NEW YORK (AP) — Former New York State Assembly Speaker Sheldon Silver was indicted Thursday on three charges after his arrest last month in a federal bribery case.

The indictment was returned in Manhattan federal court, where he appeared last month briefly when he was freed on bail just a day after sharing the stage with Gov. Andrew Cuomo during his State of the State address. The charges are honest services mail fraud, honest services wire fraud and extortion under the color of his official duties.

"Our client is not guilty. We can now begin to fight for his total vindication. We intend to do that fighting where it should be done — in court," Silver's lawyers, Joel Cohen and Steve Molo, said in a statement. Silver has said he is confident he will be vindicated.

Silver's arrest came after he had led the Assembly for over 20 years, becoming one of the most powerful and savvy figures in New York state politics.

But prosecutors said there was a dark side to his reputation as a potent backroom operator who played a major role in state budgets and laws, controlling which lawmakers sat on which committees and what bills got a vote.

The government said he had collected nearly $4 million in bribes and kickbacks since 2002 and disguised the proceeds as legitimate income.

The Democrat has since resigned as speaker but has said he intends to keep his Assembly seat.

Silver's arrest rocked the state Capitol, even though state lawmakers' arrests have become ruefully common. Some 28 New York legislators have stepped down because of criminal or ethical issues in the past 15 years. Four others remain in office while they fight charges, including Silver.

A day after announcing Silver's January arrest, U.S. Attorney Preet Bharara told a breakfast meeting at a law school that it sometimes seems as if Albany had become a "cauldron of corruption."

He was particularly critical of what he called a "three-men-in-a-room" system of government that put too much control in the hands of the state's governor, Assembly speaker and Senate president.

Notice how they finally call out his political affiliation in a small paragraph, near the bottom?

Lets see how the AP calls out the political affiliation of Republicans when they do something wrong:
_______________________________________________________________________

NORTH CAROLINA (AP) — A North Carolina Republican got more than he bargained for when he sat down with The Daily Show's Aasif Mandvi.

Don Yelton, a Republican precinct chairman in North Carolina, resigned Thursday after making racially charged remarks on the Comedy Central show while defending his state's voter ID law.

(Wow, right there in the opening paragraph and headline)

GOP Law Maker Charged With Sexual Assault

MADISON, Wis. (AP) — Prosecutors charged former Wisconsin Assembly Majority Leader Bill Kramer on Friday with sexually assaulting a political aide three ...

(They didn't even wait for the first paragraph, they put it right in the headline)

Florida Republican Rep. Radel charged with cocaine possession in DC

WASHINGTON D.C. (AP) — Republican Florida Rep. Trey Radel has been charged with misdemeanor cocaine possession in D.C., court records reveal.

(Had to throw it in the headline and opening paragraph)

Most stories of democrats doing wrong and they bury the party affiliation. And yes democrats are also racist, crackheads, sexual deviants as well.

Just showing the hypocrisy in the media when it comes to giving stories and how they do it for one party over another.

You're overly paranoid, IMO. It goes to Fame. Sheldon Silver was a big deal, the Boss Tweed of NYS for decades. A total piece of slime, IMO. These other guys were?????.
If there's a story about Obama, or Christie, or Hillary, or someone really nationally known, you're not generally gonna see party affiliation in the Headline.
But like anything else, if you're determined to see something, and look for something, you'll likely find it.

I never heard of him, that's why I was trying to see what party he belonged to lol. When it didn't mention it in the first couple paragraphs, I knew what party he belong to.

What party was this guy?? Party not even mentioned in the story. If I was overly paranoid, and looking for something, I'd think they might be covering something up. But since I'm rational, and don't go out of my way to look for such nonsense, I would not even think of it. :think2:

Former Virginia Gov. Bob McDonnell Gets 2 Years In Prison:

Updated at 4:02 p.m. ET
Former Virginia Gov. Bob McDonnell was sentenced today to two years in prison for public corruption.
U.S. District Judge James R. Spencer said McDonnell must report to prison on Feb. 9. Spencer said he was moved by the support for the former governor, but "a price must be paid. Unlike Pontius Pilate, I can't wash my hands of it all. A meaningful sentence must be imposed."
Earlier, McDonnell addressed the court, asking that Spencer show him and his wife, Maureen, mercy.
"I stand before you a heartbroken and humbled man," he said.
The sentence could be seen as a victory for McDonnell's attorneys. Prosecutors had sought a range of at least 10 years and one month to as long as 12 years and seven months in prison for the acceptance of bribes totaling $177,000 while McDonnell was governor. Spencer had earlier lowered the recommended sentence to 6 1/2 to 8 years.
McDonnell's attorneys had asked for community service rather than prison time. The former governor said he will appeal today's sentence.
Outside the courtroom, McDonnell said he was "deeply, deeply sorry" for some of his actions, but insisted that he "never, ever betrayed my sacred oath of office."
Virginia's former governor and his wife, Maureen, were convicted in September of multiple counts of corruption stemming from a relationship with Jonnie Williams, the CEO of Star Scientific. The couple accepted money, expensive gifts and vacations from Williams in exchange for government favors as Williams sought to market his company's dietary supplements. The Washington Post listed several of the gifts, which included a Rolex watch, a shopping trip in New York City, wedding catering for the McDonnells' daughter Cailin and several golf outings for the couple's sons on a private jet.
Defense attorneys had argued for a sentence of 6,000 hours of community service based on, among other things, McDonnell's service as governor and what they argued was his acceptance of responsibility for the offenses. The prosecution counters that McDonnell's case should serve as an example of political corruption and its consequences.
The Richmond Times-Dispatch reported that the defense submitted a 29-page memo asking that the former governor be allowed to remain free pending an appeal.
Craig Carper with Richmond's WCVE radio told NPR's Newscast that more than 400 letters were written by McDonnell's family members, friends and supporters, as well as elected officials, asking Spencer for leniency.
Maureen McDonnell will be sentenced separately on Feb. 20.
