Houston +9 2 units
Trying to keep ahead of the early ratings, this Houston squad looks undervalued. Like yesterday, this program is making strides to become a power again. They got a good ol boy coach, who wields a lot of clout in Texas, Tom Penders. You could almost say he is the basketball coach, in Texas. But after bringing prosperity back to the lone star state Tom got burned out. 30 years of coaching will do that. So he was a talking head and a radio guy for 3 years. He got the itch, and looked at lot of openings, he chose this one. That is a very good thing. Coach Penders commands a lot of respect in Texas, especially from the zebras. He also is extremely experienced with building programs up. He brought in 5 juco's. All atheletic, jumpers with speed, and 3 are 6'8" 240 bangers. So they now have decent depth. He also inherited a very good backcourt. They have shown immediate signs of improvement, early, and played respectable in tourney play. Rice, on the other hand, is the Nevada hopeful this year. However so far, not even close. Last outing just blasted badly. La Lafeyette just layed it to them, especially exposing the backcourt, our strength. A telling stat: they had 31 turnovers, to only getting 15. They had 7 steals compared to 17 stolen. These numbers led to 22 less shots taken. And they had the ft advantage by 9, so no home cooking excuses. They have one inside stud, Mike Harris. A 6'6" 240 stud. Had 17 boards in loss, closest teammate, 5. Behind them, 2. Talk about a one man show. Coach Penders has the jucos to bang him the entire game. It appears to me Rice is the preappproved Cinderella team, or is supposed to be. Houston is the used to be great. Line is off here and I expect a very close game with a pretty nice backcourt advantage. Another nailbiter where plus points should work. 2 units.
