Dodgers land closer Tanner Scott with 4-year, $72M, sources say.

Closer Tanner Scott and the Los Angeles Dodgers are in agreement on a four-year, $72 million contract, sources told ESPN's Jeff Passan on Sunday.
It's the latest offseason splash for the Dodgers, who are also signing prized Japanese pitching prospect Roki Sasaki, who announced the news on social media Friday.
Scott, 30, was 9-6 with 22 saves and a 1.75 ERA last season pitching for the Miami Marlins and San Diego Padres.
When Scott's deal is made official, the Dodgers' luxury tax payroll for 2025 will exceed $375 million, which is approximately $70 million more than the next-highest team, the Philadelphia Phillies.
The New York Yankees are the only other team with a competitive balance tax payroll projected to be over $300 million.

Blue Jays reach deal with free agent Max Scherzer.

Free-agent right-hander Max Scherzer and the Toronto Blue Jays have agreed to a one-year, $15.5 million contract, sources told ESPN's Jeff Passan on Thursday.
The future Hall of Famer, who turned 40 last July, is coming off an injury-plagued season with the Texas Rangers in which he made just nine starts and went 2-4 with a 3.95 ERA. He didn't make his first start until June 23 following surgery in the offseason to repair a herniated disk in his back. He then missed all of August with shoulder fatigue, returning to make one start in September before a hamstring injury ended his season.
Once a durable workhorse who made 30-plus starts each season from 2009 through 2018, Scherzer has now missed significant time each of the past three seasons, making 23 starts in 2022 while missing time with an oblique strain and making 27 starts in 2023 due to a strained shoulder and back spasms.

Jack Flaherty, Tigers agree on 2-year, $35 million deal, sources say.

Right-hander Jack Flaherty and the Detroit Tigers are in agreement on a two-year, $35 million contract that includes an opt-out after the first season, sources told ESPN's Jeff Passan on Sunday night.
Flaherty's deal will pay him $25 million this year, after which he can opt out, sources said. The guaranteed salary in 2026 is $10 million, and it can get as high as $20 million if he starts 15 games this season.
Flaherty returns to the Tigers after departing Detroit for the Los Angeles Dodgers at the trade deadline.
Flaherty's postseason performance with the Dodgers earned some attention around the league as he accomplished his goal last offseason: re-establish himself after an injury-marred, up-and-down career.
He reduced his regular-season ERA from 4.99 in 2023 to 3.17 last season, providing a big jump in production as he won games for the Tigers -- who made the postseason after trading him -- as well as the Dodgers, who won the World Series with his help.
In doing so, he earned a rare dual accomplishment: playoff shares from two teams.
Flaherty, 29, is young enough that he can still be considered an anchor in the rotation for his new team -- though he might not be a top-of-the-rotation guy. His previous best season was with the St. Louis Cardinals in 2019, when he led the National League in WHIP and fewest hits per nine innings pitched.
He has lost about 1 mph on his fastball since, but his secondary pitches are as good as ever. Like a lot of pitchers who play deep into October, Flaherty might have hit a wall this past postseason, giving up 19 earned runs in 24 innings, but he has proved durable over the past few years after experiencing several injuries earlier in his career.
