of the season.

North Carolina opens slight fave over Villanova for national championship

March Madness has now rolled into April, and we’re down to No. 1 seed North Carolina and No. 2 seed Villanova. The two teams will square off for the NCAA Tournament title Monday night at Houston’s NRG Stadium, where both coasted to Final Four victories Saturday night.

Villanova’s win was extremely impressive. The Wildcats went off as 2.5-point chalk against fellow No. 2 seed Oklahoma, but made the Sooners look like a one-legged man in a butt-kicking contest in a 95-51 shellacking. After leading by 14 at the half, ‘Nova (34-5 SU, 20-17-1 ATS) spanked the Sooners 53-23 in the final 20 minutes.

North Carolina (33-6 SU, 20-18-1 ATS) wasn’t quite that impressive, but the Tar Heels shot nearly 54 percent from the floor and got more easy buckets than you could count in an 83-66 win as a 10-point favorite.

The oddsmakers certainly expect the Heels to get a stiffer test from the Wildcats. John Lester, senior lines manager , says his shop opened Carolina at -2, with the total at 151.

“It really does feel like we've got the two best, most complete teams in the tournament facing off for the national title,” Lester said. “This was somewhat of a difficult line to create because, save for one game, the wiseguys have been backing Villanova throughout the dance, while the Tar Heels have had heavy support from the squares. Public perception dictates North Carolina being the favorite.”

Jason Simbal, vice president of risk management for CG Technology, which operates several Las Vegas sportsbooks, said his shop set the initial number just a tick lower. But Tar Heels bettors didn’t let it stay that way for long.

“We opened North Carolina -1.5, which is the look-ahead line we had up all week,” Simbal said. “When the games ended today, they bet Carolina and we moved it to 2. We’ve got four times more money on the Tar Heels as of this moment.”

Both of Saturday’s games cleared the total, with Villanova-Oklahoma going a bucket over 144 and North Carolina-Syracuse topping the 142.5 total by 6.5 points. Simbal said CG pegged the championship game total slightly higher than Bookmaker, at 152.

“We’ve gotten some small bets on the over, but not enough to move the number.”

Villanova vs. North Carolina: NCAA Championship betting preview

No. 2 Villanova Wildcats vs. No. 1 North Carolina Tar Heels (-2.5, 149.5)

Game to be played at NRG Stadium, Houston, TX

Villanova is fresh off the biggest blowout in Final Four history and aims to carry the momentum into Monday's national championship contest when it faces top-seeded North Carolina at Houston's NRG Stadium. The second-seeded Wildcats rolled to a 95-51 victory over Oklahoma on Saturday and attempt to etch their names alongside the school's famous 1985 title-winning squad that upset Georgetown in the NCAA championship game.

The Tar Heels have posted five straight double-digit victories in the tournament and are vying for the sixth national championship in school history. "We got to go out there and play our game," senior forward Brice Johnson said after Saturday's 83-66 victory over Syracuse. "Those guys are a very good team. They're really hot right now. They held one of the best players in the country (Oklahoma guard Buddy Hield, nine points) to little or nothing." Villanova's stunning 44-point victory boosted its margin of victory in the tourney to 24.2 points and Wildcats coach Jay Wright understands the history in play. "Those guys are really icons on our campus, they really are," Wright said of the 1985 team led by post players Ed Pinckney and Howard Pressley. "That whole team brings that magical underdog feeling, like anything's possible."

TV: 9:19 p.m. ET, TBS

LINE HISTORY: North Carolina opened as two-point favorites immediately following their impressive Final Four victory over Syracuse. The action came in on the Tar Heels hard overnight Saturday and by Sunday morning the books were forced to move the line to -2.5. The total opened at 151 and was bet down to 149.5 by Sunday. Check out the complete line history here.

WHAT BOOKS SAY: “It really does feel like we've got the two best, most complete teams in the tournament facing off for the national title. This was somewhat of a difficult line to create because, save for one game, the wiseguys have been backing Villanova throughout the dance, while the Tar Heels have had heavy support from the squares. Public perception dictates North Carolina being the favorite.” - John Lester

ABOUT VILLANOVA (34-5, 20-17-1 ATS, 20-17-1 O/U): Junior guard Josh Hart was superb against Oklahoma by scoring 23 points on 10-of-12 shooting to fuel the Wildcats' torrid 71.4 percent shooting mark. Hart averages a team-high 15.5 points while teaming with two other stellar outside shooters in junior forward Kris Jenkins (13.6 average, team-high 98 3-pointers) and senior guard Ryan Arcidiacono (12.4 average, 74 3-pointers). Villanova is thin in the frontcourt compared to the Tar Heels and could use a strong performance from senior center Daniel Ochefu, who averages 10.1 points and leads the squad in rebounding (7.6) and blocked shots (55).

