Maybe that earlier email was not a spam. I did just receive an email from my Internet service provider explaining about the patches. It sent me to a web page (microsoft's) stating that the current problems did not affect windows 95 , 98 or 98se (the one I have). It went on to say that Microsoft would no longer be supporting those systems and to upgrade to a more current system.

I don't know what the hell to do. It went to say that at the least we users of those systems should install a firewall. (I bought one from McAfee and couldn't make it work.)

Am I one of the only people here with Windows 98se ? If you have 98se and a firewall tell me which one to buy.

How timely - I was just bitching yesterday about this stupid whirlpool drain on our money that Microsoft is with their lousy security problems and forcing people to pony up more cabbage to move to yet another buggy version of Windows - and here it's one day later and bang. Sorry, cannot answer your question, I've got Windows XP.

Personally windows XP is a good choice, with the proper softwre patch and service packs installed. If you are interested in a PC with XP I would be more than glad to provide you with the requirements for it to run smooth. If you don't have what it's needed it will make your life miserable.

Hundreds of factors will determine the speed of your machine. I was humouring the massive ammounts of entries that are posted in this site per minute.

I use IBM Thinkpad, windows 2000 profesional, 256ram, pII as well. Works like a beauty, for what I do at the office. Need more power at home in my studio.

Depends what you need it for.

Thanks zen for your comments. I'm basically vert happy with 98se and 128k. But worried. I know computer folks in general tend to have the latest and greatest . My worry is that 98se will become useless without Microsoft support!
I don't want a new computer.

Oldmantime, I hadn't heard that and if true it's disgusting. I run Win98SE on my laptop. Make sure you have the latest updates. The last one for 98SE or maybe it was IE6 is from August 2003, so I guess there's no support after that.

I run the free firewall from Zone Alarm: http://www.zonelabs.com/store/content/home.jsp. Its easy to set up and configure.

I'm also fortunate that my laptop came with Go Back installed http://www.symantec.com/goback/.

I've been very pleased with Go Back. Although it hogs some of the excessive space available on the hard drive it is most useful. It comes on during boot up and allows you to "go back" to some prior point in time on your computer. Although you lose data and emails by going back a day you also lose any virus that infected during this time. I have only used it once for virus removal and it worked. I have also used it when suspicious.
