Mitch McGray averaged 7.8 points and 6.6 rebounds in 47 games during his college career.

Mitch McGary is leaving Michigan's basketball program to enter the NBA Draft.

McGary, who missed much of last season because of a back injury, admitted that he had tested positive for marijuana last month during the NCAA tournament.

He was facing a possible one-year suspension from the NCAA.

"Being a part of a program that values integrity, it is important to let everyone know of a poor decision I recently made," McGary said in a statement released Friday morning by the university. "I tested positive for marijuana during the NCAA Tournament. We were notified of that result after the Final Four. I regret thoroughly disappointing my family, coaches and administration. Despite all of this they have been understanding and helpful over the last couple of weeks.

"I take full responsibility for this poor choice and want to apologize to everyone, especially those I have grown close to during my fabulous two years at the University of Michigan.

"I love the University of Michigan and all it has allowed me to do. I have had my ups and downs, especially with my injury this season. I want to thank all the fans for embracing me. This has been the best two years of my life and I have some unbelievable memories. I know that I will be a Wolverine forever."

McGary's performance during the 2013 NCAA tournament helped the Wolverines reach the Final Four before losing to Louisville in the championship game.

The 6-foot-10 forward/center averaged 7.8 points and 6.6 rebounds in 47 games during his college career.

"Mitch has had a tremendous impact on our program from the moment he committed to us," coach John Beilein said. "He has injected an enthusiasm that cannot be matched. This is why he is loved by the coaching staff, his teammates and Wolverine fans.

"The progress he has made on and off the court has been outstanding. His willingness to face a personal issue head on and his positive work ethic during his recent injury have helped him to grow in many ways. We know that he will put all of his energy and effort toward achieving his goals."

McGary, 22, joins teammates Nik Stauskas and Glenn Robinson III in declaring early for this year's draft, which is June 26. McGary is generally projected as a possible late first-round pick at this point.

I think that's a requirement now for the NBA isn't it?
Aren't you required to test positive for a controlled substance now?

Does anyone think any of the top NBA players smoke right before games? People say weed slows reaction time, etc...I had a friend years ago who could only play basketball while stoned, he was much better under the influence believe it or not...

If a top NBA player smokes before a game and it "wears off", do you think any of them burn one down at halftime?

What is the NCAA's stance if one is a student athlete at a school in Colorado or Washington?

Yes to the first part. Without a doubt. Just look at Lamar Odom have you ever seen that guy not high? Iverson used to show up to games reeking like a blunt.

Why aren't these guys just using fake piss? You know if you're going to test positive.