ABOUT NORTH CAROLINA (33-6, 20-18-1 ATS, 21-18 O/U): Johnson is the Tar Heels' top player with averages of 17 points and 10.5 rebounds and three other players average more than 12 points per game. Senior point guard Marcus Paige (12.3) has excelled from long range during the tournament by going 16-of-34 from 3-point range and he holds the school mark of 295 career 3-pointers. Sophomore guard Joel Berry II averages 12.6 points and sophomore forward Justin Jackson averages 12.3 while junior center Kennedy Meeks (9.4 points, 5.9 rebounds) has played well of late by making 16-of-22 shots over the past three contests.

TRENDS:

* Wildcats are 5-0 ATS in their last 5 NCAA Tournament games.
* Wildcats are 10-2 ATS in their last 12 games after scoring more than 90 points in their previous game.
* Tar Heels are 4-0 ATS in their last 4 NCAA Tournament games.
* Over is 6-1 in Wildcats last 7 vs. Atlantic Coast.
* Over is 10-2 in Wildcats last 12 games following a straight up win.
* Over is 7-1 in Tar Heels last 8 non-conference games.

CONSENSUS: The action was heavy on UNC early on but the line move to 2.5 seems to have leveled out the percentages with the Tar Heals currently taking 53% of the public opinion. 71% of the picks on the total are coming in on over 149.5.

Monday's Top Action

VILLANOVA WILDCATS (34-5) vs. NORTH CAROLINA TAR HEELS (33-6)

NCAA Championship Game – NRG Stadium – Houston, TX
Tip-off: Monday, 9:15 pm ET
Line: North Carolina -2.5, 151

Two of the best teams in college basketball finally clash when #2 Villanova faces #1 North Carolina in the NCAA Championship on Monday.

The Wildcats have been absolutely dominant throughout the NCAA tournament, winning-and-covering in all five of their games up to this point. Their Final Four matchup was actually the most lopsided, as Villanova pummeled Oklahoma 95-51 as a 2.5-point favorite on Saturday. T

he Wildcats shot 71.4% from the floor and held the Sooners to just 31.7%. If they can play that well on both ends of the floor then there is no way they will be denied a championship. North Carolina, however, has been pretty dominant as well.

The Tar Heels defeated Syracuse 83-66 as 10-point favorites on Saturday. It was the team’s fourth straight win-and-cover and North Carolina has won all five of its tournament games by double digits. These two teams have met just three times since 1997 and North Carolina is 3-0 SU and 2-1 ATS in those contests.

One thing that favors the Wildcats is that they are 19-5 ATS after allowing 65 points or less in two straight games over the past two seasons.

The Tar Heels, meanwhile, are 17-7 ATS in neutral court games in that span.

Villanova is coming off of a dominant performance over Oklahoma in the Final Four and one guy that really stepped it up was G Josh Hart (15.5 PPG, 6.7 RPG, 1.2 SPG). Hart finished the game with 23 points, eight rebounds, four assists and two steals and was 10-for-12 from the floor. He will need to find a way to be just as effective against a Tar Heels team that is loaded with talented wing players.

G Ryan Arcidiacono (12.4 PPG, 4.3 RPG, 1.4 SPG) will also be counted on in a big way on Monday. Arcidiacono had 15 points in the win over Oklahoma on Saturday, but he’ll need to be even better on both ends of the floor on Monday. If he does not win his matchup with Marcus Paige then it’s very unlikely that the Wildcats will be crowned champions when this game is over.

F Kris Jenkins (13.6 PPG, 3.9 RPG) is another guy that will need to make a huge impact from the wing. Jenkins is a big guy, but he is a 38.4% shooter from the outside and is 15-for-31 from three on the tournament.

If he can make shots on Monday then it’ll stretch the floor and allow C Daniel Ochefu (10.1 PPG, 7.6 RPG, 1.5 BPG) to go to work in the paint. Ochefu will have to be effective in this one, as the Wildcats can’t afford to get slaughtered in the points in the paint battle. That means he’ll also need to step it up defensively against an incredible North Carolina frontcourt.

Although Villanova is coming off of the 44-point victory, North Carolina has also been a force in this tournament. The reason the Tar Heels have been winning games so easily is their play in the paint.

Fs Brice Johnson (17.0 PPG, 10.5 RPG, 1.5 BPG, 1.1 SPG) and Kennedy Meeks (9.4 PPG, 5.9 RPG, 1.1 BPG) have just been too much to handle for other teams. Johnson is averaging 20.0 PPG, 9.6 RPG and 3.0 BPG through five games in this tournament.

