Mike Ditka talks Deflategate, Super Bowl distractions, the ’85 Bears and his pick:
1. Teams have found all sorts of ways to cheat in sports. Have you ever heard of anything like Deflategate?
“Guys used to put vaseline on their shirts so the defense couldn’t get a hold of them. A lot of guys did things to get a competitive advantage. Call me naive, but I don’t think they did it. Honestly, I just can’t believe that they would have done that. Now, maybe somebody took air out of the balls but I just don’t believe at this level that someone would stoop that low to cheat.
“The game is more important than anything. If this is what you have to do to win, then you should be punished and it should be severe. I don’t think the coach or the quarterback knew anything about it.”
2. Do you think this issue will affect Tom Brady or Bill Belichick?
“I think they are above that. I think if they’re innocent, they’re above that and it won’t affect them. Now, the Seattle Seahawks might affect them. But I don’t think this will.”
3. When your Bears played in Super Bowl XX, there were a lot of outside distractions. What did you tell your team to keep them focused on the game?
“You can’t control some of the outside distractions. We let the guys have fun up until Friday and Saturday night. If you have obligations to your families, friends—go ahead and take care of them. But Friday and Saturday, let’s get back to what we’re here for, and that’s the Super Bowl. Let’s concentrate on that. They were good about that. I’m not saying they didn’t go out and party the first couple days. They might have. That’s their business, they’re entitled to it. But I know one thing: They were ready to play football on Sunday and that’s all that mattered.”
4. Who do you like in the Super Bowl and why?
“Up until a week ago, I didn’t see how anybody could beat Seattle. But after seeing what New England did, they have a very good chance to win this football game. They’re doing things better. They’re running the ball better. They’re playing better on the defensive side of the ball. They’re doing a lot of things well.
“And, Green Bay should have won that game last week, that’s all I can tell you.
So, I’m going to pick the Patriots. But I’m never right, anyway, so it doesn’t matter.”

He rejinxed his own jinx so its okay. Go patriots! I had respect for the seahawks but I lost it when doug baldwin tried to pull a Richard shermen after the refs gave them the comeback win. Put him on revis island an then say that. I think seattle is ripe for the taking now. Cam Newton telegraphs every pass and was in position to make it a 3 pt game in the 4th qtr if not for a telegraphed pic 6. Seahawks are no where near as good as last year because they aren't getting to the quarterback as fast as they were last year. And when you face Tom Brady that is absolutely critical to get to him just like Peyton Manning. The public will always compare those 2 and fall into the trap of doing so when really one is a lot more hungry to win at 37 years old... if blount can do what Lacey did then it's over

that part is true
but the failure of most cappers is this:
pats barely beat the jets in 2 games this year
jets gashed them for over 100 yards each game including over 200 in the first
they knew the jets couldnt pass yet they give that much on the ground?
we are talking the jets with possibly the worst qb in the league
cheer all u want mob
but the pats aint stopping beast mode and when 60% of seattles plays are run plays they will run all over the pats
add wilsons legs to keep them guessing and this adds to maybe 300 yds on the ground alone.
2 sb were won that comes to mind with 2 terrible qbs but had great defenses
dilfer and that tb qb whatever his name was lol
point is sea has maybe the best d ever - they shut down the most prolific off last year. pats are nothing compared to ly broncos both on d and offense

Jets are a division rival. When the ravens won the super bowl they lost to the Jaguars with blaine gabbert. Lol. Pats still won both of those games.

barely but the jets should have won the last one. but games within a fg..against the jets?? c'mon man
when seattle won at home against the pats - the hawks were just learning things and they still won.
both times pats played the giants in the sb and lost. sure they had a great pass rush
seattles is not as good in that area
but if ur comparing last weeks game - the packers have a better o line and better team that pats.
packers kicked pats in gb when the pats were 'hot'
i would rank sea as #1 pack #2 #3 cowboys #4 pats
ppl make the mistake of capping games fresh in their mind wat they just saw.
seattle struggled pats looked like kings.
fact is for the full body of work
pats are a 13th rank d and sea is #1
sea is also up there in offense categories as well.
they have revis and browner, but who else?
they have no depth is why they are 13th ranked
without those 2 mentioned wat would they be? 24th?

Nah bro the patriots are deep at corner and linebacker this yr big time. Where are the pats fans? Arrington. Dennard. And they got another beast. They literrally have 5 good corners. Earl thomas is hurt btw. Akeem ayers. Collins. Hightower and Mayo. Pats D is sick bro. Pats are 10x better than lasr year

I'm riding with you Mob, I think Seattle is in for a rude awakening. NE has so many skill position players that can keep the chains moving, that D won't know who the ball is going to. I think NEs' D can hold their own and if Wilson turns it over at all, it could be a long day for Seattle. I also look for BB to go right at Sherman and Thomas with Blount to see what they've got. I think this game could easily get away from Seattle early and they are not playing Mike McCarthey.

lets not act like Seattle has to go up against stud QBs in their division though. kaep terrible year. St louis don't have a qb and Ryan Lindley. I'm just being real. No bias at all from me, I hate both teams just like last years superbowl so I got nothing swaying me, but I see this as a wayyy different game than last years super bowl. This one will be close I think.

He's has 5 restaurants now. I didn't realize he had that many. That 85 Super Bowl made a lot of people money.

By whose measurement?

This Seattle Defense, while good, is nowhere near the best Defense ever (and yes that best Defense ever would be Mike Ditka's and Buddy Ryan's Bears). Seattle has almost shut down some pretty pathetic offenses. I say almost. Where are the shutouts? Oh yea, none.

The Patriots will expose this defense like Green Bay was doing before McCarthy put them in baby curl fear mode. The Pats will take no such strategy defined by fear. This offense will keep the pressure on for 60 minutes no matter what the score. Seattle's only chance at victory will be to outscore the Pats.

If you think they can do that you may have a case. But to think Seattle's Defense will carry the team to victory is folly.

No way Seahawks will outscore the Pats. That will not happen.

You'll have quite a headline if Jerod Mayo plays as he has been on injured reserve since the sixth week of the season. Arguably, their best defender when healthy.
