When Tiger Woods' career is said & done, he will no doubt be one of if not the most famous athletes ever. The one who most likely holds that honor right now is Michael Jordan.

Which one will end up as the most popular professional athlete ever?

lots of people outside of Chicago who have no idea WTF Jordan is. And what Jordan is was a guy who could not hit over .200 in the lowest of low minors. He is also a guy who has hit a million range balls and had world class instruction and cant break 80 on a golf course.

Tiger is 10X the athlete Jordan is. Tiger was won his titles on merit and were not ref aided.

Ask some 16 year old kids on a driving range here in SoCal. They have no idea who Jordan is.

A kid playing golf in Socal would think Jordan was a backstreet boy. Ask a anyone who would date a female and they will know who Jordan. Those Scal lil punk have been wearing his shoes for 10 ears they know who he is. To answer the question I would say Tiger Woods I see the NBA going defunk in the next 10 years. Out of sight out of mind.

Tiger Woods and it isn't even worth comparing.

Jordan may be the best NBA player ever (May....there is room for discussion)

Tiger will be the best golfer ever (and he may already be in some opinions)

I think basketball has been around for like 100 years and golf has been around for 500 years....sounds much harder to be the best ever at the 500 year sport.

Not to mention Tiger Woods has changed the game lightyears more than Jordan did for the NBA. Jordan was awesome, but he was no Tiger Woods.

Tough call. Who's more famous today? Wilt Chamberlin or Arnold Palmer? Both were at their peak about the same era.

My guess is that in 25 or 50+ years, Jordan will probably be more famous than Woods. There's more nostalgia for football and basketball than there is for golf.

What does this have to do with anything. I'm not saying jordan is correct answer but his minor league hitting and his golf swing have to do with anything.

Tiger can't compete in baseball either and he can't shoot 3 pointers with world class instructors.

Sounds as good as yours.

By the time Tiger Woods career is over he will be known around the world as one of the greatest athletes of all time. With the continuing increase in talent in the NBA, such as Kobe Bryant and Lebron James, the future players will get even better and one day Jordan may not be considered the best basketball player of all time. Golf is played around the world while basketball is not. My vote is for Tiger Woods to be more famous then Michael Jordan.

basketball is played all around the world. thats why the nba is the most diverse league. they have so many people from so many different countries because the game is played all around the world.

from australia to iceland to sweden to spain, to brazil. its played in every country.

1st off once again Rail shades the arguement HIS way which is absurd...go to a NYC innercity basketball court and ask those kids who Jordan is....to say go to a DRIVING RANGE in So Cal is just laughable...

lastly Snookslayer makes a great point...basketball is a more mainstream sport (that nostalgia he mentioned) than golf is....ALSO and probably most importantly....everyone here knows for a FACT when Woods isnt in the tourney or is hurt the ratings fall off a cliff....basketball will always have a GREAT player (kobe/bird/magic) for every decade to keep the interest in the sport high.....woods is a once in a LIFETIME golfer...what happens when he retires and say that era is full of Mickelson/Els etc (just a couple guys who have won 2or3 majors)....thats hardly enough IMO to keep level of interest in the sport at a fevered pitch like we see right now with TW when he playing on the final round of a major....

im not gonna say who will end up more famous just throwing my 2cents out there.....

Jordan for me. Obviously it's everyone's opinions, but stating that Tiger's the best at his sport and Jordan is CONSIDERED or arguably the best at his sport is stupid not to mention that bball being around for 100 yrs and golf being around for 500 yrs or so has absolutely nothing to do with who ends up being the more famous athlete.

There's so much stuff you have to consider when trying to determine who'll end up being the more famous athlete and those two points you brought up are irrelevant. I'll just ramble off some stuff, but first can golfers even be considered athletes? Should golf even be considered a "sport"? (i think there was another thread about this and nascar and whatnot) Secondly, if golf is a "sport" then which of the 2 sports is more popular throughout the world currently and in your opinion, in the future? Social and economic aspects of the 2 sports tells me that basketball, not golf, is the more popular sport throughout the world currently and will be in the future.

Third, to touch up on your point that while Tiger certainly is the best golfer ever Jordan can be considered to be the best at his sport and it's not for certain. IMO to try and determine who the best bball player ever was is a stupid and futile attempt b/c there's 5 different positions to consider. You can break down who the best player ever was in each of the 5 positions, but to single out 1 best player ever is ridiculous. Secondly, golf is an individual sport. It's all about you and you have no one else to rely upon other than yourself while bball is a team sport. Everyone including myself probably thinks Tiger has and can beat the shit out of any single individual on earth 1-on-1 at golf, but that's hard to say for any single bball player b/c not only have we not seen any 1-on-1 matchups b/w the greatest bball players, it's just not possible to coordinate such an event.

Jordan.

He built Nike into the mega-brand it is today. And he is obviously still big with Gatorade and Haynes. Tiger woods might be the best golfer ever, but Jordan is definitely more famous and influential.