He has done whatever he has wanted to around the basket offensively and he is a menace on the boards. If he can freely play his game on Monday then the Tar Heels will likely win the championship.

Meeks, meanwhile, is a big body that knows how to score around the basket. His play has taken a ton of pressure off of Johnson, but he’ll need to play well defensively in this one.

The x-factors in this game will, however, be G Marcus Paige (12.3 PPG, 3.7 APG, 1.2 SPG) and F Justin Jackson (12.3 PPG, 3.9 RPG). If Paige and Jackson can provide some scoring on the perimeter then the Tar Heels are likely going to win this one.

This team is too difficult to stop around the basket and Villanova won’t be able to win if it has to deal with a Tar Heels group that is clicking on all cylinders.

Villanova vs. North Carolina
By Brian Edwards

Villanova and North Carolina cruised to easy victories Saturday in perhaps the most boring set of national-semifinal games in the NCAA Tournament’s storied history. Not boring because of ‘Nova or UNC, however, just uneventful in the way they coasted to blowout wins over Oklahoma and Syracuse, respectively.

Jay Wright’s team went five years without playing beyond the first weekend of the Tournament, but it will play for the national title Monday night for the first time since Rollie Massimino’s team led by Ed Pinckney shocked Patrick Ewing and Georgetown in the 1985 finals at Rupp Arena in Lexington, KY.

Roy Williams is seeking to join an elite group of head coaches who have three or more national titles to their credit. That group includes John Wooden, Adolph Rupp, Bobby Knight, Mike Krzyzewski and Jim Calhoun.

This is Williams’s fifth trip to the Monday night game in his career. He took Kansas to the finals twice, losing both times to Duke (’91) and Syracuse (’03). He has gone 2-0 in the finals with UNC since leaving Lawrence for Chapel Hill.

This is UNC’s 10th trip to the finals in the program’s illustrious history. Williams has the second-best career NCAA Tournament record among active coaches, going 70-23 (75.3%). Wright is 19-12 in the Tournament (61.3%).

The Westgate SuperBook opened North Carolina (33-6 straight up, 20-18-1 against the spread) as a two-point favorite with a total of 151.5 points late last night in Las Vegas. In less than an hour, Jay Kornegay and Co. moved the Tar Heels to 2.5.

As of mid-afternoon Sunday, UNC was a 2.5-point ‘chalk’ with a total of 150. UNC is -150 on the money line, leaving ‘Nova at +130 to win outright (risk $100 to win $130).

Villanova (34-5 SU, 20-17-1 ATS) captured a 95-51 win over Oklahoma as a 2.5-point favorite in the biggest blowout in Final Four history. The Wildcats led by 14 at intermission and the Sooners quickly trimmed the deficit to nine on a Jordan Woodard putback of his own missed free throw.

Lon Kruger’s bunch would get no closer, though. The Wildcats stretched the lead to 21 with 11:19 remaining on a 3-pointer by Phil Booth. They led by 33 at the under-8 TV timeout and it was over.

Josh Hart had a game for the ages, scoring 23 points on 10-of-12 shooting in 30 minutes of playing time. The junior guard also had eight rebounds, two steals and four assists without a turnover. Kris Jenkins was sensational as well, producing 18 points, eight boards, two steals and one blocked shot.

Ryan Arcidiacono, the senior point guard and lifeblood of Wright’s program for the last four seasons, finished with 15 points on just six shots from the field. Arcidiacono drained 3-of-4 launches from downtown and had three rebounds and three assists.

Mikal Bridges (11), Booth (10) and Daniel Ochefu (10) were also in double figures. Ocheful had six rebounds, three assists, one steal, one rejection and didn’t commit a turnover.

How ‘on’ was Villanova? Well, it made 35-of-49 shots from the field at a torrid 71.4 percent clip. Depth perception at NRG Stadium in Houston was not an issue whatsoever. The Wildcats hit 11-of-18 shots from beyond the arc (61.1%).

On the flip side, OU made just 6-of-27 (22.2%) from 3-point land. The Sooners entered the game with the nation’s second-best three-point shooting percentage (42.1%).

Villanova’s stifling defense limited Buddy Hield, a first-team All-American, to his second-lowest scoring output of the season with only nine points.

Hield buried his first 3-point attempt, but he missed his next eight. He went 4-of-12 from the field, while Isaiah Cousins (3-of-14 FGs) and Woodard (3-of-10) were equally inept.

“Just credit them for what they were doing. Made it tough on me throwing multiple bodies at me,” Hield said at the postgame presser. Hield said the Wildcats were “one of the best teams I’ve ever played in college.”

Wright’s bunch has won four of its Tournament games by margins of 19 points or more. The Wildcats have covered the number in all five Tournament games, including their only close one in the 65-60 win over No. 1 overall seed Kansas in the Elite Eight. They have won their five games by an average margin of 23.6 points.

Meanwhile, UNC has won its five games by an average margin of 16.2 points. The Tar Heels have covered in four straight and won each game by a minimum of 14 points. The lone non-cover came in the opening round when they knocked off Fla. Gulf Coast by an 83-67 count as 22.5-point favorites.

North Carolina defeated Syracuse for a third time this year on Saturday, winning 83-66 as a 10-point favorite. The 149 combined points slipped ‘over’ the 142.5-point total.

Brice Johnson and Justin Jackson scored 16 points apiece for the winners. Johnson pulled down nine rebounds. Kennedy Meeks finished with 15 points, eight boards, two steals and two blocked shots, while Marcus Paige was also in double figures with 13 points. Joel Berry II had eight points and 10 assists compared to merely one turnover.

North Carolina has won 10 in a row while going 8-2 ATS. The Tar Heels made it to Houston by beating up on Providence (85-66), Indiana (101-86) and Notre Dame (88-74) after getting past Fla. Gulf Coast.

Johnson has been the catalyst, averaging 20.0 points and 9.6 rebounds per game. His overall averages for the year are 17.0 points and 10.5 RPG.

Villanova has been an underdog only twice this year, losing 86-75 at Virginia on Dec. 19 as a 5.5-point puppy. The other ‘dog spot came in the win over KU last weekend when it was catching two points from the Jayhawks.

UNC has thrived as a single-digit ‘chalk’ this season, compiling a 13-4 spread record, including eight consecutive covers in such situations.

These schools have met in the NCAA Tournament three times in the last 11 years. UNC has prevailed on each occasion. The Tar Heels won a 78-71 decision as a five-point favorite in the Round of 32 in 2013.

They collided at the Final Four in 2009 with North Carolina capturing an 83-69 triumph as a seven-point ‘chalk.’ In the 2005 Tournament, UNC advanced with a 67-66 victory, but the Wildcats easily took the money as 11-point underdogs.

The ‘over’ is 20-17-1 overall for the Wildcats after cashing at an 11-3 clip in their last 14 games.

The ‘over’ is 21-18 overall for UNC, hitting in three straight and four of its last five.

Tip-off is scheduled for 9:15 p.m. Eastern on TBS.

NCAA Tournament

Final Four, Houston

Since 1987, #1 seeds are 6-0 vs #2 seeds in a national final (4-2 against spread, covering last four). Villanova is 7th team since 1985 to win their national semifinal by 18+; in six finals that followed those wins, dogs were 5-1 against spread. North Carolina won its last ten games overall. Villanova won 10 of its last 11 games, losing by hoop to Seton Hall in Big East final. Villanova beat Oklahoma by 44, Miami by 23, Iowa by 19- they've hit their stride at right time. ACC, Big East teams split 12 games this season; favorites were 9-3 vs spread in those games. Carolina beat Villanova 78-71 in '13 first round NCAA game, making 11-21 on arc- Villanova was 4-21 on arc, but that was an 8-9 game in 2013.

'Final Dance'

The eyes of college basketball fans and those focused on college basketball betting will be on the 'Last Dance' as top-seed North Carolina and second-seed Villanova play for 'All The Marble'.

UNC breezing through the NCAA Tournament with an average winning margin of 16.2 points/game cashing four of five tickets roll into the Championship Game ridding a perfect 10-0 streak (8-2 ATS).

Nova steam-rolled its way to the 'Final Dance' defeating opponents by a whopping 24.2 points/game recording a perfect 5-0 mark against the betting line enter Monday night's Title Game 10-1 (7-4 ATS) the past eleven on the hardwood. Oddsmakers opened Tar Heels anywhere from -2.5 to -3.0 point favorite depending on local, with the over/under total set at 151.

The two schools have some recent NCAA Tournament history with the North Carolina on the way to titles nipped Villanova 67-66 in 2005 as 11-point chalk, 83-69 in 2009 as 7-point favorites. In the most recent Tourney meeting, Tar Heels defeated Wildcats 78-71 as 5-point favorite in the 2013 round of 64.

Always wise to use history as a guide, so here are some recent National Title Game and Tournament betting trends to ponder: Favorites are 8-5 ATS the past thirteen Championship Games, 6-3 ATS laying 5 or less. #1-Seed has cashed 4-of-5 vs. #2 Seed in Title games. Tar Heels 15-8 ATS in Tournament play since they last won the National Title (2009) including 12-3 ATS as #1-seed. Wildcats 6-3 ATS as #2 Seed in NCAA Tournament, 5-3 ATS last eight Tourney games in an underdog roll.
